sun activated body filler, and my truck(read)
« on: July 08, 2002, 11:00:00 PM »
I made this topic to warn anyone who ever intends to do body work on their vehicles. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! It is supposed to be easier to use because you don't have to spend time adding hardener and mixing it, but is really more of a hassle.
I received two tins of it for christmas for my truck.
The first problem was getting it open. There was so much adhesive on the lid that I had to deform the tins to get at the bondo. I think this stuff was probably something that separated from the bondo and had risen to the top. The second problem is the top 1/2 inch of bondo is not useable, as it has dried slightly and cannot be worked. The worst part about this bondo is that it is so sticky that it cannot be worked around at all. The way you apply the first layer is how you have to leave it, or it just gets crappy and you have to re-do that section. Excess bondo is not easily removed befor it is completely cured either.

Being my first time using bondo ever, I just accepted this and assumed it was just the way bondo was, and must take a lot of getting used to.

Well, I bought a tin of real bondo a few days ago and just used it today. I almost went wild after I realized how much time I wasted with that sun activated crap. I would be done already and not only half way there.

Well anyway, I have been taking pictures along the way. The truck (1980 chevy) is my first vehicle and I have had it for about a year and a half now. I had to dump so much money into it that I decided to clean the body up a bit. Whoever did the body 6 years ago(according to the guy I bought it from) did a heck of a bad job. The doors are a nightmare, the whole bottom of the passenger side was rusting under the paint. I just plan to spray everything below the top moulding(it is a silverado) with spay paint. I primed the box yesterday and it looks better already. Once I am ready to do the final coats, I am going to clean the rims up by spraying them white(they already are, but with patches of rust), put 275 or 295 tires on the rear, and my duel exhaust, which is currently tipped down defore the axle put out the back sides with chrome tips. I initially planned to sell it, but I have been looking for a project car and decided I need a winter vehicle anyway if I ever do end up owning a nice car, so I figure I will make this one nice and keep it a while.

Pics to follow as soon as the project is done and my scanner is fixed.

For all the work and time you have in the 80 model you should come take my 84 home. The only rust repair would be welding in a couple of new rocker panels(I have the new ones for it already) I already put a door on the left side and rebuilt the hinges. Have another door for the passenger side too but really don't need it. You can drive this thing home for $1500 and sand it and paint it!!!! Sorry, I'm a lousy salesman!!!!!
Anyway, you're right about that bondo. It was a poor gimmick at best. Two-part is definately the way to go. Good luck with the project, Bill

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!! The first time I saw that crap in the store I laughed out loud and gave the guy behind the counter a whole ration of crap. He tried to tell me that was the new thing and I better get used to it as within a few years thats what everyone would be useing, Bull! That was four years ago, that was the first and last time I ever saw that garbage.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
