Projector headlight conversion [LOOOOTS OF PICS!!!]
« on: January 14, 2011, 11:39:47 AM »
I found these on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140498842069&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
They seem like a really good deal and I'm planning on buying them. Their one of the cheapest sets I could find. My question is, would they mount just like a normal 6024 headlight? I have replaced a standard sealed beam before, but I havent dealt with the conversions so I dont know if they mount the same way. I'm going to buy these housings now and then buy an HID conversion kit in the next few days-week or so. I just want some BRIGHT headlights.

you'll lose your high beams if you go HID.

Those use a standard H4 bulb, so High beam is still available. These are not HID, they are Projectors. If you want the true HID look at these kits:
http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/Apexcone-Raptor-HID-Kit
But you will need new headlights like are available from several different vendors, like this one:
http://www.slickcar.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=1033
I have never run a set myself, but plan to. I have heard great reviews from those that have run them.

My grandpa got HID for his bday he used em for about 3 months and bought stock replacements cause they sucked.  I would stick with a xenon upgrade and leave it at that.  HIDs are junk.

I would think the chrome housings would reflect a little more light as well.

I have yet to find a vehicle with headlights brighter than mine.  I have the 89-91 quad lights, replacement sylvania bulbs and a relay so all 4 are on with the high beams, nothing comes even close.  I will try the projectors as soon as these burn out.  Hopefully they are even better.

Well, these are just projector housing with the h4 bulb. But, there are hid conversion kits that convert the standard h4 to hid. I just need to know how to mount the projector conversion housong.

Okay, I just recently found how to get the pictures off of my new phone, so I will post the install and the before and afters. I started out with Sylvania Halogens.

Low beam

Low beam with fogs

High beam

High beam with fogs

High beams head on

The conversions....

The install...
First, remove your headlight bezel and original bulb

I went ahead and replaced the plastic grommets for the adjustment screws

Re-mount the headlight bucket

Put the ring around the conversion light

And install into bucket just like a standard replacement

Install the wires just like normal, I had to remove them from the plastic clip, because it was contoured to the shape of a sealed beam.

And if you want, hook these wires into your parking light circuit or to a separate switch, I left mine unhooked for now.

Re install your bezel and adjust, and Enjoy. Here are some after photos. I got the black housing, because it is a projector housing and it DOES NOT rely on reflection. The projector lens in the middle magnifies the light into a flat beam onto the road, and the housing kind of reflects light, but it mostly relies on the lens. The bulbs they sent me were very dim, as they had a blue film around them. So I replaced them with a 15$ set of Sylvania H4 bulbs(the bulb type the housing accepts) and it is like 5 times as bright. Yet, the projector design is intended for use with HID lights. So, standard halogen do them zero justice. I am ordering an HID kit in the next week or so, as I hate having dim lights. ONE of my 65w 20$ pair of fog/driving lights is brighter than my High beams. )= So, I ordered HIDs and I put 100w bulbs in my fog lights to help get me by.

How the housing lights up, in person, this is how it always looks, even looking head on. Unless you look into the direct beam of the projector lens.

Low beams head on

Low beams on road(brighter in person)

High beams head on

High beams on road(once again, brighter in person)

I will post back with HID install. I will be ordering the BI-Xenon Bulbs, which allow for High and Low beams. And I will be ordering 12000k, which is purple. Just for sake of self preservation, I would rather not argue with anyone on the legality of purple headlights, I'm going to buy them either way. Haha. Thanks for reading.

Also, i ordered my HID kit tonight. Should ship from March 1-3. That is if theres no problems like the last kit I ordered and the ended up being out of stock. I got REALLY lucky. I ordered them right before the poster updated his listing. The were originally $48 and were on sale for $38 with free shipping. An hour or so after I bought them, he updated his post to original price $79 sale price $63 with free shipping. LUCKY.

Or the legality of the HID kit that you are going to install, the complex reflectors you just installed, or the 100 W bulbs!  As a side note there are legal Complex Reflectors with the replaceable bulbs out there for the 7" round headlamps.  I know the ones from Hella are legal.  Truck-lite also makes a legal 7" round as well which uses a sealed HB5 bulb.

I'm not saying anything about the legality of it, as if i wanted them I'd buy them too ;D, but the HIGHER the color temperature, the LOWER the actual light output.  For example, the lowest color temp headlight is the yellow ones.  They put out more usable light than any higher temp.  By usable light I mean usable by the human eye.  Human eyes are attuned to see best with the light the yellow lights put out.

Some of those 10K+ lights are pretty dim looking or have a shorter beam down the road compared to say a 5000k light.   I have 6000k or so in mine.  I just wanted it blue enough to not have a brownish noticeable color like stock lights.

Good luck and have fun with it!
