I installed a new ACC carpet in my 73. It had the mass backing and the jute padding already press formed to the carpet. How far from the door seals should I trim the carpet? I don't have the door sills yet and currently just trimmed it and tucked it down next to the seals.

Do Not trim anything until you have it laying just like you want and you have your sills and any other trim on hand.  for trimming the sills you need the sills so you know how much to trim.

Would I need the sound deadener if I get carpet with the mass backing?

I wouldn't think so.  The number one thing I found to quiet things down inside is to put sound deadender inside the doors inside of the outer skin.  My doors sound almost like a modern car door when shutting.

By all means avoid the products like Hush Mat. They dry up and lose their sound deadening properties.

Look up 'Second Skin'- way different.

I can't remember what I put in mine, it was a V1 or V2 something.  Installed in 2008, and its still stuck on there good and made my doors sound almost like modern doors closing.  I say almost because you can hear the latch latching.

Is the plastic ring on your door latch post shot out? If so, they make replacements. I need 4... ::)

Or is it the latch itself? Grease her up and slide her down... ;)
