Upgrade questions for my 305
« on: May 26, 2004, 11:46:00 PM »
I was just curious how big of a difference I would see in performance from my 305 if I put in a hotter coil or rebuilt my HEI with a kit and upgraded the sparkplugs?

I've often wondered if any of the lost throttle response I've suffered is caused by lack of proper spark.  I'm certain the coil is the original; I know the distributor is.  I have no other mods, and I run my truck on Chevron 93 octane.

Also I've been thinking of upgrading the intake and carb.  My truck has got all of the emissions @#%$ on it with the 4bbl Rochester, and I was curious if the Edelbrock Performer will help throttle response with the stock Q-jet.  If not, what's a good carb?

Thanks for your help.

Upgrade you HEI to an Accel piece that's a stock replacement, run the 8mm yellow Accel plug wires and get a set of rapid fire plugs and you WILL feel a BIG difference in throttle response and a nicer idle. I did the above mentioned to a buddy of mines 305 in his '74 C10, and he had a 2bbl rochester. The idle note coming out the exhaust was incredible, it actually sounded meaner than most stock camaros.

Stomp my flag and I will stomp your @$$!

You may lose throttle response with the Performer, since its runners are larger than yours.  Even a stock 350 loses power on the dyno until ~3000rpm with a Performer swap.

Build a 377 stroker.  Great for trucks.
