Title: Started up after 23 years
Post by: Swampyankee74 on August 21, 2022, 09:12:07 PM
Today I started up my 74 c15 for the first time since 1999. Motor is a 250 i6. My son and I changed the oil, filter, put marvel mystery in each cylinder, fresh fuel in a small tank we hooked to the fuel pump, and new coolant. Pulled the distributor cap, gap was good, remarkably no corrosion. Turned the motor over by hand a bunch to hopefully get some oil on some dry parts. Didn't have to turn over to long before she fired off, was awsome to see. Now lets pray she doesn't spin a bearing. I don't plan on keeping this motor in the truck, but it will be cool to drive around for a little while.

Nice! Reminds me of the “Vice grip garage” show. Which is great by the way.

The 1975 Jimmy I bought had not ran since 1987-88 ish. To think that it runs so good blows my mind.

Keep the 250 I6. Always thought it was a great engine. Twice as cool now that I never see them anymore too.

That's awesome! How old is your son?

My '80 fired up after sitting for ten years, light compared to some of you guys.

Poured a couple of oz of gas down the carb vent, checked the oil, and boom!

The trans engaged forward and backward quick.

The motor is now in my K10, being replaced by a 383.

My son is 4, he's always asking if we can work on the truck. We set his own little tool box up. Hard sometimes but I try try to keep it fun for him.
I posted that first post in August. Since then we registered the truck drove it around town for a couple months. But we have the truck stripped down to a rolling chasis now. As for the motor it kept getting louder and louder. We tried adjusting valve lash, played around with it for a while. Previous owner told me the last time they drove it it overheated. The copper radiator had a hole In it when we fired it up.
