Title: Dually rear end swap
Post by: reichardt55 on January 01, 2012, 12:33:06 PM
Anybody have any info on putting a dually rear end out of a 86 1 ton chevy into a 3/4 ton chevy. I have both rear ends and they are both 14 bolt Corp GM with 10 1/2 ring gears.  Do I have to change the whole thing or can I just change the axle shafts and outsides, drums etc.
Bob

If memory serves me right, there is a difference in the internals sizes of the axle's between the 3/4/and 1 ton axles, even though they are both 14 bolt axles.  ( I believe the bearings and races are bigger in the 1 ton ), so I believe you have to swap out the whole axle.
Give it some time, someone else will either correct me or confirm my memory.
Also I see this is your second post, Welcome to the site.

if im right the dually axles would ahve bigger drums on them which in turn would then need the actual axle house from a dually for the extra width to hold the drums and axles on idk if yours are ff axles or not but if they are you would definatly need the dually axle or it wont bolt back together

The dually rear axle is wider and the drums will not interchange even though they are both full float with a 10.5 ring gear.

Is it a dually, or a cab, and chassis rear end?
As far as I know dually's had Dana 70s in them. They are the same width as a 3/4 ton pick up rear end. I have run across two over the years that had 14 bolts in them, but I am thinking they were swapped in from a 3/4 ton pick up. Cab, and chassis had 14 bolts but the housing is narrower than a pick up rear axle.

You might want to double check.I've heard the spring spacing on one tons and three quarter tons is different by about 1 1/2 to 2".
