I braved the cold rainy desert weather this past weekend and started the tackling of the interior.
When I removed the dash there was much rust and corrosion next to the windshield...thanks to some great tips from JohnnyPopper I was able to combat it and prevent future rust....Thanks again JP!
Pictures in mixed order but you get the idea.

That’s just too cold for me, hopefully it doesn’t last.

Be careful if you have to take off the plastic gauge cluster cover. The screw holes are notorious for breaking and then you have to replace the whole cover. Just go slow taking out the screws and even slower when putting them back in.
-
Thank you for that great advice. I actually haven’t taken it off yet because I was a little nervous about breaking it.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
You would might want to wait until it warms up a bit to pull the cluster if you are worried about breakage. Plastic becomes more brittle as the temp goes down. We are about to go into deep freeze til march here in the northeast, but its been unseasonably warm here for the past week. Unbelievable we were 40 degrees higher than the southwest yesterday.
-
Good advice about the weather.
I just checked the forecast and mid 70s next week so hopefully I can get it out and back in while it’s somewhat warm.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
When you take the clear plastic off of the gauge cluster wash it in some warm soapy water with a very soft brush or rag. Then dry it carefully. You can polish them easily with some autobody wax. I used some basic Turtle Wax for a few wax on/off cycles and mine came out looking brand new.
-
Great tip! Thank you!!

Look at you! Nice work. So the truck began as blue?
If the cover is not great, they are real inexpensive.
Speaking of cold, I was working in WA last week, 25 degrees in the morning. Then rain...
-
Thank you!
Yes, I’m guessing it was once a teal kinda blue at one point...I find evidence of that everywhere.
Today I have pulled out the gauge lens, gauges, cluster insert, radio, door panels, shift indicator, light bulbs, weather stripping, scuff plates, head liner etc....etc....etc!
Lots of work to be done!
Wow! 25 is cold especially in WA...what part of Washington?

After I finished pulling out the rest of the dash components yesterday I couldn’t help but be reminded of a picture my mechanic text me a few weeks ago of the work being done on my daily driver.
There is something to be said about the simplicity of yester years.

Olympia area, Rainier to be precise.

This is one of the reasons I still love my old vehicles. Everything in this world has gotten so insanely complicated. Simple is nice.

It’s a Hummer H2 ...it went in for an oil change. Lol just kidding.
I thought the mechanic was sending me a joke until I realized it was actually a picture of my car.
It’s all better now.
Ahh....Olympia is beautiful. I miss Washington.

No one will bother. Modern vehicles are disposable.
I was in total disbelief the first time I had to disassemble and remove the entire dash structure door-to-door just to replace a heater core.

The dismantling on the H2 was for an A/C evaporator. The part itself was around $300 the labor was 21 hours judging by the pictures it was clearly a nightmare.
I just noticed the other day the passenger vent was blowing hot air with the a/c on and while drivers side blowing cool. I’m dreading having to take it back in. Not to mention there are a few other electrical things not working at all and some working intermittently.
All of the heating and cooling elements were removed from my 73’ prior to me purchasing it but I’m guessing having them both installed is going to pale in comparison to the H2 situation. Just a guess. Lol

Sounds like a dual zone system, like a Benz or Beemer, one side can call for heat, other for cool. Could just be a setting...hope?

Yes you are right, It does have dual climate control and I checked to make sure both systems were on cool and at the same temperature so unfortunately not that easy. I do think it’s a relatively easy fix and it’s just a sensor that has gone bad. I have had a similar problem with a former vehicle.

My truck didn’t come with the door panel pockets, I found a website that sells reproductions but they have been out of stock for weeks.
Fortunately I know someone who has the same truck and has the original panel pockets. He let me borrow one and I was able to make a pretty close replica and copy the exact mounting pattern.
See pics below....the one I did is black.

Could make door panel pockets and sell them if they are hard to get.
Believe manufacturers have made new model vehicles more complicated to work on than they need to be and it also feels like they make parts cheap (perhaps for them to break down) to make money off of repairs. Then again so much is made in foreign countries with little to no quality control.
-
Everything is made so cheap now. Looking at the photos of the reproductions I noticed they opted for single stitching at the top of the bag versus the original had two rows of stitching, 1 row above elastic and one below elastic. I chose to mimic the original design.
My family is from Michigan, I was born there and I have spent 1/3 of my life there. I reference this only because Michigan has a great deal of automotive makers and suppliers and most of my family members have or do work(ed) in automotive manufacturing. So much of that craftsmanship has been replaced by machinery and although it’s helpful and necessary it’s sad to know quantity supersedes quality.
I could tell by looking at the original door panel bag how much of it was hand crafted and although a machine sewed it there was a person doing them 1 by 1 and I wanted to stay true to that as much as possible.
Sorry for the long response its just one of those things that feels like a lost craft/art if you will.

I finally have both door panels done. Well....sans the pockets/bags because I haven’t made up my mind on the design.
I also purchased new arm rest but haven’t installed those yet.
I got these door panels off of eBay for $40 for the set plus shipping. An absolute steal if you ask me.
Below are the before and after.

I sat down to watch them in concert in 1980 at the SD Sports Arena, very popular venue for major labels in the day. Led, Bowie, Jackson Brown, the "Boss", WHO.
Some concerts aren't memorable for various reasons...this one was MOST.
We (GF) had just sat down. Someone passed a bomber, she took a hit and handed it to me, and I instinctively took a hit without thinking.
I had been talking to her about getting away for this lifestyle, realized she wasn't taking me seriously. I wasn't her fault I took the hit.
Most memorable was leaving immediately with or without her, her screaming at me through the parking lot about how much the tickets cost yada yada. Did NOT go back, can't remember if she did... ::)
Last time for me, never looked back :)
-
I’m cracking up Johnny!
My question is, whyyy oh whyyy did you choose that night at that concert of all places? Lol
I commend you though most people would say, starting tomorrow.....

BTW, really wasn't into the G.D. back in the day as much as she was. I do regret not just toughing it out and resolving it later. She went on to marry one of my friends some years later. So glad that was the end of a major "waste of time". (Drugs that is, not her. She was fun, but both too young)
As the wise man said, "There is a time for everything" it was time...
