Title: Mystery Wire?
Post by: 76_Scottsdale on October 26, 2007, 01:33:43 PM
When I had my tranny out and I was cleaning up the back of the block, I noticed a single blueish/greenish wire with a single rubber covered female spade connector that comes out of the harness going behind the block. It is part of the stock harness so I thought it must be the oil pressure wire, but when I searched the forum here I found pics of a sending unit right next to the distributor and I don't have one like that. The wire looks like it is just the right length to connect somewhere on the block close to the distributor. I've never had problems with my oil pressure gauge before, so if this is the wire I must've accidently unhooked it. Does anyone know where this wire goes? My truck is a 76 K20 with a 350 and it has an oil pressure gauge, not a light. Thanks again.

Sounds like the heater blower connector. Got a pic?

Well no pic but it's not the blower wire.

What trans do you have? If you have a TH400 a similar connector goes to the detent solenoid. Was the truck ever equipped with a TH400?

No it was a SM465 but now it's a 700R4

Are you positive the truck never had a TH400? Otherwise post a pic. My oldest manual at this point is 1980 although most of the wires 73-80 were the same color code for the most part.

Is it the underhood lamp?

Yes I'm positive it never had a TH400. I have the factory price sheet listing a factory 4 speed. It doesn't have anything fancy like an underhood lamp. I don't see a sending unit so does this truck have a manual oil pressure gauge? If so I can rule that out because other than oil pressure I have no idea what it could be.

It's not for your back up lamps?

No I found those wires, they are bright green and dark green together in one plug that came off the tranny. This wire has really got me stumped. As far as I can tell it's not for any gauges but it looks stock. The wiring under my hood is all nice and neat from the PO so I can't imagine there was a wire hanging back there for no reason.

it's easy enough to see if you have a manual oil gauge. Just look up under the dash for a small oil-filled plastic tube.
If you have a Haynes Repair book you might find some info about the wire. There is a switch in the tranny that  somehow controls vacuum advance when the engine temp is low. It's the TCS (trans controlled spark) system. An emissions thing.

I don't have any emissions junk like that on this pickup. I looked in my Haynes and there's jack diddly about the wire.

A picture would really help.  If it is a 76, it has a mechanical oil pressure gauge.
The only green wire I can think that hasn't been mentioned is the Temp gauge.

it's really not green it's blue. I might call it teal but if anything it is blue. pic coming in a few minutes. I just have to crawl into my engine capartment  ;D

I will look on my GMC to see if I have that connector but your pix are really crappy and hard to tell where it is. PS this thread is screwed up big time. I can't see the posts when I'm logged in either

The grey thing in the bottom right corner is the back of the distributor. This is a shot down the back of the motor. The wire comes out of the harness in the pic and is basically in the middle of the back of the motor.
