Max Speed with 250 i6 and 3 speed Saginaw?
« on: May 29, 2020, 01:08:48 PM »
Hi,
I'm sorry i tried to find the info at the internet and also in this forum.
For the german approval,  i need the maximum speed the truck can reach.

I‘ve allready looked at the archives at https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/
Perhaps i‘ve read over the information, i don‘t know.

Where can i find the info?

Regards
Chris

I could be wrong. However, I do not think you will find a max speed. Too many variables, age and condition, gear ratio, transmission, engine, wheels, suspension, and so on. Can you get it on the autobahn and see what it can do?

Hi Mike,
in germany, for each car we have a dokument with also all the information, you have enumerated
and much more, like max speed (the info the manufacturer gave at the the car was delivered) minimum and maximum weight per axle, which fuel...
if i change the springs, it has to be written in it by governement and every other change at the car which has imact on the driving behavior.

So, to get the truck on the road, i need as much official manufacturer info as possible.
If i don‘t find all of it, we‘ll see, what the tester will do.

Perhaps GM never had given this information.

Chris,

You might point out that the nation had a speed limit that everyone was prohibited from driving above.

not that anyone listened... ::)

Hi Johnny,
you are right, i didn‘t think about that  ;)
Then it makes no sense to give the information of the top speed of the car,
you‘ll never reach it, if you‘re not a getaway driver or driving an acceleration race :D

That was the biggest challenge for me, while i drove down the east coast.
Every state seems to have his own top speed policy, and the roads signes are not really visible for me.
In germany, if there is a speed policy, it‘s a round sign with a big red stripe around.
Your signs only are white with a small black small stripe, so i think i‘ve only registered perhaps 60-70%. So i drove most time as slow as the slowest people at the interstate, because i wasn‘t interested in a meeting with highway patrol people ;)

Okay then i‘ll try it, it i drive to the car checkpoint where they‘ll appraise the car.

Regards
Chris

I would have to say if they need a number, then I would use the the highest number on the speedometer installed in your vehicle.

You can try to use your VIN number to look up appraisal information at one of the U.S. Web sites, such as Blue book or NADA and it may give you some information about your vehicle or you could contact GM and request the information.

I can tell you that a practical mean piston speed of a stock engine like a 250 is about 3,500 ft/min (1066.8 m/min). Because your 250 has a stroke of 3.875 inches, that equates to a top RPM in the engine of about 5,500 RPM.

We can determine the rolling circumference of your tires and the final gear ratio, but most vehicles do not have enough power to reach max RPM at top speed. Because of rolling resistance in the tires, and more importantly aerodynamic drag at speed. At the time your vehicle was manufactured, I doubt anyone at GM was concerned with aerodynamic drag and top speed of a pickup truck, so that information is very likely not available.

I was thinking he might be able to use the VIN to get information (other than speed) about his truck. Special options it came with and standard equiped information.

Hi,

thanks for all your thoughts and help!
Using the VIN is poorly no option, a sites i‘ve tried need 17 digits, but mine has only 13 we.
Now i have all information, exept the top speed, so the tester has to do his work and must find it out for him selve.
