Transmission swap questions, TH350 to TH200-4R
« on: March 18, 2003, 10:33:00 PM »
Okay, I know that the TH200-4R is the same length and has the same output shaft(size and splines) as a TH350, and I know they're designed to bolt to a Chevy small-block V8 as well, but what all would be involved in swapping one into my '75 Chevy pickup? I'd go with rebuilding the TH350 I have in it now, or the TH400 that's in the Suburban my dad and I are parting out, but I want overdrive for gas mileage, and I'm not particularly fond of TH700-R4s (I have/had one in a Camaro, S-10, and Suburban, none survived very long) are the TH200-4R TV Cable and carburetor parts the same as the 700-R4 ones?

here's the most info I've found on the 200-4R so far: www.gnttype.org/techarea/...vs350.html

Thanks for any help guys!

Just did this swap in my 79. First off, the 2004r is the same length as a 6" tailshaft th350. All truck th350's use a 9" tailshaft, so a new driveshaft or a modify'd one will be needed. The 2004R has a universal bellhousing, so it will bolt to any GM motor. It uses all the same stuff as a 700R4. I hate 700R4's too!

Thanks a TON man! That's the last info I need to start my buildup/resto on my pickup... the TH350's either gonna be replaced by the 200-4R or a 4-spd manual, haven't decided yet, but I've already found a possible parts truck with the 4-spd in it already so it seems more likely at the moment.

Again, THANKS!

Yea 700R4's do suck, my truck is on its third, luckily I only had to change it once, if it goes again I have a nice TH350 to put in.

if a 700R4 is built correct and all the bad parts replaced they are pretty good trannies. have seen many behind somr HiPo bigblocks putting out tins of torque. You can never go wrong with a TH400..............

I've looked at "built" 700R4's and Id love to have one, I think when done right they are a great tranny. They are crappy stock, especially with high miles and being used for plowing, I think thats what killed mine.

well if you are subjecting it to plowing and heavy stress id recommend a TH400, but if not then a 700 will do if built correct and post 85 model i believe.

Before I bought my truck it was used for plowing, I'd never use it to plow, thats what the smokin77 K10 is for! Its got a 400SB and a TH350, no brakes,we just shift to the opposite direction your moving to stop it!!

The good years for 700R4's are 88+up. When built right, they can handle about 400-450hp. I have yet to meet someone with a 500hp+ big block and fully built 700r4 that has lived. The 2004R dosent have bad years. It was designed correctly the first time around. The 2004R, in fully built form, can actually handle a little more power then a fully built 700R4 can. Everyone forgets the poor 2004R, but thats ok. Leaves more of them for me :D

well i know some guys running the 700 behind big blocks pushing out some power.......but the tranny with overdrive thats prefered is the 4L80E. i believe the 2004R came out in the buick T types and the Grand Nationals. they have a solid tail shaft that is not removable.

i have a 86 Buick T Type National but im running a BOP TH400 it ran a 11.88 @ 118 on street tires. It smoked the tires about the first 60 FT and the motor has never really been dialed in.

I like the TH400.... it lives under my big foot..... dont let me have a manual.... clutches go quick for me. BIG BURNOUTS. The only manual and last one I had was a granny 4 speed.... I couldnt kill it but i could smoke them for miles.... the set of futuras I had didnt even last 6 months and those were with two clutchs. FUN FUN.
