Edelbrock 1406
« on: May 13, 2023, 02:41:21 PM »
For a '78 K10 350 CID

Any thoughts on this? I see some pretty good reviews, more pro's than con's.

Need to do something about gas mileage... ::)

I've been running one on a 305 in a Camaro for about 13 years now. It is decent, was pretty easy to tune, stays tuned, reliable. The biggest complaint I have about it is the heat soak and hot restart. Shut it down hot and dont restart within 5 minutes and it floods. Have to hold pedal to the floor to restart. Annoying, but I explored all other alternative fuel systems and pretty much decided they ALL have their cons.

Got another in a 1983 K30 on a 454. Never had the hot restart problem on it, probably due to the much more spacious engine bay to allow heat escape.

I dont think I would ditch a stock fuel system for the 1406 though. In my case the 305 and 454 lost their quadrajets long before I owned them. All fuel injection systems have their down sides too, but if they were still intact I think I would keep them working. Change isnt always better.

Understood, thanks!

I've been a Qjet fan for decades, in rebuilding them I've never thought I got it perfect but close.

The rebuild shops around here don't want to touch them, and recommend the 1406.

Maybe I could find a shop somewhere else in the country that has the task down pat.

I have one! It flooded so bad that fuel flowed all over. I went back to my Rochester and had no problems.

Hot restart is definitely a known issue but can be resolved with correct fuel pressure and a heat insulator base.

Good feedback guys! thanks!

Comes down to fuel economy-Will the Qjet win or EB?

I know there are variables, but in general... ;)

Q-jet will give better fuel economy

Why is fuel economy an issue? I am not trying to be mean, so please forgive me if I say the wrong thing. I don't believe anyone would have a 73-87 Square body if they are really concerned with fuel economy. I am more concerned with my truck running well. I don't see modifications making much of a difference unless you go to an electric motor kit.

To drive a square? That's a lot of money for gas!  ;D

I don't think you're being mean, I see yours and VZ's point. It's more the experience, and yes, the smiles and thumbs up.

She's my daily, and growing up in the '70's we were conditioned to stretch out the mpg starting in auto shop.

Keep it as well tuned as possible and the tires inflated!

BTW, found a outfit that sells rebuilt and flow tested QJet, going to call them. AND for a lot less than the EB

Thanks guys and gals!  ;)

While I'm at it I may as well consider a better intake manifold.

Sadly I have to keep an EGR option available.

Any suggestions? TIA!

Tough to beat the Edelbrock Performer for a dual plane, either the 2701 or 2601 IMHO.

Other than saving weight and dressing the engine with a "performance look" for $$, without a camshaft, higher flowing heads, and exhaust upgrades, there will be virtually no perceivable benefits.  Otherwise, if you are bored and simply anxious to change something, Edelbrock or Weiand.  Or, perhaps, a nice roots blower peeking out through the center of the hood...   ;D

Thx guys!

Too bad I live in a state that sucks the money out of old car/truck owners to control smog that doesn't existing anymore.
