Hey guys, ive been mosieing around here and after a while decided i should show off my project,
I just turned 18 and spend every dime i make on this truck, and have learned alot by myself just by doing work on it, like taking time with body work, building and 350, rebuilding a munci m20 and soon to have a ford 9" that i got for free and some other goodies, and this project keeps me in line which i think is pretty good
This is how i got the truck (didnt have a door though)
Rockers and cab corners were bad, so i replaced them, that was the hardest body work
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/100_3537.jpg)
then i built my first v8 by myself (i build racing dirtbike engines kinda as a side job)
Vortec heads were alot of work, i had access to a machine shop for a week so with help from my brother he taught me how to work a bridgeport
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/350/DSC04987.jpg)
to bad i couldnt get those other side bolt valvecovers to work, but heres the engine going in
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/100_4347.jpg)
Then after, i converted it to a standard, i had used a saganaw 4 speed out of an 80's camaro, found out the hard way how weak they are, so i picked up a blown up munci m20 and did a full rebuild on it
heres the saginaw
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/DSC05302.jpg)
then the muncie in rebuild
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/stuff011.jpg)
while i was doing the tranny i had some tax returns and i got DJM spindles and spirings to make it 5" drop in the front, then a flip kit in the rear to make it 5 in the rear
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/stuff009.jpg)
while i did that i had the bed off and painted the frame and whatnot, but since my truck is a long bed and is a standard, and the miuncie is 6 inches shorter then the origional th350, i had to use a 2 piece driveshaft, and when loweing it, i had to make a custom bearing support
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/stuff031.jpg)
stock
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/DSC05259.jpg)
after
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/valve005.jpg)
i dont have any of it with the bed on and the rear lowered :-\ but i will get some soon enough
but heres a little burn out video when i had open headers and was breaking in the new tranny and testing the lowerdness
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/th_valve009.jpg) (http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i256/Steve524/Dans%20Truck/?action=view¤t=valve009.flv)

Looking good man! I spent every penny I made on my 80 C10 when I was 18 too. I learned so much working on that truck. These trucks are the coolest! ;D
-
Good job. That's how I learned most of my stuff - learn as you go - don't be affraid to teach yourself!
-
Engine sounds great! Sweet burn out vid! Looks good low.
-
thanks guys
oh yeah and i forgot to mention im building another short block for it with 10.2:1 forged pistons and forged i beam rods, because i smoked a piston in this engine when my thermostat and temp gauge went on me in the same day and overheated my engine and locked it up >:(, so i will have that in another forum as soon as the block is bored
-
great work man! you are learning the right way, by good ol fashioned experience. truck is lookin good!
-
Nice work. What mufflers are you gonna run?
-
it has 2 flowmaster 40's 2 1/2 inch, i think come new engine im getting rid of my hooker headers because they hang too low, my buddy has some headmans that are about 3 inches higher, and im genna do an x pipe, and 3" turn downs in front of the rear wheels exiting at a 45 degree angle, who knows my plan changes by the day
-
Nice work!
-
Sweet truck, bro! It looks awesome low like that...where did you get the flip kit stuff from? Lookin into doing that on mine:
-
i got all my stuff from styling concepts, but clal them to get a free shipping code or else dont get it from there, they wanted $120 to ship the stuff to my house, i was like "your nuts" so i called them and got a free shipping code
-
We can get suspension kits now, just shoot me a PM or email of what you want.
-
awsome i had a bad experiance with a tire laying in the highway in my lane and couldnt move out of the way (car to the left and gaurd rail to the right) and i wrecked my lower control arm :-[ so i will be needing new lower control arms in a few months when i get my new engine done,
speaking of which i got some new pistons in ;D
forged 10.2:1 comp on my 64cc vortecs ;D
-
progress on new engine:
got my pistons and rods hung, rods are scat i-beams, along with getting my 92 roller block .030 new cam bearings, line honed, hot tanked, new freeze plugs, and painted
stayed up late one night to finish up the instalation of pistons and rods, but its all done now, just waiting for $600 to do the cam and lifters
-
Lookin good! Where did you say u were again in CT?
-
I'll be having to do that soon, lol. But it's looking nice and clean!
-
Lookin good! Where did you say u were again in CT?
middletown, about 15 minutes south of hartford
yeah its coming together very clean,
although i had a fever last night and had a nightmere that someone uncovered it and was anglegrinding a rusty piece of steel next to it, then decided to turn it over, and it messed the bore up ??? :-X so that wasnt great haha
-

