THM 700R4 VS THM 2004R
« on: July 10, 2004, 01:19:00 PM »
I do have a question. Does anyone know anything about the strength/reliability/interchaingability of a 2004R transmission compared to a 700R4? What problems has anyone encountered/heard about the 2004R? Is it a good swap in place of a weak 700R4?

Respectfully,
Dave

Honestly in a crewcab that will be doing alot of pulling/towing/hauling, you really should stick with a 700R4.  The 200R4 has a closer spread of the shift points and would be better suited to something you wanted to race.

Thank you for the reply Chris. I know that this is a truck site however, it was a consideration for the 89 Camaro that I'm driving. I did some research and have decided that I'm going to keep the 700R4 in the Camaro. The 2004R will require some modification under the Camaro to include a custom driveshaft. The 2004R won't fit the bill. There is a new consideration. I may try putting a 2004R in place of a short tail 350 transmission in my 68 Stepside Pickup. The difference in total length is only 1/8 inch! I will have to relocate the transmission crossmember. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again for the reply.

Dave

I ran a 200r4 in my 85 Monte Carlo SS. I installed a B&M trans pack in it. Ran great. Never missed a shift. Was raced at the local drag strip on week ends and pulled commuter duty during the week. I beat on that trans for years before selling the car. Just do not go too big with what is in front of it. I was running a modified 305 HO with a 150 shot of Nitrous. That would put the Hp range above 300hp. The stock factory specs were 160hp. Engine mods pushed it near 200hp then the 150 shot on top of that. If you are looking at over 400hp get the 700r4.
