700r4 Transmission Issue
« on: June 08, 2021, 09:47:32 PM »
I have 87 suburban with a 1406 Edelbrock carburetor and 700r4 haven't had any problems with it until after i went trail riding my transmission doesn't want to shift out of 1st. but the weird part is that eventually after maybe 10 mins of cruising up and down my street it will shift and after that its back to normal and shifts great until I turn it off, it cools down and then start it back up it goes right back to not shifting out of 1st. i checked the TV cable and there does seem to be a kink in it i purchased a new one and also a filter. i just don't understand why after it shifts its back to normal it doesn't seem like a TV cable issue. just was wondering if theirs anything else i should check while i have the pan off

Did the vacuum line come off the modulator? (assuming that model has one 8))

No vacuum modulator

Check TV cable, make sure it is set and working. Check Governor next.

I replaced the tv cable but I noticed that the plunger isn't going all the way in and I'm maxed out on the amount the cable will click out. Do I need to shorten the cable or adjust the bracket or something?

Also I tried to access the governor but it's so tight up there I couldn't get at it to get the cap off and I'm really not trying to drop transmission is there an easy way to do this or do I just have to work at it

Two things are the most likely cause. Sticking governor valve or sticking TV valve. TV valve is pretty common. It doesn't have a return spring and it is a common point of no shift after a rebuild or you could have debris floating around. We always add a spring to the valve on rebuild or valve body removal. It is is most shift kits or can be bought separately. it is a very weak but effective spring for this fix. Next time it does it try this. With engine off stop the gas pedal to the floor about ten times and the start vehicle and test. If it shifts it is probably the TV valve. It may clear up on its own but if it doesn't you will need to drop valve body and add spring.

I had this same problem with the the same setup. I used a tv kit from bowtie overdrives and like magic it stopped. I can tell you it’s not an easy project. There is a lot to it but my truck shifts like a dream now. I hope you get it fixed cuz 700r4’s ain’t cheap
