Title: Rebuilding steering column
Post by: GMFORLIFE on April 26, 2018, 09:27:07 PM
I received my truck with no keys.
73 Camper Special C20.
Tilt column..Great shape..but need to have keys made and ignition rod hooked back up.
I could probably source a used column..but looks like they run $300 without a steering wheel.
Anyone rebuild their tilt column.
Any tips?
Thanks.

Also pretty sure parts stores and other people will sell you new lock cylinder with new keys if you want to go that route. Otherwise Irish Alley is on the money!

New lock cylinder with keys is about $25 at just about any parts store

Rebuilding is not hard of you follow the directions and have the right wheel puller and lock plate pusher

You will also need a pivot pin puller.  This tool allows you to remove the pivot pins on which the column tilts.  Removal is necessary when you need to tighten the fasteners that have loosened, leaving you with the loose tilt.  If your tilt is not loose, you don't need to go this far.