I hate it when that happens, lol. I use to have nightmares about my brother going out and deciding to take my truck for a test run while I still had major tune ups to do still and blow up my engine. So I ended up taking the keys out of it and storing them.
But if he really do that I'd have to break his legs. ;)
-
does anybody know where i can pick up a hydro clutch assembly along with the peddle assembly? bell housing etc? that or a conversion for my peddle assembly? this z bar isnt working out for me
-
How about a mid 80's f-body lakewood bellhousing. It'll help keep your feet on. You seem like a smart guy, cool project BTW, I'm sure you could figure out how to hook up a cylinder to your existing clutch pedal.
-
the problem lies in my pedle i think, it sticks to the floor at high rpm's (anything above 4000) and if i unhook the z bar it will stick to the floor when pushed in, so i think im genna find another pedle assembly
-
Nice job Dan. A fine example of turning a homely 2wd truck into a personalized hot rod.
I live in E Hampton if you need any odds and ends give me shout, PM or email. 8)
-
where should i start the list:
hahaha
yeah its getting the 355 over feb break, and then the 9" gets built, then bags and paint, then rims
then done
then im genna buy an ls1
-
Looks good. Your nieghbors must love you!
-
love is an understatement ;D
-
been a while but heres the heads up:
got alot done on the 355:
got the Speed pro forged pistons with coated skirts, 10.2:1 on 64cc heads
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/355/50002.jpg)
I decided that i wasnt going to use any used parts on this engine other then the crank (cuz its mint)
so i got scat i beams,
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/355/scat001.jpg)
put the crank in this time without problems unlike last time when advaced auto sucked and gave me the wrong bearings
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/355/engine2003.jpg)
bored and honed Via Accurate machining, the guy does a good job, but charged a fortune, even if you pay in cash
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/355/engine2005.jpg)
got all the pistons in and the rotating assembly is ready to go, just waiting to pull out the other engine so i can swap heads and other goodies
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/DanCRF250/355/engine2015.jpg)
And i got it into the truck today and started it, i ordered a mallory ignition (the 3rli) and it didnt work it kept backfiring so i put the stock distributor in, ill get pics up when i get my brothers camera
-
good looking motor. ;D
-
Looks good the dan!
-
Accurate machine wacked me too, but did a great job. I also used those pistons, I like em.
Looks great, keep up the good work.
-
took it for a drive and broke it in the past few days, about 400 miles on it, still keeping it under 4k, but dang it spins 2nd at 65 with no problem, and it has crappy 2:73 10-blt which is about to explode, im starting to work on the ford 9"
-
thats cool man, keep up the good work!
-
it has crappy 2:73 10-blt which is about to explode
lol, been there done that. :P
-
Been a long time but im renting a shop and dealing with freshman year at college so heres the update
I am renting a shop and practically living there
(http://i34.tinypic.com/30if4h4.jpg)
those are 20" steel wheels, im not going for a ghetto type of bag and body drop, its going to be more a hi perf. street truck that happens to lay ground and settle nicely in the grass :)
i welded on supports that held the frame from moving after cutting so that i can make a good template for my new frame and have the front portion not move from being 100% level
(http://i41.tinypic.com/2wozznd.jpg)
cut the frame 62" from the front leaving this left, it will eventually get scrapped but for now its my template for all the body mounts and levels
(http://i39.tinypic.com/216atz.jpg)
this is whats left, i got the 9" down there for the c-notch and 4 link set up
i ordered my tubing yesterday for cost, 3x3x3/16, 48', thought that would be enough
each angle is double cut from each piece, ensuring line up, and making it not only stronger, but they match perfectly with no overhang
(http://i42.tinypic.com/3509zqc.jpg)
clean air bag system
(http://i39.tinypic.com/2vj3nm9.jpg)
third member for the 9"
and then
"](http://i41.tinypic.com/2ue6v6x.jpg)
frame mocked everything cut including the 12 inch c-notch
(http://i41.tinypic.com/1z1tgkz.jpg)
flux core wire with 75%ar 25%ox, reverse polarized the welder, it lays ugly, but it is stronger than solid wire close to x2, by the way flux is $8.90 a pound, 90 bucks for a roll
(http://i40.tinypic.com/vg7v3r.jpg)
Aluminum square tubing can be used for a streight blade, it is the strieghtest metal you can buy (tip from John Rankle)
all the pieces are beveled at the end to get a penitrative bead, as even a good welder on 1/4 setting only penetrates near a 1/16 to 1/8th inch
3 hours of welding smashing it from warping, and aligning it, and i got one side
(http://i39.tinypic.com/2isbknk.jpg)
thats where i am at as of tonight
-
wow man that truck is gonna be awsome when its done what else do you have in store for your truck? bigger motor? what color will it be? i saw a red cb in the back ground are you useing that one instead? if so what was wrong with the one you had on the truck it looked good from the pics an way keep up the good work and keep us posted with pics i will follow your build closely later 8)
-
Awesome work! That's gotta be tough doing all that work and college. Great job.
-
Thats some great work! I know its hard going to college and scraping up enough money to work on your truck but you will get it done. Keep up the work and keep us posted on your progress.
-
thanks guys, both the step sides in your avtars are sick
the motor is a fresh 355 i redid it about 3000 miles ago, its getting a agressive custom grind cam roller lifters etc, im doing up some equal length headers (alot of thought came from one of the guys on here) to put the pipes right were i need them to be, along with machining the vortec heads to 2.02, and longer valves.
luckly my boss is a hot rodder and i work at a fabrication shop and today he pulled me aside and asked how my truck is coming and told me the laser and all the metal that isnt in a rack is available to me as long as i tell him what i took and for what use so i can keep him updated on my project (score!) so i am going to be making a ss fuel cell and some trick gussets and whatnot.
should have alot of the frame done tomorrow im working a double today to cover my 3rd member i just bought.
-
great job! why are you rebuilding the frame?
-
he he he no what ya mean bout flux coated wire. built a pulling tractor with a 750 honda inline 4 motorcycle engine and a dadsun rearend. when i was building the frame my helmet looked just like that lol
-
wow thats awsome that your boss will let you have the extra metal and use the lazer wish i could get that lucky with building my truck keep up the good work and keep us posted o and how come your rebuiliding the frame instead of just putin a cnotch in just wondering 8)
-
Is your boss hiring :)
-
Nice job, lots of cool work. Better stay in good with the boss. Lol.
-
its the best job i have ever had, granted he runs our as*es and doesnt take any excuses and every day you leave looking like you came out of a coal mine, and not too high of pay, but ill come in on a saturday and help clean the shop no pay or stay late one night to finish a job. he is very appreciative. He sees i am just picking up the trade to use it to my advantage, and is leanient about school because he wants me in college, but the knowledge to be had from working with a 65 year old who started everything when he was 20 is unlimited, you learn how to work with metal the right way and get so many new skills, i dont really mind working for nothing just as long as i keep learning new stuff.
at that im redoing the frame completely because making the frame which is more or less 6" in hight, with 3x3" box, you can do a 3 inch body drop without channeling the body, and since i converted my truck to a 4speed muncie and will keep it that way, channeling gets in the way of my clutch pedal. 3 inches clears your front a-arms and crossmember, so that is why i did it. let alone its pretty BA to make your own frame, and its much cleaner than having unwanted brackets and holes in the frame
-
Great looking ride. Gonna be a great project. I'll be checking this one out.
-
thats a good point. great job on it. keep us updated.
-
Nice work. If I had half the ambition and drive you've got, I'd have pretty nice truck by now.
-
Nice work. If I had half the ambition and drive you've got, I'd have pretty nice truck by now.
i never had the drive before i got the shop, i dont know how some guys do it, like one guy on here who did his hole truck outside not even covered. i know i did engine swaps and trannys in the snow but not bags
anywho here is the 3 hours i got today:
got the bender up
(http://i41.tinypic.com/2rnajw3.jpg)
and the frame almost done (crossmembers)
c-notch its so big but everything came out to perfect specs.
like my brother said about the cage in his truck, the worst weld is always the one you see the most, the two on the top of the notch look like i did it with my eyes closed (flux in a way made it seem that way) but the rest came out mint
(http://i43.tinypic.com/2mwyoah.jpg)
headers are too low that means =lengths are a plan, i watched "king of the hammers" tonight which is a rock crawling race threw the desert and got a few invisions of my headers
(http://i42.tinypic.com/ur3ac.jpg)
as for the question about my cab previously mentioned, nothing is wrong, my brothers k30 is back there and hes making that into a rock crawler, 350 done up, 465/203/205 doubler with a 14ff and d60 up front, full ARB and 4 link rear soon, hes making the tranny crossmembers now (thats why the bender was put up tonight)
here are a few pics of that
(http://i40.tinypic.com/qnry9j.jpg)
oh yeah and i picked up a 454 on saturday, its a marine mercruiser, 420hp forged low, 30 over, hi-per gm heads, gm alum intake, 850cfm holly and roller rockers for $500 bucks... but thats going in my next project (rat rod)
should work on it saturday night so ill update sometime sunday on my progress
-
nice score on the motor and the frame is looking awsome, your brothers rock crawler will look killer to keep up the good work 8)
-
any progress on the truck keep us posted 8)
-
got my third member in last week
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2ptcb50.jpg)
made some frame gussets
(http://i44.tinypic.com/2iqfwh2.jpg)
welded the gussets in, i decided to punch a 7/8 hole on each side so i could fill it with weld insuring optimum strength
(http://i41.tinypic.com/30bpi0o.jpg)
i started plating where i attached the frame, i cut it down to size in a triangle, then boxed it and double plated it, since its the most stressed part and the box frame is half the hight, probably holding 3/4 of the origional lateral force
(http://i41.tinypic.com/wladr5.jpg)
i made a crossmember that sits right in front of the rear bed mounts, its also going to be part of my trailer hitch (yes it will haul a boat)
frame is finished other than the body mounts which i got them all made up, and the front two are on just i didnt get pictures, i need to invest into a digital camera some day:
it took 22 tons to punch tha 2" hole at work, heck of a dang bang
(http://i41.tinypic.com/bh0toy.jpg)
-
Awesome work Dan. Is your shop in Middletown too?
-
just west, its in durham, its a decent place but this week has been hectic, the guy next door who has a porshe gt3 and a criscraft's bay got flooded, so we got water under our wall, luckily didnt wreck anything but rust some steel
-
wow dan its sur is looking God, thats awsomr that it still gonna haul a boat with it :D keep up the good work ad keep us posted 8)
-
awesome project, keep the progress pics coming
-
mocked the body up (http://i42.tinypic.com/21b9huf.jpg)
tacked the body mounts to make sure everything fit properly
(http://i44.tinypic.com/2a5jamh.jpg)
i even dragged the girlfriend down
(http://i42.tinypic.com/33atouc.jpg)
-
man, thats great stuff.
This is the coolest thread on here that I found so far. I hope my kids turn out as smart as you about trucks.
-
Killer build dude!!! AWESOME!!! :o :o :o
-
thanks guys, in reality ive never done this before, nor do i really know what im doing, im kinda just making sense out of stuff and taking thousands of measurements, and asking the right people some questions. its the most fun i have ever had other than racing motocross.
as for my motivation, my father (engineer) came down to my shop thursday and told me "how do you know that goes there?" "i cant believe youve done this, its too much your in over your head.. kinda put that inmy head as motivation to show people that some kids out there can do this stuff, and there are still hot rodders out there in my generation, though very few, my next project is a 34 tudor, just gotta find one
(http://photos.webridestv.com/datastore/images/user/ae53d69ce7292bcb5093f42caf4343bc/Ford_Rat_Rods_52210_20080405_l.jpg)
-
oh yea, and i got an idea about my steering, looks like my moms 69 camaro sterring box is very similar to mine, just the mounts are backwards, but is 2 turns lock to lock, where as mine is,
also looking into doing sway bars front and rear, i can mod a stock front, but i need to find one that will fit my rear
-
Love the Ratrods!! My favorite color is "Rust". ;)
-
for some reason i got ambitious tonight and cleaned all the brackets and ground down the whole 9"
i sat there with a 7" angle grinder for 3 hours
pj yeah i bought a digi today ;D
(http://i41.tinypic.com/21e9uug.jpg)
then planned to cut the tunnel out of the cab
(http://i41.tinypic.com/214pmip.jpg)
thats about it but heres the eye candy
(http://i40.tinypic.com/68ube1.jpg)
-
looking real good man, your truck is gonna be bad *** when done, do you have an idea for color or any thing when done? deff keep us posted on your progress, my truck is still sitten in the garage i havent been able to work on it because of being laid off for the winter, and also the garage dosent have heat, so im very jelous that you can work on yours, :P but as soon as warm weather comes ill be back at work, and ill have more pics of my progress and hopefully by august ill be driven my stepside again, thats my plan, kepp up the good work 8)
-
awesomeness. keep the pics comin. theyre great.
Pete 8)
-
Got in a little battle with my truck today, i was too fed up to take pics, but i cut the floor out for the tranny and bell housing, guess i didnt do it enought and my engine hoise got angry and the strap i was using slid causing my motor to go almost streigth up and down
oil everywhere,
but anywho we will start over tomorrow or thursday
but i did get my roller lifter set in today :)
brand new delphi lifters with the OEM spider which i may re-make out of stainless rod, and the guides etc for the cam
(http://i39.tinypic.com/2quhz6b.jpg)
-
Small world. I have seen you at rocky hill and spoke with you before. I'm Gary and have the black 87 short bed truck. Your truck looks great, that frame is wicked! I've got some body work to do to mine this spring. Just bought a new clean rust free bed for it and am in the process of trying to find rust free fenders and doors.
Anyways, your project looks wicked! Keep up the good work! You still riding?
-
I see you have a bottle of Bone Suck Sauce. I heard that stuff is good. Is the 'hot' version too hot? or just right?
-
just perfect :P and so delicious
haha gary yeah i didnt forget you i got a proposition if u want lowering stuff
-
hey dan do you have a web site i could go on to find a muncie m20 that needs rebuilt? do you have any buddys willing to sell one? what gears are you running in you rear end? are the gonna get you off the line quick, and are they good for cruising as well? thanks ive decided to try and find a m20 that needs rebuilt since i bet it be a little bit cheaper to buy, then rebuild it this summer any info you can give me would be awsome thanks and keep us posted on all of what your doing 8)
-
just perfect :P and so delicious
haha gary yeah i didnt forget you i got a proposition if u want lowering stuff
Haha what's the proposition? PM me if you want.
-
got a set of nasty buckets out of a wrecked 3000GT
(http://i42.tinypic.com/oqjgnc.jpg)
measured out some tranny tunnels
(http://i39.tinypic.com/hwmhr6.jpg)
and then cut and mocked the engine up
(http://i43.tinypic.com/dr6mj9.jpg)
made a cross member for the bearing support
(http://i40.tinypic.com/34ovp7k.jpg)
and this is where im at, i cleaned the bagesus out of the shop this weekend
(http://i39.tinypic.com/2efufpt.jpg)
-
wow dan this thing is looking awsome, keep up the awsome work, and keep us posted 8)
-
I agreee looks sweet ;D
-
tomorrow i should have a template idea for the tunnel, and wednesday i should be rolling/ bending one up at work, i need to get some measurements for a fuel cell soon while work is slow my boss is genna tig me up a SS one
im making a set of lower control arms, i still have to find someone who sells poly bushings, i may just get a misc. set online and get DOM to fit it, not too sure on that yet
Tires are a must have soon, i want some decent low profile, i gotta do research on that, and make my disc break brackets and get the rear end done, called the guys on my four link they said it should be in next week, im pretty psyched that i got a company who doesnt just use "air bag it" 's parts and sell them under a different name, and they make it to my specs ;D
-
wow i cant wait to see it all done man this truck is looking awosme, i wish i could be working on my stepper right now keep up the good work 8)
-
any progress on the truck? i saw your post on another thread that you were gonna think bout making your truck a steppside, i think you should, it would look so cool with what you are building just my 2 cents 8)
-
finished the transmission tunnel in the past 2 weeks, it took forever
(http://i40.tinypic.com/sc9jdf.jpg)
got the 4 link in
(http://i43.tinypic.com/2rcuyxe.jpg)
and they gave me 2 of the same side link mounts >:(
(http://i41.tinypic.com/qskvog.jpg)
and clearly didnt read my specs on the 9"
so i called them had a little venting and they sent me new ones for free, should be in later this week
i should have just made them.. o well
so today i boxed the frame past the front crossmember, since i figured out when i jumped on my new frame secion, it would bounce, and all the play was coming from up front.
simple solution
with 5 hours of fab today i started losing motivation, so i had to see what i was going to finish with.. and i somehow got my motivation back :)

Loving the truck project, but gotta ask, is that your Mark 2 in the background??? I'm building a Mark 2 VR6 atm.... engine in, waiting for paint.

thanks i can find the 3 ton easy but where did you get the 6 tons

wow man that thing is lookin awsome, sucks you have to wait longer to put the 4 link in, but it will be worth the wait keep up the good work 8)

man thats lookn good bet its gonna bad when done

Today was a productive day
I found out what ridehight i would like, and finally got to play with the four-link
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2a5anax.jpg)
as of now its just tacked in place, i measured 1002039 times ??? ???, but will go back in the morning and measure it again before i cant fix it anymore

its getting closer....

