Purpose of cooler in front of radiator
« on: February 07, 2021, 09:37:43 AM »
I am new here, largely because I just bought an 83 K30.  So, it is all new to me.  Would appreciate any and all support/advice.  My K30 has a 454 and a 4-speed.  I do not know if it every had an automatic tranny, but there is an oil cooler in front of the radiator.  It is not connected to anything, but there are lines to be connected to.  Whatever its purpose, it isn't doing it.  Can anyone tell me what the cooler could be for?

Thanks!

Sounds like an auxiliary oil cooler someone added and it was disconnected.

Could have been an oil cooler. There's kits that have an adapter that fits onto the oil filter outlet for lines to feed the oil cooler filtered oil. The oil filter goes onto the adapter just like it used to go to the block.

GM used those adapter on their motor homes with Toronado Drive train.

It locks down with a gland nut to where the oil filter threads on.

The gland nut has the same threads for the filter, so it's sandwiched between the filter and block.

Fairly large tubing routes oil in and out.

Pros and cons on using one are sorted out by asking why you need extra cooling.
