Title: por-15
Post by: p7387 on October 28, 2009, 09:01:49 AM
i know por-15 has been addressed many times before but my application needs further clarification as i have heard conflicting information.

the paint on the roof and hood of my 87 has worn away and there is surface rust which is starting to pit. this is a basic work truck so all i would like to do is stabilize it with por 15. i know that on a surface exposed to sunlight por15 needs to be covered. i have been told that por-15 can only be covered with a certain type of paint and that conventional paint will not adhere to it. when i called por-15 directly the rep. told me that i could go over the por-15 with any paint no problem even auto primer??? which course of action should i take?

also i know that por-15 sells the marine clean and the metal prep which they recommend using as part of the three part process. my truck is not a show truck so i do not want to invest too much time or money. what kind of results could i expect if i were to just scrape and clean the metal real well and just apply the por-15 direct???

thanks

problem is  as you know POR-15 needs a top coat, or you can buy UV resistant POR-15 but really for the money , you should sand it down and paint it with a sealer primer. a good sealer primer will do the same thing as por-15.

You can top coat it with anything.  If you want to stop the rust and you want POR15, you can get it and put it on.  If you want it to be shiny, just spray over it.

POR-15 is not UV resistant. I thought I could save money by buying the SILVER POR-15 and use that alone on my truck rims.  Within months I noticed they started taking on greenish hue in certain light conditions.  This past summer I had my friend who painted my truck, mix up some of the same silver used on the body and I repainted all four rims, then applied a couple coats of clear just for good measure.  They look 100% better now.

My 55 had the same issue your truck has on the roof. I sanded the surface rust with 80 then 180 grit. I brushed on Chassis Saver ( same stuff as POR 15, half the price ) I then sprayed high build urethane primer over it. Sanded the primerwith 400 grit, and painted it. You have to top coat Chassis Saver, or POR 15 within the window they recommend or it wont stick without there special etching primer. I have also sprayed right over them both with urethane enamel, and acrylic enamel.

thanks blazin-

i have a can of por15 here that i never used so i will be using that. if i follow your sanding recommendations can i than go over the por15 with a good quality regular black auto primer? if so what kind of a time window do i have? the truck is black so i will most likely leave it in the black auto primer until i decide to do the entire body some time down the road, my objective right now is just to stabilize before it gets worse.

BTW- who makes chassis saver?

thank you

Its a company called Magnetic Paints. If you do a search for Chassi Saver paint it will come up. What are you talking about by black primer? Anything in a spray bomb isn't worth a crap. Any lacquer primer that you reduce with lacquer thinner is worth the same. You need a urethane primer that uses a catalyst to actually cure the primer chemically.

Actually no they didn't.

POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.

The Topcoat is not uv sensitive....hence the links you posted.

only right way to do it is to sand and paint with a sealer primer. sealing out moisture and oxygen.