Really likin this project... What are those wheels from?? I'm a big steelie fan... ;D

Really likin this project... What are those wheels from?? I'm a big steelie fan... ;D
I dont think im allowed to give out such valuble information :D you cant even buy them, you have to find each one seperately, new they are 743 a pop ???
tonight i welded all the fourlink, and set up my driveshaft, everythings coming so smoothe im just awaiting a wall to hit
-
man thats gonna be one nice low ride. looks good.
-
Just wanna add a little in here because on a different site i got some "minitruck" feed back
This is not going to be your average bagged truck, im in no way, shape ,or form the 19year old minitruck kid that wants his truck bagged for the sake of it.
In reality the two reasons why im bagging it are i want it to have the best stance achievable adjustable and all,
Ride quality+ towing my boat.. my rear springs drooped alot when i towed my boat around, and my truck had a TON of body roll when i would hit some back roads
My goal is almost opposit of minitruckers.
my plan is to hide EVERYTHING, Tanks, compressors, tubework, wires
Ive been told my style is relitively "old school" from a 60 year old hot rodder,
I hate seeing wires, so the MSD will be in the glovebox, fuel line will be braught up from the back of the engine, plug wires will be on the inside of the headers, lights and signal wires will be fed threw the fenders
rad overflows, windsheild squirter will be hidden in the fenders, im lowmounting the altanator (sp?) where my fuel pump was, along with making lower brackets for the powersteering
Battery, air compressor, and tanks will be underneath my bed floor and will be acessable via trap door
I am making my bed versitle(yes) by covering all my notch etc. and the covered notch will second as a Bike stand for my two dirtbikes
Im not gangster and dont want my truck that way,
8)
-
wow man that is deff different from a mini trucker lol but its cool cuz i dont like seeing the air compresors or a hole in the bed floor or a lot of wires just hanging out and looking like a spider web under the hood, it will look cool when your done, you have any more pics? thanks 8)
-
No explanation needed here. I think the build is really cool!
-

ill get some if i make it down tomorrow, i finished welding the link in, got the most perfect beads ive ever welded on the axle tabs, i still have to figure out rear bag mounts. probably keep it clean and do it right behind the 4-link tabs

