Title: HELP: truck is very hard starting
Post by: shootinmanbwh on September 16, 2007, 10:30:36 PM
I have a 73 c10 with a 454 and a th400 auto.  I put a brand new holly 4bbl on it, a brand new battery and cables, new cap, rotor, plugs and wires.  The truck will turn over very slowly at first until it drains the battery.  If I jump it, it will turn over fast enough to start otherwise, the battery just gets killed.  The alt is working.  Could this be a timing problem???

Sounds like a bad new battery to me.

I agree with battery, because the battery is what powers the starter and if it is how you described, then it seems the most logical part that is to blame.

How does it run once it is started?  In addition to the battery, you might want to check the soundness of your cable connections and also that you got the plug wires in the right order.

sounds to me like an earth (ground?) problem. If it flies over with a jump start then your using the earth from the vehicle jumping it. Check Batt leads to the body/chassis and the lead to the engine. Hope this helps

are the new cables the right guage?  If not, it will do as you say it is doing, and get very hot.

Well, I found the problem finally.  I did all of my voltage drops, and everything was ok.  I found that the owner before me put a low torque starter on a 454, and it needs a high torque starter.  thanks for all the help.
