16.5 inch to 16 inch rim - Tire size ?
« on: September 29, 2017, 07:14:59 AM »
Hello,
I have a 1981 Chevy C30 it has 16.5 x 8.75 Tires.
Just got six used 16 inch steel rims, I verified the rims fit and do not rub on the drums or front caliper.
Now I am wondering what is the best tire size to put on these rims I am thinking 235 or 245 but would like your input.
Thanks,
Jim

I run a 235/85/16 on my 74, and plan to run those on the 80 dually also.  they seem to be close to the stock tire size from what I could figure out.

The most common sizes for 16.5" replacement are 245/75R16 or 235/85R16  (therefore they are usually the cheapest) .  The 235/85R16 is about an inch larger diameter, but it still fits fine.

For a C30 you also need to look for load range E (10 ply rating) tires, if you want to keep the load rating for your truck.  The 245/75R16 size is very common on half ton trucks, but most standard tires won't have the load rating you need.

I have a K25 Camper Special, with an 8400 lbs load rating that originally had 16.5 x 9.50 tires.  I usually just shop around for size and load rating E in 16", and see who has the best out-the-door price.  I don't do any off-roading, so I look for a moderately aggressive all terrain tread.  I am currently using Firestone Destination A/T 245/75R16E.

I just picked up a 1977 C20 Camper Special,am going to use it as a Home Depot runner at my house in the desert.
It currently has some passenger car tires on 16 in rims.
The roads are mostly sandy and I think I am going to need wider tire to carry heavy loads thru the sand.
I was looking at going with the Duratrac LT265/75-16 will the fit the front without rubbing?
