Engine removal checklist?

     Anyone have a detailed checklist for pulling an engine?  What to unhook, drain, unbolt, and in what order?

     I'm planning to swap the 350 that's currently in my '76 GMC into the '80 short-wide that I recently picked up in the very near future.  Thanks in advance for any help!

it's all obvious.   Doesnt really matter what order, except unhook the driveshaft, transmission, linkage, crossmember, starter and cables....
remove your hood, gas line at the fuel pump, carb linkage, trans kickdown cable
remove radiator, charcoal canister lines, distributor, wire to distributor, alt. wires, exhaust manifolds, then put a chain on the engine and put a little tension and remove engine mounts.

keep plenty of ziplock bags and put bolts in them and lable the bags with a sharpie or masking tape.  You have a digital camera?  take many pics...

I always start with the battery (remove)
I always remove the carb to prevent damage, the distributor too.
I always drain the fluids
Leave the power steering hoses and pump connected to the truck/ same with the AC compressor and hoses.
Remove the fuel pump so the motor mount bolt will come out
The average 73-87 GM truck carb flange sits 10" below the radiator support
The average SBC is 26" from pan to carb flange
You need 40" of lift minimum, (the front end of the truck will raise 4" or more once the engine weight is off the springs.)
I'm sure others can add to the list.

REMOVAL



Disconnect battery cables at battery.
Drain cooling system.
Remove air cleaner.
Remove all accessory drive belts.
Remove fan and water pump pulley.
Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at engine.
Disconnect heater hoses at engine.
If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect cooler lines at radiator.
Remove radiator and shroud.
Disconnect accelerator linkage and detent linkage, if so equipped, from carburetor.
If A/C equipped, remove compressor from engine and lay aside. Do not disconnect lines from compressor.
If power steering equipped, remove pump from engine and lay aside.
Remove engine wiring harness from engine.
Disconnect fuel line at fuel pump.
Disconnect all vacuum lines from intake manifold.
Raise vehicle.
Drain crankcase.
Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold flanges.
"K" models with automatic transmission, remove strut rods at motor mounts.
Remove flywheel or converter splash shield, as applicable.
Disconnect wiring along right pan rail.
Disconnect wiring at starter and remove starter.
Disconnect wiring for gas gauge.
If equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter to flex plate attaching bolts.
Support transmission.
Remove bellhousing to engine retaining bolts.
Remove lower engine mount bracket to frame bolts.
Lower vehicle.
Remove vehicle hood.
Attach engine lifting device.
Remove engine.
INSTALLATION



Place engine in vehicle.
Raise vehicle.
Install engine mount bracket to frame bolts.
Install bell housing to engine retaining bolts. Remove transmission support.
If equipped with automatic transmission, install converter to flex plate attaching bolts.
Install flywheel or converter splash shield, as applicable.
Connect wiring for gas gauge.
Install starter. Connect wiring.
Install engine wiring harness along right pan rail.
Connect exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold flanges.
Lower vehicle.
Connect all vacuum lines to intake manifold.
Connect fuel line at fuel pump.
Install engine wiring harness to engine.
If power steering equipped, install pump on engine.
If A/C equipped, install compressor on engine.
Connect accelerator linkage and detent linkage, if so equipped, to carburetor.
Install radiator.
If equipped with automatic transmission, connect cooler lines to radiator.
Connect heater hoses to engine.
Connect radiator hoses to engine.
Install water pump pulley and fan to water pump.
Install accessory drive belts. Adjust to specifications.
Fill cooling system.
Fill crankcase.
Connect battery cables and start engine. Check timing and carburetor adjustment and adjust if necessary.
Install air cleaner and vehicle hood.

Thank you.  This is good information.  I have never done this before, nor watched it done other than on TV.  I want to be sure I don't miss something before hand and cause some problem or unnecessary delay during the process.  I guess I'm the kind of person that benefits from using a checklist to ensure that kind of stuff doesn't happen and it goes smoothly.

i've just had to go thru this fiasco(again) so...........

In my opinion, you really need 3 or 4 people to help----buy lots of beer, or if more appropriate, candy, or flowers, rings etc.    Seriously.

2) i've found that, technically, you can do this--remove as well as install the engine WITHOUT taking the hood off on these trucks.   You would still need to unbolt the "spring supports" and prop the hood up safely with a 2X4 and/or tie it back with a strap.   However, there is nothing wrong with taking the hood off;  You'll need to scribe it so that it aligns properly when you put it back on.

3) i would recommend using a tilter mechanism.

4) in my opinion, i think it is better to take only the engine out----not the engine and trans together.  This is only my opinion as of this point---others may disagree with good reason.

5) get lots of paper towels.  As in go to sam's club and get a 12 package.

6) Unless you're not concerned about your garage's floor, suggest putting down plastic tarp or equivalent because stuff(fluids) IS going to get on the floor no matter how careful you are.

i have a very lengthy, detailed diatribe describing my "ordeal" involving my 3rd and 4th engine swaps involving my truck.  The actual swaps were exhausting enough---but the reasons for the swaps themselves was just sad---even tragic.   i will provide the link shortly after i recover from overwork at work.

However, you have nothing much to fear............
