Title: My new build thread. 1977 C10 shotry
Post by: BADAZ chevy guy on April 08, 2014, 02:15:51 AM
I went and got my truck yesterday. A 1977 C10 short box Heavy half. All I've done so far is get rid of the tires I got with it and put on stock wheels and tires. Priority 1 is to get it running so I can drive it while I hunt for parts.
I would love to post pics, but the site won't let me. :(
you can see pics here. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=624182

Probably showing my age here, but you need to go out and bless the truck or do something before you start your build.  That was one heck of a journey to get her home.

Have you seen this post on how to upload pic to forum (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6428.msg33933#msg33933) in the tech section.  The other way is to use photo bucket or similar site to upload pics using the "insert hyperlink" (bottom row, second button from left, looks like the world with a piece of paper).

Can't be Christine, I've already owned that truck and she is now the ash tray of a several Hondas somewhere.

Added some more pics here>>> http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=624182
I don't know how to adjust my camera to reduce the size of the pics and this site has far to strict limits on pic size.

I think the cruse control is going away. I never really liked cruse anyway.

I don't know how to adjust my camera to reduce the size of the pics and this site has far to strict limits on pic size.

There is a thread in the tech section on how to resize your pics, I use Faststone Image Viewer (http://www.fileparade.com/listing/123813/FastStone%20Image%20Viewer?did=10844&pid=1&ppd=search,33433880660,faststone%20image%20viewer,e,,c,0,,,&gclid=CNjl_ZDI1L0CFY17fgodIDsAeQ), it is easy and free and comes with a resizer.  I then just upload everything to my photo bucket account and use the "insert image" button above to move pics here.

Unless you just want some seriously large pictures the limits of the forum are not severely restrictive.

I don't really need huge pics. it's just that I don't have a photobucket account and I can't figure out how to reset my camera. lol I do know I can post these same pics here with no problem. >>>> http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=624182

You should give faststone a try, I was having problems posting pics because I use my I-pad to take pics and it is very restrictive, faststone is so easy to resize and I have never had a problem yet.

The rake of the cab to the bed seems off to me.  Could be several different things, but the cab and bed seem to slope in opposite directions to me, is it just the pic ?

Took the truck for a short drive yesterday. I discovered the radiator has a sever leak. It's at the radiator shop today, have to wait until tomorrow to find out if it can be repaired or if I'll need a new one. I also think I have the wrong TV cable. the transmission wont up-shift under throttle. I lengthened it as much as I could and it made it a little better, but I still need to back off to make it shift smoothly.

I like the hood also. Came with the truck when I bought it.
Plans include a 5" lowering all around, rebuilt 350 V8 with Vortec heads, mild cam and a duel plane manifold, Bright Yellow paint.

That ought to be real sweet when you get it all done , I think yellow will look awesome on this truck , and a 350 will power it like a mini rocket ship :-) you will be having fun that's for sure, what's the time frame on the build ? Just curious ....

Time frame? This is the last project my dad and I will probably ever do. He's 79 and I'm 56. I just hope we can get most of it done before he's gone. In any case, the build is dedicated to him.

While waiting for the radiator fix, I decided to pull the plugs and do a comp test. I wasn't running all that well anyway. 1-120, 2-142, 3-123, 4,130, 5-126, 6-130, 7-130, 8-135. There's a 22 pound spread, but considering it's a 37 year old motor I'm happy for now. Truck build will include a rebuilt motor anyway.
Plugs that were burning all looked fine, but 2 of them had no gap what so ever. That was probably most of the stumbling problem.

Can't decide if I should get the frame sand blasted and painted right away, or wait until I can actually afford to start the work on it.

If your plans don't include modifying the frame, then I would blast it and paint it right away.
Piece #1 will be done and ready for other parts.

If you are going to modify it then blast and paint it after it is mocked up.

Plans may, or may not, include a C-notch. I won't know until I get the axle swap done and take measurements. The front will stay basically the same. Only adding drop spindles and lowering springs. And of course, new bushings all around.

I think your idea for a front grill emblem would look very cool and different if done right.

Got final inspection this morning. Ya for me!!!
Then I discovered a new problem. The air horn on the Q-jet is warped. Secondaries will open, but then they get stuck open and flood the engine. I pulled it apart. There's a good 1/8" warp in it.
PO or someone he had working on the carb didn't know what they were doing.

