Dextron/mercon as power steering fluid
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:48:54 PM »
Hi, been away a while... getting back to work on the '77 Chevy.  I was wondering if anyone has tried dextron/mercon in their power steering systems, and what the results were.

I know a lot of Fords (is that swearing here?  :o) use it in their power steering systems, but I am wondering if there is a difference in the seals in our systems.

Thanks!

You mean the atf right? I dunno I've considered doing atf in there before. Good question

Thanks for the response.  I thought it would be ok, but feel better about trying it now.

Usage depends on seals that are used. Go with what is recommended or you might end up with some premature leaks.

Vile's right. I used it on an old 77 I had years ago, and it started leaking around the shaft.

Actually, the 77 used "GM power steering fluid or equivalent" according to my Haynes manual.  Don't have an owners manual in the glove box (imagine that ::)).

My 77 was 4 different colors when I bought it, so I don't know if it had 77 power steering pump or not. ;D

Mine was short, wide that was 4 different colors (mostly brown) with a set of Weld Draglites with 70's on the front and 60's on the back. It was love at first sight!
