hard brake pedal
« on: September 18, 2006, 09:46:00 PM »
i just bought this truck from a guy that left it in a field for 2 years. whe i got it the front brake res was tatally empty. and when you started the truck and pushed the brake pedal you could hear air leaking like a bad booster. So i went to the junkyard and got another booster and now the pedal is hard as @#%$ to push and the brakes dont stop well.and the leaking noise is much louder. i am lost.

I would take each wheel cylinder and caliper apart.  Two years is a  long time to sit.  Get some rebuild kits and go to town redoing your cylinders.  Ensure you bleed the line completely, get a few bottles of brake fluid.

If after all that is done and still same problem, go back to the parts truck and get a proportioning valve and replace your old one.  Re bleed all your brake lines again.

Do you have power brakes?  Is your booster working correctly when motor is running?

just a few thoughts.

Sounds like the booster you put on is worse than the one you replaced. They don't cost much new. I think I paid about $100 for the booster AND new master cylinder from Autozone.

if it sits too long, water will condinsate in the line and rust solid. I've seen it completely fill the lines and calipers. When we tried to bleed the lines, nothing. I don't know if two years is long enough?

The brake light switch is in front of the brake pedal. It probably got knocked when you were changing parts. Its adjustable with a nut on it.
