79 K10 build
« on: January 01, 2020, 09:18:21 AM »
I've been building this 79 K10 for a buddy of mine. Truck was butchered when I got it, blocks front and rear, hacked exhaust, hacked wiring, barely ran, had wrong bumpers rigged up, you name it. So I've gone through it mechanically, built a dual exhaust system, got it running great, new suspension lift, new driveshafts, brakes and lines, fixed fuel gauge and dual tank setup, pulled about 10 lbs of mouse nest out. He wants me to pull the body and do a full restore so I figured I'd start a thread where I can dump more pictures when I get a chance. These pictures aren't very good but I need to get a new phone today because I dropped it, so I'll take more pics later and update this thread.

Looks strangely familiar... 8)  Nice work!

Did '79 and '80 have the same one-piece bezel for the headlight and signal?

The '80 I'm into has the one piece, However, I found that same year parting out, with the rectangular headlights, buckets, and trim.

I had to make sure my core support had the right anchor point options, Good to go!

When I finally get this one done she will have a face lift in the eye section...,  ;D

It's come a long way. I'll have to find the pics of how it looked when I got it. What a mess!

79 & 80 had the large surround bezel and lower grille molding. 80 also offered the rectangular or round headlights. They also added the body line in the front of the hood for these years.

To say that the cabin smelled like a barnyard is an understatement:

Someone removed the majority of the AC components, so AC is being put back in it as well with mostly new components. The good news is it no longer smells like death inside the cab.

Forgot to update this thread. Next phase is pulling the bed off and stripping down the body. I have another pile of parts here including a new vapor canister which I found an nos mount for. I never understood why people eliminate these. You can relocate and hide them people. Power steering brackets, since the good ole let's put headers on hack job happened to it somewhere along the way, probably about the same time they ripped all of the AC components out because ya know, "it robs horsepower" being there. New cab supports, and body mounts, front fenders, inner fenders, hood, doors, battery tray, body, fuel senders, and the hvac vacuum reservoir since he's "borrowing" the one I took off of another one of my trucks. I've discovered the original color was silver so I am trying to convince him to let me paint it a similar color or shade of grey. I hate that I keep getting pulled off my own projects but we are also bartering and he is paving my new worlds most asphalt driveways. Pics and details to come soon.

My truck was non A/C and I am putting a Vintage Air Gen IV in it. Wish it had been an A/C truck. I still have my original Charcoal Vapor/Vacuum Cannister. However, I removed the smog pump years ago. You have a nice looking truck VZ.

Well once again, I've been too busy to update anything. I've been doing major renovations to my property and in between I've been tearing into this poor butchered beast. I stripped it down to the frame, painted and coated the frame. Fixed the cab, floors, corners and rockers. I fixed the hacked wiring harness and bypassed fusible links.  The back of the cab had more waves than the ocean so now I am at the point where I am ready to finish the cab up. Another day of sanding and I'll be ready to prime the cab. I am hoping to have it ready for paint in about two weeks but time will tell.

Whew!   :D

It's really discouraging to discover the number of mines set adrift in the wake of others.  Hidden bombs waiting to explode!

The truck looks mighty happy framed by that verdant woodland!  Like a rejuvenated pony waiting to break free of its corral.

Nice work!   8)

Yes this truck was massacred and all of the fusible links were replaced with butt connectors connected to more butt connectors.

That's my new corral I built, soon to be paved. Letting the base settle REALLY good since I brought in about 40 triaxles of material  :o
