Yes you are. What year make model engine do you have? The ESC module is under the hood. Ignition module is in the distributor. The ECM is under the dash.

ahh, its an 82 gmc with a 305. i tried following the pink wire out of the distributor but it just goes into a loom full of pink wires so that wasnt real fruitful. im betting 90 percent that i need to switch to non-esc after reading through some of the posts on here describing similar stuttering problems, that and everyones telling me the esc system was a horrible setup.

http://73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/escrepl.htm

i read the cheapo conversion here for cutting/splicing the wires and unhooking the lead from the esc computer. after doing that can i switch to a non esc distributor without problem? wont have the money for a few days, just want to try the ghetto version and see if it helps, before i order one from the summit bible.

actually in that how-to it says to hook the pink wire to the bat terminal on the distributor, mine already runs to the bat terminal, possible someone already did this since i cant find the esc module?

also noticed that the distributor isnt bolted down....... think thats why my timing seems off now? lol. i turned it a hair counter clockwise and it seems to run better, need to get my buddys gun again.

OK that is a totally different design. Here is a schematic. Click on the direct link for a better view. Also set your base timing first.

vile are there supposed to be other wires running out of the distributor? i have the pink one that runs to the bat terminal, and then there are 3 that run from the coil to the distributor, guessing to the ignition module, and that appears to be it.

You don't have ESC then.  Someone must have changed it already.

The timing was off of where it needed to be. couldnt drive it earlier because i didnt have my daughters booster seat. the woman came home.

took it down the block and could tell it had been advanced too far, backed it off probly half of where i had put it, and the truck has actual power, i can pull up hills, hit 65 on an on ramp that i was previously hopping onto the big road at 40 from. now if i could get it to start and stay running when its cold.

ITS ALIIIIIIVE.