SRT8
-
SRT8
Close... ::)
-
the secret is out!
yeah they weren't to easy to find, since they are the spare rim for a dodge 1500 pickup with 20's or any srt with 5.5 on 5 lug
-
Today was a sad sad day, As i was making templates for the bag mounts, i found i have only 2 places to put them, both of which they wont do their job right...
on a better note im upgrade to some new tube work! ;D 8)
im removing the top link bar and turning it into a triangulated link, then mounting the bags 3/4 the way up on the bottom link, and bending a truss link to weld on underneith that, and probably genna make some of these dimple dyes i purchased last year with my brother 8) im actually pretty psyched about doing some tubework.. i think a roll cage is going to happen ;D
-
Anyone delt with a Watts link? im reading and planning on building my own
-
They seem like the obvious way to go for anything bagged. Shouldn't be too hard for you.
Keep in mind all your mounting options. I've seen them mounted on top of and beneath the axle with center pivot mounted to the axle housing, obviously the center pivot mounted to the axle housing in the back (especially on Ford 9" housings), and center pivot mounted to a frame crossmember behind the axle. There is also a modified watts linkage that looks like a funky dual panhard bar, but works using the same in principle as the Watt's. I'll try and find a pic.
-
i cant post anymore? ive tryed uploading my progress probably 3 times now and it keeps getting an error
-
try this one more time, in smaller doces
got a Supermax miller a few weeks ago
(http://i39.tinypic.com/6hkg0y.jpg)
-
i got my motor mounts in, took forever, it lowered my engine a heck of a lot, like 2 inches, its awsome
(http://i44.tinypic.com/29gbnz9.jpg)
then i made my tranny crossmember tonight
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2cyo5cx.jpg)
-
Finished the crossmember and tabs
(http://i44.tinypic.com/dvhht5.jpg)
then mounted it and welded it, came out pretty good, i can still fit 3" exhaust, though ill probably be running 2-1/2, and then come flowmaster race mufflers, but thats on the last of things to do
(http://i42.tinypic.com/m8ka5y.jpg)
got the DOM for my link, it was expensive, and the screwed me out of 3' in my length, i was agrivated
-
wow lookin real good man cant wait to see more on this build 8)
-
That crossmember looks awesome. Nice welds too!
-
Are you running it solid mounted?
-
Are you running it solid mounted?
Did you notice the bushings on either end of the crossmember?
-
Everything is poly mounted, other than the front two cab mounts, but its getting a cage eventuallly anyways
update*
3 f*g hours today with a 8" angle grinder, FML
(http://i42.tinypic.com/11kz2o3.jpg)
got all my 4 link stuff off
New Addition to the shop, a 500+ hp v6 s10, fixing the LS1 throttle body, which still doesnt work because EFI blows
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2cq0byh.jpg)
so today i was grinding for a total of 5 hours
(http://i43.tinypic.com/33ayxdv.jpg)
and smoothed my whole underside
(http://i42.tinypic.com/1jrw2w.jpg)
-
PLEASE reduce those image sizes.
-
Maybe I'm just tired, but have you gotten the new 4 link on yet? I'm embarking on my fourth bagged truck and the bag on bar is the only way to go. You can probably run a 37" bar on that longbed setup, with the Slam Specialties RE7 bag you'll get more than enough lift to haul your boat and it'll ride like a caddy.
-
hahaha, thats funny, my 4 link design has 36" bars so far, im still working on what im going to do with the center top bar, but we will figure it out, ive been really busy with school so not much to update other than the body is ready to go to the media blaster
-
I watch this thread, but dont post in it much. man, its coming along nicely.
way to go.
-
i just found this thread and read it all the way through, looks great dude excellent job.nice to see another friendly connecticut face.
-
3 weeks, a fourlink calculator, overstressed with what life served me lately, and now out of a bad month, i finally got somewhere
The fourlink design is set in stone and final, should be exactly what i need. Got 5 hours at my work alone to make parts, so i started to make all my hangers etc..
the only problem is i wasnt able to use the laser for them, and the hardest ones are the axle mount ones.
P.s the big hangers arnt finished, i still have some trussing to do
Ill have more done by the weekend, hopefully have it all linked and start on the Watts panhard
-
So i messed one of the brackets pieces up when i was cutting it, so i spent another hour making new ones today, but it was all worth it, i have One-Off 4-link hangers ;D
(http://i44.tinypic.com/10zu4gj.jpg)
im getting better with the welder day by day
(http://i44.tinypic.com/30l1aw3.jpg)
Coolest part:
fits my snap-on 7/8ths for the nut
made some axle tabs too ;D
(http://i39.tinypic.com/4gt6ow.jpg)
-
Awesome job Dan!
-
Very tasty! Nice welds man.
-
thanks guys, i realized that i only ordered 6 poly ends last night, and im ready to cut the DOM and make the links so i need 2 more, thank God for fed ex 2day
-
Really nice work. You should have made templates of all the parts with your skills you could make some up and resale them. Make you a buck off them.
-
haha, i had templates for everything. problem is, when making a 4-link it is all vehicle specific, weight, center of gravity, roll center, ride hight, all have to be taken into account.. but my brother and i just picked up a job to make a pre-runner fully caged out of a 2009 chevy 1500, so that will be fun
-
pictures up saturday hopefully, but i got the fourlink mocked up tonight, and i dont remember what else i did, but heck, cutting 1/4 wall DOM is not easy, i made one cut with a grinding chop saw (as apposed to a band saw that i used at work for the rest) took about 6 minutes to cut threw.., let alone notching everything took a few hole saws, but JD^2 notchers are amazing, im deffinitely happy i opt'd for a good one
-
links are done
(http://i42.tinypic.com/wbezgi.jpg)
did about 3 hours of remeasuring, welding, and bolting it all together, now im just making sure my axle is generally perpendcular to my frame, i got it within an 1/8th of an inch, so i hope it doesnt crab walk too much when i first get it out
-
4-link is done, now its bag mounts and watts link:
1/4 wall 1-1/2 DOM, i think it will handle it, im also bracing the lowers when the bags are mounted
-
(http://i44.tinypic.com/28vrrxe.jpg)
tonight i have realized im sick of fabricating
not good
but anyways, that top piece is just like a cover so you cant see the air lines, thats why its thin
-
Stay with it!! It's coming along great. Think about the outcome and driving it again.
-
that looks nice man deff dont quit or give up and just throw it together keep with it man it will be worth it in the end, its killin me cuz i havent worked in mine in like 5 months cuz of being layd off i just got a new job so when i start maken some money agin im back on my stepside hard core keep us posted man 8)
-
Dan, Neat! Are you going to install any crossmembers in your new frame section (I think you should). Where are you going to mount the pivot for the Watt's, on the housing or to the frame? Are you going to use a two piece driveshaft? Lorne
-
the watts will be on the frame, the 9" back doesnt seem strong enough to me, so i mine as well do it frame wise,
yes its a 2 piece driveshaft i will be using, i shortend it before, and i may have to go a little more, but it should be good
As for cross members, yes, i am i am taking the one for the center driveshaft bearing out, and making a beafy X style cross member, i will also have on on the top of my notch, but thats the last one, i have to get wheels and tires and the air bags pumpin before i go there. plus i have to make my fuel cell after the watts link... so much to do, it seams like there isnt untill i think about it.
I think my boss is getting me motivated, the car show i wanted to have it done by (yeah what a long shot that was) is wednesday, and hes letting me take his 33' Hot Rod down there ;D, so that should make me get up and work when i leave the car show
-
dont give up dude its awesome what your doing.
-
Any updates? The fabrication of those bag mounts is stout...very trick and sweet.
-
Wow, that's awesome modified!
Great job, take your time. I would like to see more new pics of your Truck.
-
way over my head, but great build, keep us posted with the progress.
-
(http://i29.tinypic.com/n6svly.jpg)
probably biting more than i can chew, but im not spending 1300 on A arms for the C10, f** that, and im making them to my specifications
so here we have a jig
(http://i31.tinypic.com/258zclj.jpg)
i have to make a mate to this one that will do the oposing side,
then i have to make two for the bottom
but heres what i got worked up for the watts (ordering DOM and designing the mounts but this is my specs- 13" eye to eye links, and 6 inch eye to eye on the watt itself:
http://redirectingat.com/?id=593X1004&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftinypic.com%2Fr%2Fsawa3q%2F3
but it works and thats what matters
-
Are you sure that jig will get your ball joint in the exact location you want it. Having it register on the tip of the ball joint stud might not get it there. If it were me, weld a plate to the jig that bolts to the control arm exactly how the ball joint bolts to it. That should ensure the proper ball joint location.
-
not sure which you mean, so ill explain both
the ball joint is actually screwed into a nut that i welded on top of that piece of 1x1. there is a washer welded on to the back of the nut so it can not thread in any furhter
second the top can not be stationary due to i need it to be repositioned, hence me making A-arms, once i get my plates lazered i will put some pics up on why the top cant be held in place
-
Oh, I was thinking in terms of simply reproducing a factory a-arm in tubular steel. My brain fart, I guess. My way wouldn't make much sense if you intend to change the mounting angle of the ball joint.
-
haha yes sadly the ball joints max out when i hit the air ride
-
so i have ballin rear brakes:
finally got some rotors and the calipers are wrong, they gave me ones for 1 inch front rotors on a chevy instead of the 1 1/4 i have, so napas in action tomorrow, then started working on all the other jigs till i ran out of bolts and nuts, night time work is so much better in ct, its 68 degrees out, tomorrows going to be 92, so boats not trucks lol
-
WoW, just read it all from start to finish, impressive to say the very least.
Question, when it was 5/5 drop (Before you went air) was it sitting level?
-
the rear was maybe an inch higher then the front
(http://i29.tinypic.com/14m6yb9.jpg)
-
TY, I just bought a 81 Blazer and want the front back to springs
(It's bagged up front) & the rear is a 5" flip kit + it's c-notched.
-
What type of kit did you use for the rear bakes? Thanks
-
a build your own kit.. haha, ford 9" is much different than a GM axle but those are front rotors off a 98 dodge ram, and C10 front brakes for the 1-1/4 front rotors, im building my own caliper brackets
-
so today i came up with an awesome idea.
What the heck am i going to use my other 4-link for? im going to make my A-arms out of it :) atleast my tops
so i turned down the shafts tonight to fit 9/16
(http://i26.tinypic.com/ri58qs.jpg)
Poly mount + DOM
(http://i29.tinypic.com/im6lmv.jpg)
have to turn down both sides, and even bring the shaft longer to accept the width of the 2.5 inch poly mount.. i will thread the ends when im done with it all
(http://i32.tinypic.com/2vkgoso.jpg)
i guess i didnt hit the resize button, sorry ill make them small next time
-
So im ditching the muncie, i got a new idea
(http://i25.tinypic.com/bg6ywx.jpg)
t56, 6 speed, $150
blown but im going to rebuild it
-
Awesome! I gotta check this thing out in real life soon.
-
I stalk this thread and never post much. jut wanted to say its coming along nicely. the best thread for me to read.
thanks.
-
haha thanks, ran into a wall today, i need a 1-1/4 die for my tubing bender, that sets a-arm work back a week, and i cant build my rear any more because now i need different gear ratios
-
(http://i33.tinypic.com/2qk16xy.jpg)
Got some stuff, sent some stuff back.. you know how it works
Motive gears 4:11's for the rear, purchased a mag base some indicators, and tooling for the lathe/bridgeport
got my tubing die, as you can see started playing with the a-arms
Also started tearing into the t56. Not a fun transmission to work on let me tell you..
And as always school is killing my truck work time, tonight was the first night i got work done in 3 weeks
-
Dude. You have a sick truck. 8) Your doing an awsome job keep up the good work. ;D Bummer about school taking up your time on the truck, but it will be worth it in the end. ??? ;)
-
yeah keep the drive alive. You made more progress than others would make in years.
-
Finaly got some time to draw up some parts to get lasered, lower link mounts i remade out of 1/4 instead of 3/16 like i had, just to be on the safe side.. Made some brake caliper brackets for my rear disc conversion, and also got the ball joint brackets lasered as well hopefully the upper A-arms will be done this weekend
(http://i37.tinypic.com/u3b15.jpg)
-
Oh, and the Watts link-links finally got tigged, so thats also on the list of things to do
-
Awesome job the dan. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
Go dan, put up some more pics and a status update. cant wait@!
-
So we have to move out of this shop, which sucks, because moving a project from one place to another isnt fun at all, let alone the rest of the stuff i have in there, butttt, it gives me motivation to get things rolling :)
cross drilled brake rotors , new bearings obviously cleaned up the spindles etc..
rears all set now, got the timken set20 breaing/seal set. we will see how those work out, its a pretty rediculous bearing set up. $40 a bearing >:(, fitted the lasered brackets and kept it simple with c10 front calipers
(http://i36.tinypic.com/145nw9.jpg)
and of coarse the poser shot, i like the 20's more and more every time i do something new to the truck and have to add them to the picture
As for some new updates, i flew out to Sema last week, and had me thinking of drafting a 69c10 dash into my truck, kinda switch it up a little
-
wow that sucks you have to move, how come tho, building sold or something? but the truck is looking good and coming along nicely post more pics and new ones of the new buliding/garage your moving to. 8)
-
The other shop will have 3 phase and an air conditioned office, is closer to home and is in between home and work, which is perfect, plus the place im with now doesnt let you keep a car outside overnight and the new place has windows!
tonight after a 12 hour grueling school day i made it to the shop and got the front end ready for the upper A-arms, rear bags and it will be a roller!
I finish welded the whole 4-link
(http://i34.tinypic.com/2s7wdxc.jpg)
and got the other lower control arm and spindle mocked up
(http://i33.tinypic.com/2l9ib91.jpg)
the uper arms are almost done, im so pumped :)
-
ya im pumped for you this truck is awsome, i cant say it enough, i love everything youve do to it, this new place sounds great i wish i could find something like that around my house and a buddy or two to split the rent with, i mean i have a grage to use but it has no eletric, so i have to run extension cords from the inlaws house to the grage and it dosent have a concrete floor or heat, so i can only work seasonly so it sucks otherwise id prob be alot futher along with my truck, but keep up the awsome work and cant wait to see more. 8)
-
great work and a lot of patience... love your thread.
-
The dan:
Did you make these?
Where is your new shop gunna be? Are you putting a lift in there?
-
The dan:
Did you make these?
Where is your new shop gunna be? Are you putting a lift in there?
Yes, lasered them out of 1/4, were moving from wallingford to industrial park road in middletown/cromwell
Figured out my lower arms will work till next winter or some other time to make them, so i need a new front driver lower control arm since i smashed it when i hit a tire and rim on the highway a while back
fount out my bags wont lift it enough for my ride hight, so i purchased a set of "slammed specialties" AKA firestone re8 bags that will give me 9 inches of lift, instead of 6
-
I had RE8's on a big block dually a few years back, lifted gloriously. That is a pretty mega bag for a small block though, you probably could of gotten away with the RE7.
D
-
Today was a bad day, i wrecked my DOM bent Control arms, ends up the properties of the DOM i had wasnt what i thought it was and fter i cut the slots to sandwich them onto the ball joint brackers, they cracked in two ans split the while way up
>:(
-
sorry about the spelling on that previous post, Iphones suck, anyways heres the new shop:
Bathroom and office in that corner:
spent the past couple days etching and epoxying the floors = easy clean up
(http://i46.tinypic.com/2gsmz2r.jpg)
and the office:
and its next door to my work which means progress should be good
-
Very nice! What's the rent like if you don't mind me askin?
-
So jealous!
-
the old shop was 675/mo this one is 800, 3 phase, natural gas heat, bathroom that isnt just 3 pieces of plywood.
in all honesty i feel like this new shop is just more comfortable, our landlord has some sweet toys now and hes very helpful and is working with us with everything, letting us borrow his forklift/ and hes going to have his electrician wire everything we need for free (well not free because we are paying him rent) but the other guy still hasnt fixed our heat from when we first started renting
im happy with it, tomorrows the big move so ill get some pics up when we settle in
-
Awesome! Good luck with the move.
-
Hey man
truck and shop is comming a long ways.I gotta ask a favor if you can.I see your truck is a non a/c truck. Is there any chance you can somehow give me a dimension how far the cutout for the heater core is to the blower motor hole is and how wide the square is for the heater core?? I just need to know so when i have to make my cutout i got a rough idea on its whereabouts.
My cab was a a/c cab at 1 time...
thanks
pat
-
Pat, why don't you just leave it as is and run an ac delete?
-

Vile,
the truck was originally a non a/c truck.I got the non a/c blower motor and housing for it. just need to cut out the hole for the heater core.I shouldve done this before i painted it.
-
subscribed.
-
Nice work! It's great to see someone with such a passion for fabrication.
So different then the just bolt this on and go run of the mill stuff.
Can't wait to see more!
-

this is the new shop
(http://i50.tinypic.com/vzzh4h.jpg)

and layed the place out :)
-
whoops sorry about hi res pics i did this off my cell phone
ps, we all know harbor freight sells garbage, but these casters are rated to 1000 lbs each, well, they didnt last anywhere close to that
(http://i50.tinypic.com/15yyuth.jpg)
anyways now ill be back to working on my truck, first thing on the list is to buy some DOM to finish my a arms and to get my watts link det up so i can have a dam rolling chassis
-
the place looks great cant wait to see more work done to the truck im very intrested in your project man 8)
-
hey i got a long bed also. to get the bed off did you just cut the carriage bolts and lift it or what? i gotta paint the back of the cab so its gotta come off soon
-
I've always wondered about the wiring for the taillights. Do you just cut em and use a butt connector later?

