Title: Insuring our trucks
Post by: berserk on January 06, 2023, 02:40:12 AM
I have a K10 and recently dumped a LOT of money and time(12,000+) into the truck. Several months ago I inquired about insuring the truck beyond liability and only met dead ends. My insurance Progressive had NO policy for modified classic vehicles that aren't completely restored. I called several classic car insurance companies (Grundy, hagerty, etc) and was told the truck needed to be a garage queen/ show truck in other words not driven. I want to WORK my truck, tow, off-road, cruise etc. drive 5000 miles a month if I want. Also my truck is Rusty with bad paint ALL the money is in mechanical. Such as one ton axles, lockers, suspension and so on.

When I told these companies this they ALL said they had no policy for classics that are actually driven daily/not totally restored with documentation.

So here is the question, I want to USE the truck. To tow trailers, off road, daily drive, road trip. HOW in the heck are you guys who have 20,000+ in your trucks that actually use them get insurance that covers the value? And through what company?

Thanks so much for any help

The "daily drive" thing killed my suggestion....I use Safeco, with a stated value insurance, but it's a limited mileage deal.

I've been searching for years and years.  None I've found will Insure anything over 15 or so years old for daily driving.  That means my 78 C20 and my 97 Z28 are gonna be gone for real if anything happens to them.  Most insurance you can never drive it to work.  you can never drive it to stores.  Well I only go to work.  If anything happens to my 78, I'm SOL.  After finding this out, The 78 and 97 will be the last classic cars I put $20k+ into.  I'd still buy decent drivers if under $10k or so and not worry about it.  ya know a nice survivor.  But no more no expense ($20-$30k for me) spared cars.

They'll insure to to drive...  Everything but the value of your vehicle.

I have come to the same conclusion, if I can't have some kind of full coverage ins. and actually use the truck I can't put anymore money into it. Thanks

Yeah, I've been searching for somehting for a year and a half.

We built this to be my daugter's first vehicle, have $25k in it and who knows how many hours.  We've done everything but the paint.

She is too young to put on the policy and since it would be driven daily both of these kill getting any type of agreed upon value.

I did get a heads up on a company called American Family.  I haven't had a chance to chekc them out, but one of the guys on another forum uses them and says they're insuring for the value he has in the truck.

When I first got my 77 c-10 back in 2016, I went right to Hagerty and insured it for more than what it was worth. I paid $5k for the truck and insured it for $12k. After restoration, I bumped it up to $20k. I don’t know what to say, maybe I slipped through the cracks? If the roads are clean and dry, I am driving it, year round. Hagerty has been great, I’ll have to check what my policy cost and I’ll post it, but I think it’s less than $300/year.

Did they impose restrictions on the use of your truck and how it is stored? In other words it's only insured to go to a car shows or Cruise. Instead of daily drive / towing.

I ask because I can get it insured from them but I can't actually use it as a truck. They said I couldn't tow boats or trailers, or daily drive. And if I got in a wreck doing those things the insurance wouldn't cover it.

I have gotten a quote from them about 12 months ago. They will ask you how many miles a year you drive your truck and is it kept in a garage. What is the value of your truck? You pay according to what you tell them.

Right now both my Dodge and my 87 GMC are both insured by Liberty Mutual (yes that joker and the emu). I have currently PA state minimum,  I also worked for em to and Ive seen other ppl with Truck like ours with higher levels of insurance.

Same thing as Mike81k10. I started with Hagerty around 2016 and they did ask a few detailed questions like what you stated, like miles driven per year, garage, etc. During a typical New England winter it will sit form Dec - Most of March. Of course, if the roads are dry and free of salt I would drive it every day, regardless.

They did not impose any restrictions like you said. Maybe I fit their profile anyway, I only drive the truck maybe 1000 mi./year and I don’t use it as a “truck”

I wanted to give an update on an insuring my truck. I found a local farmer's insurance agent that works with Hagerty and was able to get insurance on my truck finally.

I think the issue I had is I called hagerty support and the person I spoke to didn't care about me or my business. Going with a local agent they really worked with me, asked the right questions, and act as a middleman between me and hagerty.

In the end I was able to get really good liability, uninsured motorist and cover the truck for 20,000. It turned out to be around $38 a month but for my investment in the truck I'm happy. Just wanted to make sure and update for people who look at this thread later. My advice is if you're having issues calling the insurance agencies directly look for a local agent to work with.

I had the exact same experience with the Hag, they cop an attitude and basically ignore you. Broker fixed it and now I pay them about the same.

My first experience with them was as we both described. But I must say that I've called Hagerty twice since I posted this to get clarifications on my insurance coverage and the two different people I spoke to were great! Very helpful and nice and knowledgeable. But I was also talking to a different department this time so that may have something to do with it.

I thought I would add my 2 cents on Hagerty. I have had them for years on my '69 Chevelle. Thankfully I have never had to make a claim. When my son turned 16, I called Hagerty to inquire if they would even entertain putting him on my policy for his 1987 Corvette! Would they even put a teen on a classic policy? A new driver? A kid with a Corvette? Well, they said they would and it was no hassle.
Fast forward to this recently concluded school year, and it was his first day of his senior year of high school. He drove his Corvette to school. End of the day, leaving the school and he was side-swiped by a young woman, not from the school and she didn't stop. He followed her, got a picture of her vehicle and license plate, got into a brief, verbal altercation with her at a gas station, and she drove off without exchanging insurance information. So, we had to file a claim with Hagerty. They were great! We found a good shop to do the work and fix the car and Hagerty paid the claim. Luckily it was mostly paint and cosmetics and not any structural damage.

Just curious.  Did you file a police report for hit-and-run?  And, how did that turn out?

BD, he did call the cops...they said they were too busy at the moment to come out, but that an officer would come by the house later. They never did. He filed an online police report with a picture of her vehicle and her license plate. They did nothing.

And, so it is across The Nation.  Public servants have degraded lazily into treason.

Is that for daily driver insurance?  I can drive it to work in morning traffic?  I can leave it in a hotel parking lot overnight?  I don;t want collector insurance.  I want to drive my truck just like I do my 2018 impala.  In other words am I limited in any way normal newer cars aren't?  Can I tow a trailer on a 500 mile road trip?

Sadly it's all about the money.
