85 C10 Ignition
« on: November 27, 2013, 06:19:08 PM »
I am rebuilding my engine and would like to upgrade the ignition system. I have been reading and am still not sure which application is best for me. My build is:
block 3970010 65-79 Chevy 350 5.7L in 85 C10 body.
aluminum heads 68cc 200's PBM valve upgrade 9.5:1 compression, roller rockers, max lift .550
.030 flat top pistons
.467 lift hydraulic flat tappet cam
Holley 650cfm 4B carb
Hedman headers
Edelbrock dual plane performer intake
new distributor installed by NAPA
8mm spiral wound plug wires (MSD recommends 8.5)
I found this:
http://www.jegs.com/i/MSD+Ignition/121/85001/10002/-1
...which is the HEI kit. MSD's site lists the 6al for my truck which this kit includes but my question is is this kit all I need? It contains the coil, dist. wire, ignition 6al module. Does that just plug and play with my current distributor setup? I read somewhere about MSD burning up stuff if it isn't just right.
Thanks in advance.
JB

Get rid of the Napa distributor and go full MSD. You will not regret it. It's probably the most skipped over beneficial mod you can do.
