14 bolt questions
« on: October 05, 2008, 07:59:30 PM »
Hey guys, found a 1982 C20, 2wd, manual trans 6.2 diesel truck.  I was looking at the rearend, appears to be the 14 bolt with 10.5 " gear, any ideas what gear ration it might've been on this truck?  Wondering if I should try to snag it for future transplant into the Burb, as I have the standard 1/2 ton 10 bolt.  I figure it is a bit wider than the Burb rear.  Not sure what it would be worth, but I think I can get whatever parts I wanted from the truck- which is basically just the mentioned drivetrain parts and a well used up/rusted partial body.  Interior mostly gone, couldn't find any codes to reference...

It will most like be a semi floating rear (no hubs).  The are normally geared relatively high and some had 4.10's.  It is a bonus if you plan to do a lot of towing, but otherwise the 10 bolt would be fine.

Dito on what Chris said. Also it is the same width as the ten bolt.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

A full floating axle supports none of the weight of the vehicle. It's bolted in on these axles and is nothing more than a connection between the differentil side gears and the driving hubs your wheels are bolted to.

A semi floating axle supports the weight of the vehicle on the axle with bearings.

on a full float, it will have a hub like a 4x4 with no lock/unlock tab.  It will protrude from the wheel center about 6"
a semi-float will look just like your 10bolt, everything will be flush with the back of the rim.

ok, so this must be a full floater- cause it had a hub sticking out with several bolts appearing to attach it .  might be worth snagging, even for a resale to someone that needed the HD capability..

Does the truck run?  If you can get it cheap it wouldn't be too bad a deal.

I sold a full float out of a 1985 Suburban for $300.  You might luck out and see the ratio stated on the sticker on the glove box.  If it has the sticker on the door still you can look up the code, this is assuming it has not been changed.
