I have found a 1993 GMC Sierra 1500 2 wheel drive short bed stepside truck. The rear axle died and was replaced with a 9.5" 14 bolt 3/4 ton rear end. The 350 TBI engine runs fine other than needing power a power steering pump. The truck has no rust or dents at all, and has only 85000 miles on it. The only preoblem is that the 4l60e transmission is dead, supposedly. It only goes into 1st gear. If the thing is indeed dead, how hard is it to swap out the 4l60e for a TH350 or 400? I have found a TH350 at a local wrecking yard for $100.00. The truck is $150.00, so, if all else fails, I will use the engine to fix my 78 for now.

The 4L60E trans is computer controlled. Later TH 350s have some computer control but not to the extent of the 4L60Es.
For $150 if the rest of the truck is solid, why not get the trans in it rebuilt?
-
I already have a spare TH350 from a 1980 C-10. I was wondering if I could just install it and use it for now until I get the 4l60e replaced? Or will the fuel system be all messed up if I remove it?

The tranny doesn't have any to do with the fuel, but if the VSS is on the tranny the computer will probably have problems.

I will try to convey my exact problem here. I do not have the funds or time to get the 4l60e rebuilt. So, now for another question, will the 1993 350ci block have a fuel pump boss? If it does, then the engine will go in my 78 and so will the stepside bed. If not, then it goes to the crusher. I have no wheels right now and therefore need to make something work. I just need to know two things, does the block have a fuel pump boss and will an old style intake bolt to the 1993 heads? Sorry if I am coming off as rude, I am not trying to be, just kind of in a hurry to get something fixed for once.

Intake won't just bolt on.
The '93 engine probably doesn't have a fuel pump boss. Chris Lucas

What will be different on the intake? I don't mind running an electric pump if I need to though. I know that it is not a vortec engine. Does that help any? Sorry to be vague, but details are sketchy at the moment.
-
If you are guessing on this setup, I can't really help. Cause I will be guessing also. Can you not go look at the truck? IF there is a difference, the bolts will be perpendicular to the ground instead of the head.

I can look this evening. I know that it is not a vortec and that the front 4 bolts were perpendicular to the head. They did not point down.

my 94 350 block had a boss for the mechanical pump, but it may be hit or miss because the new engine i out in did not.
as far as the intake goes the old (pre 86) will not bolt onto the new heads with out modifing a few bolts holes, or you could get a new intake for the new style heads but with a carb set up. the 93 4l60e does not use a kickdown cable like the 400 or 350, nor does it use a speedo cable. it uses a vss to read a 40pulse per revolution signal which is required to run the speedo and fuel injection. you can make any trans it work in the 93 (alot of money + time= just about any thing you can dream up) but it will be alot cheaper to just find another 4l60e. now if the truck was a 92 you would be set. just my 2 cents. steve

Do I need to modify the center holes on the intake to make it work? I ahve a HJolley Street Dominator that I can use. Edited by: 1976Scottsdale at: 1/18/06 1:54 pm

I have seen a guy caveman the holes in the center of an aluminum intake to fit the injected heads. It worked but I would sugest have it done by a machine shop.
-
Okay, I can see where that would be better. I have a set of 601 casting 305 heads that have been hogged out and cuto to 1.94/1.50 valves and are now ~58cc rather than 53cc. Could I bolt these onto the 1993 block and run with them? Just wondering before I send my 3970014 block to get a .060 overbore and build a junk engine.
