hey guys, i have an 87 GMC 1500 2wd with a 350 TBI and a 700R. Has anyone swapped the 700r out for like a 5 speed stick? im 17 and would love the truck to be a stick. just wondering if its worth it

I wouldn't do it unless you're putting in a 6 speed. It can be done though

You will need to source everything from a manual equipped truck. OR I think Keilser has setups now that are hydrualic and pretty much complete.
-
how much do those run for? and a 6 speed would be better than a 5?
-
From Keisler? about $3000-$4000.

anyplace that sells a kit with a transmission? or is there any good kinda of trannys that would fit that i could get from a junk yard? and who prefers the 5 speed over the 6?

I've already decided that if I have the money, when my my 700r4 finally bites the dust, I'm converting to a Tremec TKO 5-speed (the one w/3.27 1st). I would like the T56's better if they had four underdriven gears, one direct, and one overdrive. Who needs double overdrive? You could get a Richmond six, but that's big bucks. And close ratios boxes aren't approprate for trucks with torquey engines IMO. The TKO has a GVWR of 5500 lbs (based on last generation rating) vs. max 4000 lbs for the T56 (depends on version). On top of that the TKOs offer more shifter mounting options.

Keilser that I listed above sells the whole kit with the trans.... You could get a T56 from an F-body, but I would avoid the factory GM 5 speeds.. They won't hold up to abuse

I'd suggest going with the Peugeot BA-10 5-speed, it is very reliable ::) and has a nice rally-esque gear whine :P, which is why i have it in my Jeep :D....haha just messin, it wouldn't probly fit nor would it stand up to the abuse, I sometimes wonder why I still have it....

is said on that website that captkoas gave me that it was for a 55-57 chevy truck. idk if i just miss read it or not but.

In my '88 dually, my dad had the TH400 swapped out for a 5-speed a few years ago.
