Plug Wires
« on: February 10, 2003, 09:43:00 PM »
I just put headers in my 85K10(0n my 350) I was wondering if ill need to change my plug wires to high-heat ones so they wont melt. Its been a few days so far, around town driving hasn't affected them yet but its also below freezing here in CT. Has anyone else put headers in and had problems with  the stock wires?
thanks, Tony

When I first bought my truck it had headers and stock wires.  The were burnt!  I don't know how long it took, but, heat can take a toll on anything  electrical.  In fact, the reason I bought a new set was I found I had a dead cyl.  due to a bad plug wire.  I think header temps.  can get to about 1200 plus?

route the wires in a neat fashion away from the header tubes. Buy custom fit wires and not those cheap ass wires that are a mile long. if need be DEI makes heat prtective slip overs for the boot ends. www.summitracing.com

My wires turned hard no matter what they are. The boots were like rocks. Get a cheap set of Accels or a good brand instead of autozones lifetimes.

I bought heat reflective tape in a 25 ft roll - cheaper then those boots. The tape won't stick to the boots and wires by themselves so I used wire clips. works great the best part is there is enough tape to do it on 2 sets of wires

I've never ran stock plug wires, too much restance! I run Splitfire plugs & wires. The wires only have 250 ohms of restance, comapred to over 1000 ohms for stock.
