ground/nature problems
« on: June 15, 2013, 01:15:04 am »
my 79 has been sitting for a little bit due to gas/money problems but last time i dove it i has rear light problems nothing was working in the rear (turn, running, brake and the license plate light) so today with the nice weather i decided i would work on her get her back on the road. so first things first drove it up my buddy's drive way to his shop. parked it and got out the volt tester. turned on the running lights and wanted to make sure it wasn't a bad connection to the headlight switch. reached under the dash and felt something shock me i jumped and let out a little scream with some laughter. then it hit me nothing should of shocked me with the 12v system since i wasn't sweating, so i thought maybe a wire/metal stabbed me in the finger. so i looked under my dash to hear a buzzing sound. then i took off screaming and laughing more. a couple seconds later i creeped back to the truck and slowly looked under the dash again to see what it was. it was a huge (fishing story but he was 3" long)  paper wasp sitting next to the dimmer switch on the floor so i took off again. this time he followed and left the truck and sat on my buddy's fork lift. so he proceeded to smack it with his hat as he creeped up on it he even said "it was a huge wasp". so he smacked it and it just flew off like nothing ever happened. so proceeded to check for more found the nest but lucky no more wasp. knocked the next down and crushed it. so i went to the trailer wire harness and check for power its getting power with no problems and the ground was good there. so i went to the drivers side tail light and took the cover off and all this rust fell down onto the housing knew it wasn't good. took the housing off just to have problems removing 3 out of 4 bolts due to a bad rust problem. apparently with the snow storms we had a couple years ago (i rinsed the truck off) but didn't think about salt getting that high into the body the salt killed the truck. it was bad enough to make the ground wire brake off right at the eye where it bolts to the body right behind the tail light housing. fixed that and tail light work like a charm. so i still felt like i could do more went back to the cab and proceeded to remove the cluster and fix a ground pr connection problem there. just to see another wasp nest this time its yellow jackets  and there's three of them looking a little ticked off. not having any wasp killer i tool some black satin spray paint and gave them a nice coating this worked like a charm they couldn't fly they just fell off the next and died with in seconds. fixed my other ground problem and trucks electronics working fine. then i decided to fix my antenna problem have 5' whip antennas that get terrible reception. then i noticed i didn't have an Isolator between the antenna and mount. found one put it in and stereo gets stations from 45 miles away. normally cant get this station unless you 30 miles or closer. then i decided to put some old 40" mud tires (ground hawgs) they are too dry rotted for the road but great in the mud. they where in the tree line. so i rolled them a couple feet down they where covered in leaves so i looking fo more wasp. then i noticed this big spider sitting in one of the grooves that i was about to touch. it was a black widow. normally i don't like to kill things that wont bother me but its a black widow we take some pictures and kill it then i decided with my days experience to call it a night and went home and went to bed
