Title: $2 million impound
Post by: nucknoel89 on September 01, 2011, 10:26:40 PM
Uggh, if it was up to me these kids' licenses would be yanked so fast it would make their heads spin.   >:(

Thirteen young people were lucky to only receive tickets and have their high-end cars impounded after allegedly racing down a busy highway during rush hour.

Police received a number of calls Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. about expensive vehicles racing on Highway 99.

Witnesses said the cars were working together — two would drive side-by-side and slow down traffic so others could race ahead at speeds of up to 200 km/h.

When the drivers exited the freeway at King George, Surrey RCMP officers stopped six of the drivers near 152nd Street. They were not racing at the time and were pulled over without incident. The other seven were stopped shortly after by White Rock RCMP.

“They were going for a meal and this was a way for them to have some fun,” RCMP Supt. Norm Gaumont said Thursday.

All of the drivers — 12 young men and one young woman — were under the age of 21, and two were under the age of 18. Six were new drivers, six had full licences and one had no valid Canadian driver’s licence. Gaumont said the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles has been notified so the new drivers’ licences can be reviewed.

Some had previous driving infractions, including street racing.

They were all given $196 tickets for driving without reasonable consideration and will lose six points on their licences. Only one person was the registered owner of his vehicle.

“I know there’s a lot of disappointment wondering why we only charged them with an offence of $196,” Gaumont said. “The fact of the matter is we have to look at all the evidence we have and what we’re able to prove.”

Although the case is still active Gaumont said police are currently relying on third-party evidence, which is not enough to charge the suspects with dangerous driving or seize their cars permanently.

“Certainly if I could I would in this instance, but unfortunately the evidence isn’t there right now,” Gaumont said. “We’re still waiting and hope that we’ll have other witnesses that’ll call in and give us the evidence that we require.”

For seven days the cars — which include three Lamborghini Gallardos, three Nissan R Series cars and two Maserati Turismos and have a combined value of more than $2 million — will sit in impound lots.

Cory Rushinko of Bayview Auto Towing, where seven of the cars are being stored, said the owners will have to pay $300 to $350 each to bail their cars out.

“It’s the rarest of the rare,” Rushinko said of having such expensive cars in his lot.

Gaumont said it was fortunate that no one lost control of their vehicle.

“Young males are not the most safety conscious sometimes, and then you put them in the high-powered vehicles with very little experience with driving these vehicles and it is a real recipe for disaster.”

Gaumont said B.C. has come a long way and there are far fewer instances of street racing than there were a few years ago.

He also believes the laws — which include the prospect of seizure and sale under the Civil Forfeiture Act — are tough enough to deter drivers from acting dangerously.

“I think that would be a big deterrent, if they lost some of these vehicles that are a quarter-million dollars,” Gaumont said. “In this case they may have gotten lucky with what they have. Next time they may not.”

So 12 cars and only 1 car belong to the actual driver.  Somebody's mommy's and daddy's are going to be mad.

SO.....if there were more evidence/proof, the fine would be higher? And I thought the US' justice system was screwed up.

Amazing. The police had enough evidence to write them all tickets and impound their cars, but not enough to seriously prosecute them. If they had been driving Mustangs, they'd be rotting in jail right now. Rich man's justice is a wonderful thing.

The law is the law.  There is no mercy with the law unless you are rich and famous like those rich kids.
