Recommended Alternator amperes

Chuck Step-a-side:
I have a standard 85 amp alternator for my weekend driver. Should I get a higher amp alternator?  I have a 1984 Chevy Silverado Stepside w/ 350 V8 and 35 Trans. Thanks, Chuck

Is it a stock setup?

Assuming you have a working ammeter, does it show the correct charging level?

Unless you are taxing the alternator with charging dual batteries, extra off road lighting, or have a camper with batteries, 85 is good.
 

I used to have the model number of the AC Delco alternator that put out something like 100+ amps, was going to use it to charge the batteries when I towed a fifth wheel.

But that was another life....

Yes, it's a stock set up. I'll stick with the 85 amps. Thanks for the reply.

85 amp should be fine if you don't have any unusual accessories; however, the 93 amp Delco 12si V-belt version is also a direct replacement for your truck.  The next step up is the CS130, but its a newer design, and a little more complicated upgrade than the 12si.
