intakes and cams

I would find a decent cam not to big... not bigger than a .480 lift.... unless it has alot of miles. Go with a .450 to a .460. To go along with that cam a set of lifters, timing chain, and a gasket set. The q-jet will work aslong at it would bolt to the intake. No biggie and timing borrow a timing light and just play with it until you find a happy medium. check it, change it, and drive it until you find it.

If you get a bigger cam, use new valve springs.  Most definitely keep the Q-jet.  The off-idle response, gas mileage will be better, and the power will not suffer a bit.  Also look into cold-air induction, whether home-made or store-bought.
