Folks:
I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question, but my memory is failing with years...
I have a 76 Chevy truck. It has 520,000 miles on the frame. The 350 engine went out years ago and I replaced it with a 1984 (or so) 305. That engine had more miles on it than the one I took out and is now over 600K! For the first time, the water pump is leaking. I thought no problem...look at RockAuto. BUT....apparently 305 wasn't an option in 76 trucks. They list a number of pumps for 350. I looked at 84 305 water pumps. Again a number of pumps were listed, but the numbers were different from those for the 350. So...Now for my question.....
Is the short vs. long pump issue the only thing to worry about or is (are) there other things to cause problems? Does anyone have a recommendation on which pump to use? I want to try for another 600K!
Sorry for so many words....I hope one of you guys can help me!

If the alternator and power steering brackets are original to the truck just get a long water pump standard rotation.

An easy way to be sure is remove water pump and take to auto parts store to get exact match. Always a good idea when unsure.

I agree. But in this case, it's my ride. It's a long way to the parts house, and would take a couple of hours to walk there! That's why I took the 'easy' way out and asked for advice. There are some pretty smart folks on this forum, and I appreciate all the help I can get.

I was about to start my own thread, but going to add to this one instead...
Anyway, my water pump looks like it is leaking, too. Can the water pump be taken apart and fixed or is it better to just replace it?

A new one ranges from about $14 - $40 dollars. They're throw away items

Generally, all small block chevy water pumps interchange with each other (although you have to make sure you need either the long or short pump---most likely you need the long pump to match your accessory brackets and pulleys----and even the short and long pumps themselves interchange on the engine itself. MOST applications use the long pump)
i am not sure at the moment which stock-type iron pumps are decent. i did not have good luck with the Advance auto parts budget line.
i went with an Edlebrock 8811 and am very impressed with the quality.
