A question for site owner...
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:42:07 pm »
I just wanted to ask if you are going to be offering seals/window trim anytime soon. I am looking to replace all of my driver and passenger side door-window seals. Mine are so old and wore out that air almost flows freely though them. They are peeling away from that little triangular window by about a half inch on the outside, and are hard as a rock. I also need new ones for the window that rolls up and down. I have looked around and all i have found is places that are overpriced, or places that I don't think I would trust. So i figured i would ask.

As a side question, anyone happen to know how hard all those seals are to replace? Is it something you can do at home or would i be better off taking it to my local auto glass shop?

Thanks,  Justin

Justin,
I am still trying to find a supplier.  I haven't had much luck yet, but the company that make the one piece windows has given me a contact with their supplier.  It won't be anytime soon though.

You should be able to do all of this by yourself.  BTW, you can still get alot of these parts from GM.  I replace alot of seals on my Crew Cab last year from GM parts.

Well i got em replaced and dang, what a difference. My truck no longer whistles at me and i don't have any annoying wind noise in the cab anymore.

Well since you do not sell these parts, it should be safe to ask where is a good place to buy them, correct? Provided certain hated places are not mentioned that is...

Anyway, when installing my new seals it came to my attention that not only did i need new belt strip and vent window seals, but i also needed new top window seals. These are the seals that are in the door itself, but are not the belt strip seals that are at the bottom, and are not the vent window seals. They go all the way up to the top of the door. Again, these are not on the cab itself, they are in the door and when you roll up the window, the glass kind of seats into them up there. Anyway, i need new ones. Anyone know where a cheap place to get them might be?

Just to report back in case anyone else may be considering this project... I found out that GM as well as JCWhitney get their replacement seals from a company called Precision. You can't even view precisions website (or at least browse their catalogue) unless you are one of their distributors. And imo... well they dont live up to their name by being very precise. At least not with these particular seals. They were missing a couple of holes that really needed to be there imo. And you will need to be using a heat gun for sure once you get them installed. To get them to be look right, and seal right, i mean. Maybe thats all part of it, i admit i am a noob seal installer lol. But i did expect it to be much less work to actually get them to fit correctly. It was a lot of work to get them installed and i did expect that, but to get them up to satisfactory, you will be spending a lot of time even after you have them installed.

Therefore if it were me, or if i was to do the job again, i would look for a different maker than precision. Then again they may be the only ones out there.

We should be adding Precision Replacment Parts and Fairchild Industires weatherstripping to the catalog soon.
They are availible now, but not listed.

I'll have to look and see where the seal kit I got came from but it had the entire set for the cab and was very nice.

I would be interested in that info.  My 86 needs a complete set.

Yep, me too. I need to replace the vent windows as well. Might as well do them at the same time.

Well here is what i am talking about with the precision manufacturer. Look at the bottom left hand of the seal. See how it just kind of rolls inward? My old seals (being the factory installed of course) just sort of sat flush up against it. Almost like they were part of the metal or glass. These roll inward, and are trying to stuff themselves into the crack. It might not be apparent from this picture but it is that way all the way around the seal. Same for the inside. It wasn't till after about 2 hours of working and rubbing them (while using a heat gun) that i got them to look close to stock.

That's how they are skunk. My kit I checked and is from precision also. They all fit like the gm ones did if not a little better. The vent windows are a pita no matter what you do. It's a poor design. One thing I learned to do when refurbing the vent windows is to strip them and make them rigid by tack welding. The rivets alone allow too much flex and they will leak. Also don't overtighten the spring when you reassemble.