I read your thread on the other forum. I hear you on all the aches and pains of advancing years due to injuries. I had my right shoulder x-rayed today and later this week I'll be getting my right elbow x-rayed also. I've had both shoulders dislocated, two severe concussions, heat stroke, two times had heat exhaustion, broke my neck as a kid, my ankle as a young adult, my left index finger as a kid, my upper spine had those knobby spinal protrusions sheared off a few years ago, but since I could still walk and breath I didn't go to the doctor, not a great idea but I only went to a doctor if I couldn't move the part suspected of being broke. It's all catching up since I've slowed down over the past few years. BTW, I'm 57.

Hang in there. Do what is possible but always attempt the impossible, because when you do what's improbable the grin that your faces sets in hurts and all the other pains are forgotten.   ;)

dang... A brother from another mother. lol I think I'll start calling you "Lucky" that's what my friends call me. lol
As it turns out the problem with the carb wasn't warping (although there is some) it was the plug at the end of the upper secondary butterfly shaft. It was in to tight and was binding the shaft. A drift punch and a wack from a hammer on the opposite end cured the problem.
The frame turned out to be a bust also. It was full of cracks and the shock mounts had been re-welded several times.
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I'm not ready to give up, I just get frustrated once in a while because there's things that the pain wont allow anymore.

Got ta keep on keepin on.  8)

I don't know much about Q-jets or Edlebrocks. I have four Q-jets sitting in my basement and a couple for parts but I never tried using them. Instead I bought a Truck Avenger but I haven't been happy with it either. I also have a couple 600's and one 650 Holley I think, I may not have them anymore, IDK.

I got the results of my shoulder x-ray; I have a bone spur in there. It's creating a major portion of the irritation. Nothing to do about it. Live with the pain. So far it hasn't caused any limited movement of my arm. I never made the elbow x-ray. Had to get the haying equipment in shape and I cut a few acres of hay to test it out. Have to bale Saturday (today I guess). It's supposed to rain Sunday.

So, Apparently there were more problems in the transmission then just a bound up governor. Took the truck up on the freeway and the trans went South on me.  Had to limp it home in first gear at 5 MPH.

The good thing about chevy transmissions is they are easy to replace. And the autos are actually easy to rebuild if you have the right tools. My personal preference is 4-speeds although in a 2WD truck there doesn't seem to be a need for a granny low.

It's not much, but every little bit helps when you're on a budget.

My dad and my friend Chris and I went to the wrecking yard today and got another transmission for my 77 C10. A 4L60 out of a 1990 GMC 3/4 ton van. I'm trying to figure out the code numbers (3BWM434211) I know the "3" is for 1993 and the "M" is for 4L60, but I'm not sure about the "BW" part.
I got it complete with a TV cable, torc converter, Dip stick and tube. But the best part was the sticker on the bell housing. It was a GM re-manufactured transmission.
$145.00

I'm a newbie at auto transmissions, will a metric tranny bolt up to an older 350 bellhousing directly or will a different bellhousing and input shaft be necessary?
Title: Re: My new build thread. 1977 C10 shotry
Post by: BADAZ chevy guy on June 16, 2014, 01:37:02 PM
The transmission has the same bolt pattern will bolt up just fine. Just don't try to put metric bolts in the old engine. lol
The input shaft may be a 27 or a 32 spline (depending on the year) So, you'll need the right tork converter. However, all the converters will all bold to the old flex plate.
You are going to need to do some mods on the transmission itself. Rewiring the internals, or adding a pressure switch externally,  for the lock-up. Proper adjustments for the TV cable. (Not the same as your Kick-down cable)
Look here >>> http://www.tvmadeez.com
And here >>> http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/53562/
Good luck.

Thanks BACG,  I was just wondering.
I spent an awful lot of time, energy and money getting rid of an automatic tranny so I'm not ready to go back to one. I believe I still have the auto steering column, the 454 flex plate and bell housing, but I dumped the tranny and t-case many years ago in favor of a sm465 and 205. I was going to hold onto the t-case so I could use it for the doubler but realized that mud trucks don't need (s)lower gearing. A twin stick on the 205 is enough.