What do you mean Layne?
The Dan, those are movers dollies. Nice karate chop! lol Use these ones http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=32052
-
When you pull the bed off- What do you do about the taillight wiring? Can you pull the wires down through the bed?
I searched it. I know now
-
very nice shop...looks like you are into dirtbikes aswell (stickers on compressor)... cool
-
Use these ones http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=32052
The ones you linked suck for moving anything short of a engine or trans, I bought 4 of em and that is about the only use I have found for em, You but em under a car or truck and they will not move.
-
I've moved plenty of 5K lb plus vehicles with em... Maybe I'm just strong and have a nice floor.
-
You mean a nice floor like this?
Yea I do too and I'm strong enough to move a car with 2 floor jacks, but the wheels on My dollies sucked.
This is the hardest work they do now...
-
I see you went to home depot and bought floor paint.
-
Haha yeah we went back to hf and found that my friend from highschool is the general manager, and he gave us those metal ones for free, they roll my truck around on my painted floor no problem, granted my floor is industrial epoxy for use with machine shop floors, it's pretty sick stuff,
As for the bed bolts yea torch them and the wiring, there's a connector in the back somewhere I uncuppled, that's it
-
Oh yeah just got the new addition, a Rotary two post lift :) I'll post pics when I cherry it out
-
Is that shop just solely for your own enjoyment or is it a business as well? Looks awesome BTW.
-
My brother is working on starting a fab shop, im just enjoying my half, we split most purchases so i guess im helping his shop open. We'll see how it goes
but anyways about truck work:
i designed my watts link, now it just takes time to draw it up in cad, find my needle bearings, thrust washers with an oring, and machine the pin that i will press fit into half inch plate, weld, and then use in my axle truss
im about 90.5% sure im going to have this CNC'ed, i dont think i can get what i want out of the bridgeport
(http://i46.tinypic.com/awpxe.jpg)
then the start of the 9" truss/ watts link mount
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2n6fa1g.jpg)
took me forever, but at my work er have a graph scanner that i place the part on a piece of graph paper, scan it, and it will create a program on the laser to remake the part, friggin sweeet
-
wow that is pretty sweet, wish i lived closer to you guys id love to get in on your build and help and learn a thing or 2 keep up the great work, and good luck to your brother 8)
-
finaly got to use the dimple dies ;D
(http://i49.tinypic.com/30ctws4.jpg)
made my front bag mounts
(http://i50.tinypic.com/2di1t9i.jpg)
and thats it for now, i need to get a new driverside lower A arm thats not bent like mine is, so thats on my list of things to do, im ordering dom tomorrow for a arms and crossmembers
-
I see you went to home depot and bought floor paint.
Naa its a product called CANTOL industrial floor coating. Got it back when I was in the Navy and we got a new hanger built.
-
Man you've got access to some sweet machining equip don't you?
-
It comes with the field you work in, and an awesome boss I guess lol, but. Couldn't diagnose a odb system if life depended on it
-
Well you can fabricate some stuff for me and I'll diag your obd stuff, sound good? ;)
-
let me know what you need i may be able to help
-
Well thanks for the offer! If I do I will let you know. Same goes here too
-
got my DOM and some other stuff in, going to logan to see if i can get some cheep cold roll, then i need to find a driverside stock front lower A arm, if i cant find it ill be set back to making them, since mine is shot (caught a tire on the highway) so im setting my bender and lift up tomorrow, wish me luck lol, about 14 1" holes into concrete
-
Set up the tubing bender/ the 2 post lift/ and a bunch of other stuff, including wiring and painting the lift
(http://i46.tinypic.com/2n9ds8n.jpg)
I then bent up all my arms, took 2 days to do
(http://i47.tinypic.com/mkfbzk.jpg)
I then had to make custom washers for the poly bushings, i had a 5/8 inner and 1 3/4 outer demension, so i punched them at work out of 1/8th SS, so they look pretty and are strong
Last night i welded for 3 hours, i learned how to tig yesterday lol, but i had by boss do the ones that are on the bushings, then i did the rest, came out better than i expected
(http://i50.tinypic.com/29pzsls.jpg)
Then mocked everything up
(http://i47.tinypic.com/mwzmsg.jpg)
all i have to really do is shim the air bags so that the bumpstop that is intigrated in them hits
(http://i45.tinypic.com/ieh6vs.jpg)
and then the money shot:
I also ordered 7 lengths of DOM, i got it at $55 a length, it was cheaper than hot rolled electrically welded, so i hope that comes in tomorrow so i can make my 6 pt crss member on saturday.
-
Nice progress. Are you going to do the bottom ones also?
-
i want to, but the stock ones work for now, i think i may make them next winter, i have the stuff to do it
-
hey that looks good. your making some fast progress.
-
looking good man keep it up cant wait to see more 8)
-
Nice fab work. I love fabrication...
How do you like that bender? Is it a PITA being manual, would you prefer a hyd. one?
-
Love stuff like this..keep up the good work.. 8)
-
It all depends how much bending you do, when I do the cage I know I will wish I owned the hydro, but manual I think is better for the small stuff, since you can feel the spring of the meterial its easier to check your bend since you have to release the pressure.
I did alot of work this weekend I'll get pics up later, but I'm having front fender clearence issues, which are my main concerns right now
-
nice fab work!
-
Thanks guys, it keeps me motivated, I hope I can get on top of my crossmember this weekend
-
(http://i48.tinypic.com/246ut6d.jpg)
finished the lower bag mounts
also looked at it with the fender on it
(http://i48.tinypic.com/2mx3aft.jpg)
at ride height im going to have to pull the fenders so i can get another 3/4 atleast
and i started my tubular x member, its going to be a 6pt, it will help stiffen my frame along with making a nasty place to mount my carrier bearing:)
(http://i49.tinypic.com/30hqyp2.jpg), ill get more pics when its done. tons of tube work
-
Wow, nice welds!!
-
(http://i46.tinypic.com/2vjy6fd.jpg)
so the x member is coming along nice
heres the 6pt being added to it
(http://i45.tinypic.com/2hpkowl.jpg)
looking around for some stuff on the rack and pinion and a bunch of other small stuff, then i need to sit down and think about whats next
-
looks great
-
Thanks man, cant wait to see the final paint on the Mutt project :)
-
Been jamming to stevie ray alot lately and got some work done:
Axle truss kinda looking thing for my watts link:
my upper watts mount:
my fuel cell should be made by next week, its going to be rediculous ;D
All custom fit, stainless, and tigged by phill who puts every weld ive ever seen to shame, My boss told me when i started working that he was going to make me one, he came to my shop yesterday and has been more excited than ever
Then my brother and i put a cage in my friend Ody's truck:
-
finished the mounts for the watts, well mock up atleast:
not to brag, but friggin cool huh?
-
You have come long way man keep it up looking good
-
That looks sick! I gotta check it out in real life sometime
-
my shops your shop, doors almost alwyas open.
as you can see the f/c is 304 stainless, i need to mod the original design to fit the watts link though, i dont think my boss Vin is going to be happy, i mean look at him here, thats the face after telling me how his 33 ford coupe (with all chevy parts, and a glass body) is a real machine because its a ford.
-
lol he sounds like a cool guy though!
-
Any progress? I'd like to see more, and I know I'm not alone!
-
yeah whats the latests update?
-
(http://i37.tinypic.com/iqgf8i.jpg)
made little braces on my mounts
finished the cell
(http://i34.tinypic.com/f09755.jpg)
had to clearence the watts mount and the cross member for the fill neck that i forgot i put on the fuel cell, whoops
(http://i38.tinypic.com/210yb6a.jpg)
theres more, not that i have pictures of, i cut and dropped the frame in front of the engine 3" to get the bumper down low, i also fish plated the rest of the frame, cleaned all the welds up, and mocked the front sway bar, im having a horrible time getting the rear to work with me, i have one that my friend is usign on his 57' and i called the place ne bought it from and they have no clue where or when he got it, so im SOL, and i also ran into a shock problem.... where do i put them? so i have been working on a cantilever set up on the outside of the frame, hopefully i can get it to work,
-
What's up the dan? How you making out? Did you decided what you're going to do with the rear suspension?
-
Awesome work.
There's quite a few people on here doing inspiring work. Love seeing the progress.
-
Seriously guy, thats some impressive work on your truck. Good job.
-
(http://i53.tinypic.com/w9z6li.jpg) sway bar ser up in the rear
(http://i54.tinypic.com/zxjg2s.jpg) rear break lines, breather goes right threw the T for the rear :)
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2n7i0ig.jpg) everything in
(http://i54.tinypic.com/e6pxc2.jpg) cut the bed out and mocked it up :)
(http://i52.tinypic.com/or19ms.jpg) and thats what i got so far. i made new bed mounts so i dont drill threw my frame, im cutting the floor out of my friends k20 so i have more bed meterial, and i am working my :( off this winter because i have come to conclusion im building an LS1/3 T56 combo for it. stand alone electronics and a clean engine bay with custom stainless long tubes.
Im at that point now... i just need to get it done so i can run the power tour in 2012
-
ps, it took me 6 months to find that rear sway bar ;D but if anyone ever needs a very good place that will help you find it for those 6 months, or need any parts like mustang 2 front ends ETC.. Fatman Fabrications saved me, and i owe them so much for helping me
-
and thank you all for the support and credit, im just doing what my brain thinks i should, and skipping the paper step
-
That Looks incredible can't wait to see pics of the completed project!
-
Looks awesome! Keep us updated
-
Work uber hard and roll in primer for the 2011 powertour. I wanna have a dually tuckin 22.5 Alcoa's for the 2012 tour, I hope flipping the Yukon hasn't set me too far back.
-
i keep sticking with these wing type brackets, i have a thing for them, strong, and good looking i suppose. then my anal dimple dyes,
(http://i56.tinypic.com/33avr4j.jpg)
had to cut out everything for the fuel cell, i will be welding and bracing the cross suports, putting the brackets on for the bed, then cutting the fenderwells some more, but i have a feeling i need to make the hump over the c-notch before i cut the upper inner fender out of the bed or it will relax, it already has a little, but i made my body lines, considering the frame, only took 3/16" shims on the cab which could partially be from the sagged rear body mounts
-
so last night i decided not to work on my truck......
so my buddy nick took my wheels and tires and decided to get them mounted and balanced.... $20, shady ordeal, said the guy needed 100 psi to set the bead... $75 tires who cares...
anyways got them on..
set it at ride height, realized after pondering a while i was an inch below, o well.
built my fuel filter/pump bracket and plumbed it using aluminum 5/16 hardline and compression fittings.
also with that i found out different sized V-belt pullies work awesome when bending it, just a sweet trick, all different size radii
Then screw facebook, because i posted a picture up, and my friend sam decided that its not cool till he sees it on the ground, which required meto cut the inner layer of the outer fender off the front and rear.... but i did it right with a 21.25" radii in back and the plasma, came out better than imagined:
got finals this week so probably not touching it again till next week, but its in my shop on the ground, so awesome!!!
-
What are those steelies off of bubba?
-
that was half the fun, finding 20" steel wheels! i think i said it a while back but you gotta look under the back of a mopar truck
-
So you just used some adapters and bam? Or you redrilled them because I see you using the stock chevy center caps? I am asking because I love the look.
-
the rear is out of a ford bronco, so its 5.5 on 5, which is what the rims are, im modifying the center caps to fit they are kinda just resting. then im turning and redrilling the front roters, which doesnt look to fun, i have to mill the inside to clear the larger lug pattern.
-
So don't get mad because I don't think I fully understand you. On the front your are going to redrill the rotor and move the studs? or your going to oblong the holes so the studs fit? Thats cool that you put a bronco rearend underneath. The width of those wheels are 8.5 right?
-
yes, i will eventually get the rears widened, probably next winter after i burn some miles off these tires, going for a 10" rim, 12" tire, the fronts im going to redrill on a different location, oblonging is not safe at all, but the inside dimention of the rotor cup is less than the outside circle of the 5.5" lug patter, so for those 5 new holes, i have to take and endmill and run it down their new location, as well as drill a hole in the center of that endmill mark, to make the new lug pattern. also, the hub is too large for the 20's hubcentric inside hole, so i have to turn the hub about 1/16" to make them fit
-
Wow, and Im glad you tried this before me. I would think the hub hole would have been fine, just get some adapters/drill new holes. Wish ya the best of luck on your truck though its looking great.
-
adapets might work, but i already have to bring my a arms in, since my track width is too wide my tires already hit my fenders not turning, this is going to be the tough part
-
Yea but even with adapters I'd have the problem with the hub. I dont have access to any shops willing to do anything close to that for me.
-
(http://i51.tinypic.com/mctcmg.jpg)
i rolled my inner fenders today, and had the semi-circle lasered for ease, same radius of the plasma, and i completely cut the inner side of the fender out so i have access to this:
talked to a few old school guys, and mental knowledge, ive decided welding the holes would be alot of heat and could possibly wreck my whole bed side, so im going to make small plugs to weld onto the backside and grid smooth, this will create small vallys that i can then use filler to fill in. im going to punch some holes in 16ga in the boshert punch friday and start making plugs, then use rustbullet on the inside of the fender to keep rust from re-finding its home
-
Nice to see progress. Im loving this truck.
-
Sweet,
Panel bond adhesive works great too
-
i ended up getting the 3m pannel bond. but getting the bed blasted is being my issue now. one guy who owes me a few favors told me he didnt want to, so im waiting till spring and will do it myself.
been going slow with school, but thats the bed so far, waiting on some warmer weather to cut out some bed floor out of some scrap truck somewhere to finish the top, then get some rear bed side pieces for the lower well, blast then off to the side it goes
-
Hey man it's Gary from the CT motocross community haha. I finally got my short bed lowered but man your project is INSANE! Excellent work! I'd like to check this out in person sometime!
-
sure, my shops in middletown, hit me on fb, Daniel Mayo Perry
update: no more 355 or muncie......
thats my motor tech nick from The Dyno Shop in wallingford. specializes in nitrous, EFI and LS1's
(http://i51.tinypic.com/2rzuqrr.jpg)
(http://i51.tinypic.com/2dt7x5f.jpg) Notch is done
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2nsz9qt.jpg)
with the 6.0 im getting a magnum t56, and also chopping out my front end and putting a corvette c5 or c6 front whichever i get a deal on first. should be pretty awesome.
-
all it needs now is 200% more turbo's.
-
im more of an all motor guy, call it what you want but if you can build a knarly motor without nos or induction, your a hero in my books. i was thinking down the road make it an all bore screamer
-
Lol I hear ya, my truck, motor, whole things being built on the premise that it should be obnoxious. Any other vehicle I could realistically run 10s. In the crew it'll probably go 13s, but still be equally fun. 500 horse out of a 6.0 is fairly easy, anything more just means more power.
-
I actually talked to Stockton Wheel co last week about these wheels, and they reccomended adaptors for them. The ones they have are 1.5" thick. I asked them about changing the center section and they said they weren't able to change them, he told me why but I cannot remember for the life of me why.
-
thats why my rear axle is a 5.5 on 5 out of a f series, the front is now a corvette c5 front, so wheel adapters may be a necessity, but im going to try some tricks and see what i come up with
so yeah c5 corvette front:
-
Wow, that c5 front looks wicked. Have you already researched that swap? Do you know if it will be tough to get that in there?
-
From what I've found, I'm one if the first to retrofit this set up. some hot rod guys use the control arms and spindles but not the whole setup. Thus I'm on my own. Shouldn't be too bad
-
Now I'm paying a lot more attention, that swap has been my secret fantasy for a while
-
Just set the frame and chassis square to my floor, luckily the concrete lines kinda set up a grid And they are very straight. I'm now just working on setting the whole thing up and making a jig to set the front where it needs to be.
-
(http://i52.tinypic.com/avsffa.jpg)
made the chassis jig and marked all my nesessary data
(http://i54.tinypic.com/2yoajk3.jpg)
test fit all my stuff to figure out how low the cross member can be comparative to the lowest point on the driveline which shows that the cross member and oil pan are almost on the same plane, the crossmember is a tad lower, but the transmission is pretty high
(http://i51.tinypic.com/etussy.jpg)
this is a C5 oil pan (bat wing) and motor mounts, the mounts are OEM GM and the aluminum is pretty cool and light weight, those mount into the front crossmember
-
heck of a build
-
this build is getting wilder and wilder by the min i love it cant wait to see more 8)
-
Heres more:
spent 6 hours dialing the whole front set up into its own jig, then when i get the wheels straight i can center it onto the chassis jig to the centerline of the front wheels. cant wait to start fabbing some brackets
(http://i51.tinypic.com/316u8eg.jpg)
finals in school are this week so ill have an update this weekend ;D
-
Very cool the dan! This is one heck of a build.
-
This is a awesome build!! Keep up the great work!
-
i cant wait to beat the crap out of it. and destroy mustangs.
I had a dream the other night that i was camping, and i woke up to my truck running the way it was with a 6 speed though.. i was so mad when i woke up, to walk out to the driveway and get in my beater ford ranger ???
-
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2ilizki.jpg)
put it in place, had to lift it by hand, luckily i know some strong gearheads
(http://i56.tinypic.com/xqg6tf.jpg)
waiting on headers, i think im going to cheap out on them, i would really like stainless, but $1200 isnt in my budget right now, so hooker supercomps are looking pretty nice, only issue is i need to figure out how low they will hang
-
good luck man, it will be a thing of beauty, that thing will handle like a dream!
-
Dude its been almost 4 months of suspense... whats the deal?
-
(http://i54.tinypic.com/e6yh34.jpg)
Purchased 98 camaro headers and modified them to fit. it was a pain trying to get something that didnt hang too low. making headers out of steel cost 700 in meterials.... these were $250 from hooker
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2092etu.jpg)
got my intake in and finished the passanger side frame. the intake was the wrong one, it needs the injection bosses so im sending it back. the carb is on there just for a picture
(http://i52.tinypic.com/2lwrwud.jpg)
This is kinda what i wanna do for my throttle body, kinda will look like a carb, but its not going to be (obviously) i want people to open the hood and not know what engine it is...
im not a fan of heims on my steering. especially in a truck ill be racing. so i made my frame go around it.. lots of bends but the cage will tie into the main spots to support it all. plus im fishplating it
(http://i53.tinypic.com/23rodmq.jpg)
clears my steering rack, and the whole frame clears the headers so when i ever have to remove the engine i can remove it downward on my lift by just removing a few bolts, a fuel line and a break line and a positive wire. (well in a nut shell)
thats all i got, been really busy at the shop. so not much truck time. next week i should have the front attached and order the front air over shock bags and get those mounted as well as the upper a arms
-
Great Job! Looks sick!
-
You sir do some amazing work! Great job!!
-
Lovin it! Just gotta hate when making the money to build the toys gets in the way of building the toys. Keep it moving bro, looks great!
-
brackets were made as well as a front cross member, had to make sure the frame didnt relax from welding.
this one was fun.
so the front is now attached. im waiting on new bags for the front (air over shock) and making upper control arm mounts. sooo pretty much waiting on some pay checks and time
-
Ridetech 4.1" 32 way adjustable compressing and rebound
The passanger side has gone smooth. When i talked to ridetech they said no one there has made C5 front suspension work on airbags... well i have. i made plates for the Control Arm that integrated the shock mounts with the plate as well as clamping the L channel of the arm (since it it forged aluminum). I didnt want to drill it because forged aluminum is prone for cracking at a hole without a boss, and you cannot weld it without losing its structure.
Then the driverside frame got in the way.... so i cut the frame back apart and am sleeving the tubing for the rack and pinnion steering shaft (didnt have the shocks when i made it)
here is the new section of the frame completed
Got the front lug converters in because im hoping to have it rolling on air by the time next semester starts
(http://i40.tinypic.com/s4w7yp.jpg)
I got the front located with some brackets i had laser cut at work. came out really good IMO
(http://i39.tinypic.com/23r9z61.jpg)
My uncle finished my Watts link. it came out perfect. now im making the bearings and seals. i think he was waiting on christmas
(http://i42.tinypic.com/muiul3.jpg)
-
Awesome!
-
Incredible work so far.
I love your frame jig. We do something similar with circle track chassis' so we can put them back to the base points after a wreck.
-
thanks guys. im hoping to not wreck it but it definitely will get some time on the track
-
Awesome work!
-
That is one sick truck you have there.... awesome fab work!
-
Thanks guys. Sent the cam to all American blasting in Ellington last week, still waiting on it so I can start the cage and make the upper control Arm
Brackets
-
Nice build. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
Looks awesome!!! Love the attention to detail... Keep up the good work!!
-
Cabs coming back tomorrow, now i can finally get work done to the roll cage and front upper control arm brackets
got my fuel pump and filters mounted
(http://i41.tinypic.com/2cncydy.jpg)
Made my upper control arm mounts, i will notch a 1 3/4 hole into them to put the roll cage tubing threw
(http://i44.tinypic.com/esj2o2.jpg)
-
Awesome work!
-
cabs back.. first time ive mocked it up with the T56 and LQ4, had to cut it up again...
all fits under the cab
(http://i43.tinypic.com/ws48ic.jpg)
-
Jealous...
-
CaptKaos
im pretty thankful that someone of your status is jealous of my pile of metal
these didnt make it up last night...
-
(http://i44.tinypic.com/vzgc2w.jpg)
-
Man, that is a lot of work going into that truck. It will be interesting for sure to see it progress and the final product. Keep up the work and the pics.
-
CaptKaos
im pretty thankful that someone of your status is jealous of my pile of metal
I would love to have that suspension setup with custom frame but I have nowhere to do it. I am probably going to have to just buy a Porterbuilt C4 front section to go with the Vette IRS I aquired a while back.. How about jigging me up one in a shorter wheelbase... ;)

