Hello from Germany - Frankfurt
« on: May 12, 2020, 04:32:22 PM »
Hi,
I'm new in this Forum, so I try to tell you a bit of me.
First, speaking and writing english is not my profession, if something isn't well explained, I'm sorry, I'll try to become better.
I bought a '78 C10 Short Bed Fleetside 1 1/2 month ago with the 250 i6 motor. The car came directly from USA, o I have some work, to make it ready for the german roads. Other lights, changing some functions (turn lights...) and many things to repair. the saginaw 3 speed was wet from oil, the clutch was nearly not working, and at some places I can have a look through the chassis where i normaly don't want to do...

to my person, I'm 45 years old, life in a smaler town between frankfurt and wiesbaden and earn my mony with an it-job, but i learned power plant electronics technician a few years ago so i know how to use tools. When i'm not working i mostly spend my time in reapairing and building my home, or other things.
The truck is my first US-Car, before i mostly had old BMW, first e21, then e30, most of them with 6 zylinder engines - or i implanted them. 2 or 3 times i worked at a 60's cadillac coupe deville of a friend, but now i'll deep dive into my own american car.

I'm really happy that  the marked for parts of this car is excellent, much better than for my actual BMW e30 320iC.
to deepen my knowledge, i've bought 2 books and luckily i've found the original service manual, but some questions i couldn't answer for me yet. For example the engine, i only know that it's the 250, and the block casting number told me that it's from 75-76. But i nowhere found a translation of the engine serial behind the distributor assembly.
Also, i search for some parts rockouto don't offer, the clutch pedal rod seal for example.

so you see, from time to time i'll have some questions and perhaps i also can answer some of yours.

greetings

Chris

Welcome from Southern California!

Your English is great!

That i6 is a great motor, you will enjoy better mileage than our v8 boat motors!

Sounds like you will have your work prepared for you.

Hallo Chris!

Wie geht's?!

I am from, let us say the Seattle area. Willkommen! I have spent much time in Deutschland. Most of my time was spent in the Paderborn/Lippstadt area, but I have been to Frankfurt and also two times to the IAA Auto Show there, and also all the way down to Ischgl, Austria. I have a 1968 C-10 Stepside with 292 I6. I have made some work to add Clifford Performance parts to the engine, and I have also added a C4 Independent Rear Suspension to this truck. This vehicle is a long term project, so it has been off of the road for some time.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

-Erik

Hi,
thank you all for your nice replies!

@Shifty, of course i'll show some pictures, but the transmission isn't back in car yet, so I can't put the car out of the garage. At the moment it dosn't look nice, the right door (and also a bit the truck bed) has been damaged while shippping to europe, and the hood has the standard kink in the middle. But i've already seen that I can buy a hood brace kit, for a new hood in the future.

@Erik, then you've seen a bit of little germany. Poorly, the IAA auto Show has left to munich.
I hope the germans you met were friendly, some are a bit rude.
I've been in USA one time, in 2010. My wife and me had a trip down the East Cost, from New York, Washington, Charleston, Daytona, Orlando, Miami to Key West. In Miami we married at Key Biscane Beach in the morning.
We really loved it there, and without corona we planned to come back to Miami at wedding day and then have a look direction New Orleans an Houston.
But now we rest at home and hope that next year it will be better to travel.

regards

Chris

Halli Hallo Chris;

everyone I met was great!  I was there for work mostly, but my German work friends and I always made sure to have a weekend while I was there, to make some fun!  While I haven't been back in quite some time, the marvel of modern technology allows us all to keep in regular contact.

Welcome Chris from Alabama. I spent some time in Deutschland during NATO exercises many years ago while a Marine. Been to Kiel and Bremerhaven, probably a few other place that I cannot recall.

Your truck looks to be in pretty good shape and I wish you the best.

Hi,
thank you all!
I'm happy, that here are also some people, who knows germany and mike i hope you also enjoyed your stay there.
@bigben5054, no i don't. in my city , I know 2 other older pickups, both Ford. 1 is a Series 2 the other a Series 5, both short bed. Thats all.
Newer models I see more often most are Dodge Pickups but that are Cars of the last 10 Years, i think.
A Friend hat a 11th generation Suburban for some years, till another car crashed into his back. Was also a great car!

If people in germany buy old US-Cars, most of them want muscle cars, cabrios or big coupés, but in total, that are perhaps 5% of old cars.
Most have fear, that they need to much gas. For example, 1 gallon is 3.8liter, and we pay (the gas was never as cheap as this time, normally its 30-40 cent more) 1.15€ for a liter, this is 1,26$. As result we pay 4,79$ per gallon.

Thats why most people buy more european cars, because they think that they need much less gas.
For me, I don't care, because I consider the car as a hobby and a hobby is allways ab bit expensive. And also it's not my daily driver, so with my perhaps 2000 miles per year i don't really think about if the car needs 21mpg (my BMW cabrio) or 14-17mpg (that's what i've found about my truck).

regards

Chris

One of my friends from Hella in Lippstadt has come to visit several times. Always when he comes I make a point to pick him up in one of my cars. When he first visited, I picked him up in my 1969 Chevelle. When I tell him it has 5.7 liters, his eyes became big and he could not believe it! We had a good laugh.

The last time he came to visit I picked him up in my 1991 V3500 Crew Cab. When I told him it had 7.4 liters I think his head exploded! ;D

Okay, big engines are more normal for me, i think. Some of my friends have US-cars all of them v8 machines and i love the sound they make  :)
The time will come that i also implement a bigger engine, but first i repair the hole car, perhaps a new paint and then....
