Specialty in cab repair out there?
« on: November 02, 2023, 01:29:33 PM »
Was wondering if there was a shop in the NC region that specialized in cutting/welding squarebody cabs?

This is nothing special about these trucks that would require a specialty shop for cutting/welding repairs.

I'm not very savvy with sheetmetal work and I figured there was someone out there that has gotten really good at repairing all the usual problem areas

It would be best to buy a welder and needed equipment and supplies and start doing it yourself. You will learn, save money, and it will be rewarding. I had zero welding experience when I started my rebuild.

I love good reasons to buy more tools :)
Assuming the customary pans, rockers, etc- how much time should an amateur welder budget for this endeavor?

as in time to complete?  hard to put a time on that, as it depends on the amount of work.
This is the link in our store for a floor repair kit on the floors and rockers getting fixed. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=5661.0

As far as tools, Millermatic has a MIG welder that is suitable for thin metal welding. My son bought one, I used it on a project and it was incredible how it sensed the thinnest of what I was working with and adjusted the voltage accordingly. Unlike ordinary MIG's, where you have to do a spot then let it cool.

This was 10 years ago, I think he paid 300+ for it.
