700r4 issues?
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:42:07 PM »
Question on a issue with the tranny..I think. Have the 700r4 on an 89 Suburban 1500 w/ 350. 135k original miles. Couple days ago as I slowed down it sounded like two gears grabbed causing a loud noice and jerk feeling through the rig. At the next light I put it in neutral and slowed down and it did the same thing. I could hear what sounded like the wheel of fortune spinning and which slows down as Suburban slows. Then when the knocking or flapping sound stops the sound of gears grabbing starts - two times usually. No noticeable changes in shifting pattern. No issues from drive to reverse or neutral to any gear. Fluid is clean and full. Any ideas? First 700r4 owne.

Are you sure the engine isn't starting to knock?

Its not an knock coming from the engine. Its more of a chain or gear sound spinning which the speed or tone of the spinning is relative to vehicle speed. As I slow and just prior to stopping get the loud thud which sounds like gears grabbing. I was wondering if maybe I could have a bad ujoint or driveshaft lube problem and not a tranny problem.   Just need some free time to investigate more.

An update-
I pulled the cap for the transfer case NP241 and it was way low. As you all know the NP241 is chain driven (ATF) so this might make since -hearing what sounds like a chain spinning or dragging. It was almost a quart low. I dont drive the much and have not conculded if this has resolved my problem. I am taking it for a drive tomorrow and see if this fixed things.
