Title: AC Delco fan clutch
Post by: Fairlane514 on May 04, 2012, 02:27:00 PM
I need to replace my fan clutch on my 84 with a goodwrench 350. My old clutch has no identifying numbers on it.

Can anyone advise on the correct part number. I am hoping to find a medium duty clutch, heavy duty  runs all the time and light duty isn't enough.
I also would like to stick with AC Delco
Thanks!

Check your local Chevy dealer, and go the parts counter and ask if they have any old books that cover your year truck, that is going to be your best bet.  If they do not I have a ex Chevy dealership that kept all the books when they closed.
Pm me and I can ask the guy I know there.

I ended up getting the AC Delco 15-4949.  Several sources quoted this P/N.  I also bought a new radiator from Raditors4less, it fit very nice with only a little modification to the rubber isolators.

That is the heavy duty with AC fan clutch for 3.73:1 and higher final drive ratios

I do have A/C and probably 3.08 gears with a 700R4.  I was thinking 3.73 would be a nice gear to install.  I also live in Houston, gets pretty hot and humid.

Why do they need different clutches for different rear axle ratios?

Engine RPM - different pitch like a torque converter
