"Clunking" noise around transmission.
« on: November 07, 2006, 11:39:00 AM »
Hey guys, I'm new here.  I just traded my old nissan pickup for an '80 C10 Short bed.  It's got a 350 with I believe a TH350 tranny.  The mileage is up there, but it runs pretty strong, and it's a good project (once I learn more about it).

My question is this.  When the truck is in drive or reverse, and the engine is idling, there is a "clunking" noise that seems to be coming from the flywheel area.  Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't.  The noise and the way it happens almost sounds as if something down there is loose.  I haven't had a chance to pull it apart, but when I do, what should I look for?  Is there anything in there that could specifically be causing this problem, or will I just have to tear it apart to find out?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sounds like a cracked flexplate to me..look for cracks between the big holes in flexplate..

Also just check the flexplate to torque converter bolts as they can loosen up too.
