Title: 383 anyone?
Post by: Texarado on August 08, 2005, 03:23:00 PM
I recently aquired a fresh 383 (stroked 350, I told a guy this the other day and he thought I was goiung Mopar) to replace the crusty old 305. I will be running all the smog junk to pass emisions laws.

Any known problems to watch for?

If you are using manifolds for the exhaust, the 305 might not bolt up.  I would check.  Otherwise, everthing else should work.

Does the 383 require a special harmonic balancer?

It uses the matching 400 SBC balancer and flexplate/flywheel.

Yes, use the 400 flexplate and balancer or after market unit that's externally balanced. Nothing externally is different that I know of.

You didn't mention if you have fuel injection or a carb.  when i replaced my 79 350 w/ a 383 i but a new edelbrock quadrajet that was EGR reay.  I replaced my egr too.  It was such an easy changeover, i was amazed.  see:

www.delbridge.net/install

Everything from you 305; alt, a/c, power steering, etc. should bolt right up.  Your starter may have to be replaced if it has the two bolts that are not off-set, but paralell to the end of the block.  I forget what the 305 starter is but i think it is not off-set bolt pattern. I didnt have to change mine due to it already have the 350 off set bolt pattern.

Email me if you have any questions, been there, done that.

It has the Edelbrock Victor Intake on it that had a 850 Edelbrock carb on it. I'm going to have to run the stock 305 intake (if it fits) to maintain the EGR and other emmission stuff. I currently am running the Edelbrock 650 on the 305.

Thanks for the link to your website. Pretty neat install. Camping, Hot Rod motor and Bluegrass. Sounds good to me.

Yeah, I love the good things in life, having fun, plenty of horsepower, and great tunes.

I kept my EGR stuff intact by using an edelbrock performer alum. intake #3701.  I also used the edelbrock 1903 q-jet carb.  These work great for the late 70's-mid 80's equipment. Simple bolt-ons to the original stuff.   Check out pawinc.com and request their catalog (performance autoparts wharehouse incorporated).  Their giant catalogs are chock full of info.  great prices too.