I can make that happen dont kid yourself ;D
I Ordered my Wilwood Pedal assembly and 7/8 Tandem Master Cylinder as well as clutch master. there is tons of info that i read up on about what to go with especially going from power to manual brakes, And what one guy said on a link to Lateral G, "If there is a rod hanging out the side of the car, manual brakes will still come to a stop" and they will work as good if not better than power brakes as long as you have done your line piston and caliper sizing homework
-
I can make that happen dont kid yourself ;D
But how would I pick it up!
-
i hope in a 73-87 chevy wrecker or there abouts
-
You know he has to buy one now right? Lol
-
I actually know where one is, but I ain't buying it.... Not because I don't want to....
BTW, I nominate this for the In Progress month, send me a High res picture.
-
let me know if i got a little time for the "in progress" i feel honored. but i wanna clean my area and use
my brothers nikon for the picture.
but then does that make me disqualified for a 4x2 catagory when its all done since its "the same truck" twice?
-
are you planning to be done this year? if so you can only be in one category.
-
haha in my dreams capt. in my dreams.
i hope by next spring she will be complete. im picking up what your putting down. one shot per year
-
got a few boxes from wilwood
(http://i55.tinypic.com/2nvf6g3.jpg)
pedals had to be moved toward the seat so i made a box to fit everything and mount the assmblies and fitted it
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2aqg6a.jpg)
then somehow after i got them in the measurement was off in the height 2 inches... so i had to cut it back out and decided id do it legit and cut all my driver firewall out
(http://i51.tinypic.com/m9yhxt.jpg)
then made a template for the new piece
(http://i55.tinypic.com/slnzbr.jpg)
i also machined off some of the material off the air compressor mounts. i dont need it 1/2 the whole way.. i guess a little weight saving doesnt hurt
(http://i53.tinypic.com/ih2m4m.jpg)
-
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2phxe.jpg)
passenger firewall is done and seam sealed around the inside... driver side is being a PITA with that pedal box, but ill make it work, gotta cut the box down about in inch, trying to get as much leg room as possible.
-
I like it! Great job!
-
Tonight i ordered an Ididit tilt steering column, and cut all but a half inch off the pedal box, and i dropped the driver floor down 3" so the pedals could move forward. it wasnt perfectly comfortable when i was sitting in it so i figured do it now instead of regreting it later...
-
Got the upper A arms tacked into location with extra tubing to notch, and tested how far the suspension travel is. and it will drop to the ground stuffing the 20's on corvette c5 suspension. pretty pumped about that.
also finished the center section to my firewall had it all laser cut at work/ as well as redesign and welded in the pedal box
(http://i41.tinypic.com/ir2qsl.jpg)
then got a roll on the engine cover since the center section of the firewall will be tigwelded to the engine cover i wanted to prove everything out before i started at it
(http://i43.tinypic.com/25tf3ud.jpg)
-
that looks pretty sweet
-
Nice progress!
-
hey thanks, got alot of work coming in on it in the next couple weeks, cage should be complete by the end of march, which means it can come off the chassis jig and roll on all 4's
-
gonna need a couple front fenders or beds to make some fender raisers because my wheel wells are too low, Vile i dont know if you have any but i can get them out of your yard for a couple $
-
Are you going with the 73-80 front end or 81- up? I have plenty of 73-80 fenders.
-
Your truck looks awesome, and I wish I had the time and money to make build my truck even half as good as yours. Crazy attention to detail.
-
been doing alot of customer car work but that just means more income for the c10
Tonight i tackled one of the hardest things ive had to do yet, and thats make a contoured cut in a blind area, it came out fantastic and do not think i could ever do it so nice again if i had to.
thats the picture inside the cowl
oh and i forgot to mention i had to pull the cab off and shorten the frame 1.5" because the truck isnt factory wheel base anymore for some reason... the front wheel was off center 3"... so the motor is back 1.5" more now so i had to remake the engine tunnel wider and also made it higher for the future fuel rails, 3" higher
(http://i41.tinypic.com/amqssh.jpg)
more to come of coarse.
-
oh yeah, i also finished the lowering the angle of the drivers floor board, 1.5" and rewelded it in with a new filler piece, no pics
-
Looks awesome!
-
got my transmission tunnel mocked up with cardboard (i ended up cutting it all out of 18g on friday)
started the front part of the cage and into the cab
(http://i40.tinypic.com/ta6f4z.jpg)
and mock up of some of the bends
[IMG]http://i44.tinypic.com/1h4b5c.jpg
-
Looks good. Are you going with the 73-80 or 81-87 nose?
-
my original 83 for now, if i come across a quad beam 86/87 grille im going to go with that, better lighting.
do you have any junk front fenders laying around?
-
I just trashed a bunch but I'll check in my closet at work. I have an extra 88-91 radiator support if you want it.
-
HEY if you want those valvle covers to work...JEGS sells a kit that alows them to work...i think they cost 100$
-
just read through 22 pages of build... I was hoping to see it completed at the end of all that! You're doing a great job and have taken on some HUGE projects on this truck. You look at things kinda like I do... while most people are happy with whatever they can buy out of the catalog, people like you and I are scratching our heads and solving problems.
You've got a great place to work, and access to a lot nicer equipment (and apparently a bigger budget) than I do LOL
Keep up the good work! subscribing so I can follow your progress :)
-
It's not always about budget and you can tell by the dan's build it's more about dedication and determination over $dollars$ the dan definitley has acces to some cool stuff and this build is defiitley a one of a kind to be proud of.
-
I Appreciate the kind words guys!. I do have access to some crazy machines but i weigh my ussage of work materials and machinery on my paycheck. i got offers for a little ligher money for other places but wouldnt get back what my boss leaves open for me. keeps me staying around for now.
And i always lived by "if you can afford the tool buy it, dont borrow it" because then you'll always have it at your conveniance.
Cody c10 kid, as for the valve cover issue.. that was way back in the day, we are on LS motors now haha. as well as those adapters will not allow a full roller rocker
Timberwoldfxdl- i like doing things that some may have done but most dont. Anyone can go get a porterbuilt dropmember for the from of their c10 and use tubular A-arms... but that raises the center of mass of the truck, making handling worse. so instead of any sort of sacrifice, research and develope your own stuff and things can come around in a way you never thought of.
Thanks vile, i have two of those radiator supports and grille/headlight combos as well (look kinda like the 90's set up) but i like the 83-87 better.
Did i ever invision where i am now? no. when i first had the truck i just wanted a fast standard transmission old squarebody. The C5 front was a dream i talked to my uncle about 2 christmas's ago and sometimes things just fall into place.
Vermonster 4x4 mudbog in Vermont is next weekend and we are cracking down (kinda like Overhaulin') on a roll cage for an enormous quadcab 70 something f350, so my bender hasnt been around to play with the chevy, but soon enough
-
Fantastic work, I can't wait for the finished product! I'm curious though, you've got an LS engine in there but it looks like you've got a carb on it. How come? I've got a 5.3 (fuel injected) in my C10 and I couldn't imagine switching to a carb, it feels like a step backwards to me. Regrdless, keep up the good work!
-
nucknoel89, carb is just cosmetic for pictures, im using an square bore fuel injection intake though so it mimics a carb. i dont like how LS intakes look, or the LQ's so im doing it this way, plus my roll cage crosses the front of the engine so having the throttle body there wouldnt be the best plan of attack.
i would never make an Ls carb either. their FI is such a great unit.

