trans rebuild or clutch/ TO bearing ? '84 C30
« on: January 25, 2023, 10:32:54 AM »
hi,

first post. i'll get some pics up later.
SO i have an '84 C30 454 3spd (plus a crawling gear) that has an aluminum rollback on it.

i have a holley sniper on it and she runs great! I am having a transmission issue though

When running, i can press the clutch in, put in any gear (usually reverse, ultra low or first) and i can let the clutch out plus some gas to get going. all good, until i want to shift while moving...
when Moving, i can press the clutch in but my shifter doesnt want to come out of gear. i can really tug it and get it into neutral, then rev match and get into the next gear but something isnt right.

i have a flywheel, clutch and new TO bearing for it. Im hoping it's not my synchros and the trans wont need a rebuild. from my research, i believe i have a muncie 465
it does have a PTO on the side of it for the hydraulic bed.

thoughts ?

thankfully it fits in my garage with about 1' to spare... so in about 2 weeks im going to be dropping the trans and check out what the clutch, TO bearing looks like.

Sounds like a transmission rebuild is in your future.  Nothing you describe sounds normal.  Even when my clutch slave went out I could match rpm and shift into all gears except L to get it home.

In both posts, double clutching or synchronizing the gears/engine speed allows shifting.

In your case, while driving, the engine and trans are not being de-coupled when the clutch is depressed, ergo the drag on the trans.

I know of some linkage issues that cause that.

Is yours mechanical or hydraulic?

Something went wrong with the mechanical linkage between the pedal and the throw out bearing.

I've seen worn out pedal rods, arms, pivot point balls, and the like.

The net result is the T/O bearing isn't being pushed far enough into the clutch to decouple the engine and trans.

Some models have an adjustment, some do not.

Having said that, I've seen clutch disc's installed backward too. Has this truck been worked on lately?

my rod that pushed the arm does have adjustments on it.

it hasnt had any work done on it previous of this happening. i had just picked up my buddies E30 from a fab shop, dropped it off, stopped for gas on my way home, when i went to leave the gas station the issue started. i was able to get it into 2nd and limp her home on backroads, then parked it for a few months. got my holley sniper and and headers on, she fires right up and runs great - i forgot about the clutch issue lol
so here i am, trying to tackle that now.

If you can push the clutch in at a stand still and put it in L or 1 and start out fine, your transmission is in need of something internally.

Forgot one other possible factor- have you checked your oil level?

trans oil level ? yes. it was a little low, i topped it off - took half a quart maybe ? no change

i finished my caprice last night ('13 ppv 6.0 w/ LSA blower). im going to vermont on wednesday for a snowboarding trip through the weekend then i'll pull it in my garage next week to drop it