i ended up having to reroute the belt again because the crank only had 1/4 belt on the pully, so i machined a mount using the C5 ac tensioner and stock idler pully (wider) so i could run the tensioner on a straight section of belt
he may have a line on Z06 front breaks for me too,
updates as they come!
-
Looks amazing Dan! Are you going to run bags or coilovers up front?
-
running those ridetech bag over shocks
-
Shockwaves...
-
(http://i49.tinypic.com/nzgikk.jpg)
batter tray is done, not that i needed to do it now but i couldnt get in my brothers way with making the A pillars
(http://i47.tinypic.com/2ep50df.jpg)
bumper mounts as well as where the rollcage will end
(http://i49.tinypic.com/20thug6.jpg)
rear main hoop, tightest cage ive withnessed
(http://i46.tinypic.com/29gk74h.jpg)
there wasnt enough crank-belt contact so i rerouted the belt and used a C5 AC tensioner and regular LS pully to make it work
(http://i46.tinypic.com/2r22khj.jpg)
This is a rough photoshop of the ZR1 wheels that i may end up running, the steelies arnt allowing me to steer at all and flaring the fenders isnt an easy task to make it look good.
-
(http://i48.tinypic.com/117hc1j.jpg)
front bumper mounts/ front part of the engine cage is done.
whole front end is ready to sit on the wheels
upper shock mounts are done as well
(http://i50.tinypic.com/34npmas.jpg)

:o
Amazing!
-
You got crazy with this build, the title is missleading lol. Anyways, great stuff man. Keep it up. What did you do with the original tube A-Arms you built? I'll take them off your hands if they are still laying around ;)
-
Great Progress
-
Wow... I looked at the first page and was like cool he got some spindles and rattle canned it flat black then clicked to the last page and had to go back and read the whole thing. Good work man
-

sadly i sold them to someone lucky on ebay for $133? didnt even break even on cost of material with that one off stick of 1.25 3/16 DOM, but that purchased my alt and waterpump
Wow... I looked at the first page and was like cool he got some spindles and rattle canned it flat black then clicked to the last page and had to go back and read the whole thing. Good work man
a little bit deceiving but when the finish product comes around i hope it still looks like that rattle canned spindle dropped truck, thats the goal
kind words appreciated as always. hope to have her on all 4's in october (fingers crossed)
Great Progress
-
That is a sick truck, NICE WORK! 8) Just read the entire thing, that truck has come a long long way. I was hoping to see her finished once i got through all of that, but im glad i read/looked at it all. That truck is nothing short of amazing and your gonna have alot of pride in it when its done.
-
Wow, this truck has come a long way since the first time I saw it in 2009! Looks awesome!
-
(http://i48.tinypic.com/25thhes.jpg)
steering was fun, Ididit columns use a oval shaft and finding a nice joint for that was near impossible, so i indexed a moroso one and machined the oval out.
i finish welded the tunnel and ground off the excess meterial. about 8 grinding wheels and alot of headaches
(http://i45.tinypic.com/346t4b7.jpg)
i lasered these new wheel centers out to convert the 5.5 - 4.5 lug pattern for the corvette front, this brought my front wheels in about an inch on each side, and i changed to a smaller tire up front so now the 20" steel street wheels will work. then ill buy some vette wheels to run on the track.
here is a little of the tightest truck rollcage ive ever witnessed. thanks to my brother for bending the tubes and making the welds perfect. guys good...
This is the rear rollcage mount.. when i finish welding that plate ill show you how i did it. impossible to weld...
and i got bored on thanksgiving so ditched doing lunch and finished my headers, deleted the egr ports and tigg'ed on the flanges inside and outside
Im looking into Z06 front brakes (c6) and putting my c5 front callipers in the rear. not sure if ill have to trade wilwood masters for that set up since i have 2, 7/8 bore masters but i will figure it all out if i get them or not.
-
Very nice work, I really hope you have fun with that truck after all the hours you put into it.
-
Fantastic work!
-
Awesome progress!
-
you got a sweet build going on man keep up the work and looking forward to see the final project!!
-
Thanks guys. It's coming together. Problem is I don't wanna half ass anything or work on it when I'm done so I'm doing everything now. There's a theory amongst friends that everything is $400 and its true. So I get about 1 thing a month or every other month and that's what sets me up with work to have done. Budgets suck
-
took a fridged ride in the local gorcery getter to get the tree saturday:
then got back to work
(http://i45.tinypic.com/2dtw1n7.jpg)
this weld was the crappiest thing ive had to do, i had to drill the plate with a 1/4 inch bit to reviel the bottom side of the tube to weld it since there was no way to get the welder in there.
made the front cage mounts
(http://i48.tinypic.com/2ufq001.jpg)
then welded the cage on. Full welding this was fun, i had to flood the inert gas around the tube and heat and bend a piece of tungsten to get around the backside of the cage

I wish I had your skill bro, I'd love to get rid of the adapters on my steelies.
-
worked my ass off this new years break, 14 hour work day on saturday working on this pig
it all started.....
Thursday when my axle shafts came back from moser for the resize for the C5 front brake adaptation im making. and i want all the lug patterns the same (4.75 on 5)
then long story short non of the hubs matched up and the flange OD was too large, chucked it up and turned my shiney just resurfaced axle shafts.
Then i had to bore the center hub of the rotors to fit the 9" then lasercut brackets to fit the rotors
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2afmvjc.jpg)
I then turned some custom spacers on both sides. one to fit the odball bolt that came OEM on the C5 front calipers, and the other to space the new weld on bracket i lasercut away from the flange of the axle
(http://i50.tinypic.com/1xx5r9.jpg)
I did what i had to do to the front wheels to the rear (lug convert the 5.5 on 5 to 4.75 on 5 which involved welding in a new hub piece. got the wheels on and finished the X on the back of the cage, as well as other small loose ends
(http://i45.tinypic.com/6gj3vr.jpg)
i can see some light at the end of the tunnel. could be a train, could be a homeless man... either way
(http://i48.tinypic.com/2m5m0hw.jpg)
Dimple die, and tied to the cab, only tack'ed for now untill we finish the seatbelt bars and door bars
-
(http://i45.tinypic.com/2kfs54.jpg)
Momo steering wheel and SweetMFG quick release, courtesy of my girlfriend
(http://i48.tinypic.com/oqgg9z.jpg)
i had to make a threaded inner shim to convert it from a GM style ididit column to a 3/4 shaft style Sweet splined disconnect, pictures to come once done
(http://i46.tinypic.com/jauyz7.jpg)
and last but not least a little feeling of things finally falling into place.
-
(http://i46.tinypic.com/142u9zn.jpg)
there is the spline for the sweetmfg quick release, i made an allen headed nut to slip into the 3/4 shaft and welded it in with a 9/16 fine thread to adapt to the column.
ill have the column wheel cover done tomorrow, laser cutting it machining it out of stainless and reaming a .997" id to press fit that splined shaft at the bottom
-
Nice!

shock crossmember is done, finally just need to make another pass of welding
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2drz4nd.jpg)
air ride controls done
i am really disappointed in what is out there for steering column brackets. I almost cut up a top fuel dragster connecting rod, but the main bearing was larger than 2 inches, and Ididit's bracket is OK but its $90, not worth it to me. heres what i made in 4 hours with some quick thinking (http://i50.tinypic.com/34h71qo.jpg)

Looks sick
-
Incredible.
-
I know it's not polite to stare, but all I can do is just sit here with my mouth open. I actually had to wipe drool off of my desk a minute ago. I'm totally impressed that's saying something for me. Outstanding job!

I've gotta stop in some time for sure

just read throught the whole thread again andit's just as sick as the first time...it's been over 24hrs..need updates.

No updates, purchased 7 different dimple dies to help with the fabrication of the front support and some good latches

that is one BA truck!! 8)
-
Magazine quality!
-
This is the coolest truck I have ever seen....Awesome job!
-
One bad piece.. 8) 8)
-
Incredible dude. The body panels are the only thing left that look factory. You have literally rebuilt the entire thing from the ground up. I don't have that kind of patience. Great job!
-
Just read the whole build and....................IM SPEACHLESS!! Your truck is BAD! I showed my 7yr old and he just about said the same exact thing. Im getting ready to make a purchase on one and I hope I can build it to the 1/10 of yours and I would be ecstatic. Keep up the amazing work man, you are awesome! Will definitely be lookin at this build while im building mine.
-
Lookin good! Where did you say u were again in CT?
middletown, about 15 minutes south of hartford
yeah its coming together very clean,
although i had a fever last night and had a nightmere that someone uncovered it and was anglegrinding a rusty piece of steel next to it, then decided to turn it over, and it messed the bore up ??? :-X so that wasnt great haha
I hate it when that happens, lol. I use to have nightmares about my brother going out and deciding to take my truck for a test run while I still had major tune ups to do still and blow up my engine. So I ended up taking the keys out of it and storing them.
But if he really do that I'd have to break his legs. ;)
Cool deal...I used to live in Woodbury years ago.

got my wilwood brake kit in for the z06 rotors, and a howe radiator with a flexalite black magic fan. saved my radator support and only have a little bit more work to do on it

i splurged
t56 magnum close ratio and quicktime bell housing, as well as spec stage 3 clutch. finished the radiator support, not to finish the upper rad mounts.
-
Awesome! Nice progress and design. The look really flows nice
-
Thanks man, goal is to kinda look like a stock restomod from the outside. I want to get denied for a car show for being a farm truck again. ::)
-
Those are some monster calipers....Are you putting the same ones on the rear? At least you know stopping won't be a problem
-
the stock c5 corvette ones are out back
-
bed finally got back to the shop
then put onto the truck after extensive cutting and bracing
(http://i43.tinypic.com/zwxatd.jpg)

So i had to cut an access hole in the bed floor for my air ride distribution box. God forbid i blow a compressor line i would never be able to get the truck back into the air or even get a jack under it

-
That looks awesome!

This truck is so cool.
-
So I noticed you welded in the cross member over the motor. So what happens if the motor goes and you need to pull it? Guess it isn't a big deal to cut and weld it back in place though when the time comes.

It is not the easiest to see but the cross bar (over engine) I believe comes out, look closer at these 2 pics.

This truck is so cool.
So I noticed you welded in the cross member over the motor. So what happens if the motor goes and you need to pull it? Guess it isn't a big deal to cut and weld it back in place though when the time comes.
sorry i havent been at a computer lately, generally dealing with iphones for interenet.
yes its removable as stated. its kinda hidden, pretty fun part to make
-
At least you got some time to work on your truck.
My honey do list just keeps getting bigger. Gotta say though, wife is gone all next week for work, wife gone = any extra time I get not at work will be on truck.

Awesome!

Paxton Novi 2000, a little bigger than I wanted but the price was right, should be pulling it off his corvette in a week or two

Actually after seeing put together, it makes more sense now. That truck is going to be a work of art when you are done.
-
It already is!
-
It already is!
Biggest understatement I've seen yet!! how in the world are you able to d all this and afford to school at the same time?.. Keep it coming!
-
oh yes
-
It's easy, I don't sleep, I work too much, and I started my own manufacturing business.
School is the hardest part for sure. Last semester though. Thank God, going on 6 years!
Thanks for the love guys, it's been a blast building it not only for myself but to gain appreciation as a whole from some too notch guys is an excellent accomplishment
-
You da man! Wish I had half your talent.
-
I honestly appreciate every compliment. When I first came on here I never thought I would get to where I am now, or be at the level of talent that I've gained just by watching others and having that drive to better myself. I still can't paint for the life of me. Something Vile can do in his sleep with a head ache and still manage an amaxing paint job.

Been awhile since I have been on here. Amazing work!!! Truck is a piece of art!

so i have the base to my supercharger bracket done. as well as all the tensioners, i used a Dayco spring tensioner for the automatic, as well as a T-nut slide style for my mechanical tensioner, as seen i put a set screw to tighten it up. All of the spacers for the mounts are machined individually to fit each boss. now to design the uprights that reverse mount it to the heads.

Wow! You are so lucky to have access to do all of that. I miss having access to a full machine shop where I could fabricate just about anything. This thing is over the top and a masterpiece for sure!

Just a shop with my brother combining our tools and getting side work done to support this ridiculous addiction I've contracted called horsepoweritis! never could do this on just my day job thats for sure. Just remember both of your trucks are running, im going in on 6 years now!

Got my Innovators West 8 rib pulleys and balancer
(http://i57.tinypic.com/2j4yidk.jpg)
By far the hardest part of the 8 rib pulley setup is the power steering. So KRC doesn't make an 8 rib pulley for their pumps, and their pumps have a splined shaft. They wouldn't custom make me one (so pissed) so after extensive research and trial and error I got an 8 rib ford lightning pulley (too small) and some other plastic bullshit that ended up having the splines I needed. So I cut off the plastic pulley which left me a 1.25" OD boss with splines. Ordered a 6.5" corvette 8 rib from Innovators west and machined a flange that fit the ID,l, turned a welding fixture to hold the two together, pinned it using 1/8" tungsten rod and welded the splines boss and the flange together. Trued the runout in the lathe with a collet, and machined the back of the pulley so it gave me more adjustment. Now I need to index all 6 mounting holes and machine them into my custom hub. The Southbend lathe held .0015 runout between welding pinning and turning. Lately I've been impressing myself with machining and metal work, as I've learned it all from observation and trial and error. And watching some of these nuts on instagram.

So idk if i mentioned that i went with the 4 position accuair E-level air ride controls for my truck but:
I took of my upper control arms and used a ball end mill on one of the original bosses for the C5, i didnt want to add any critical stress points but i needed a flat square spot for the heim. Check out that clamping, they dont teach you that in tech school,
(http://i60.tinypic.com/dnm6u8.jpg)
Machined the front brackets to hold the potentiometer. had to get nifty with the Auto X feed and using the Y by hand to make a contour of the C5 Arm mount.
And then i machined some spacers that act as miss alignment for the heims as well as correct geometry for the arms
(http://i59.tinypic.com/1987zl.jpg)
Machined the rear accuair mounts

It's pretty mind blowing what you've got going on here, brother.

Moral of the story is that some vendors are awful. The trim doesn't fit and they sent me the wrong headlights, but I got the stuff over a year ago so there is no getting back from it. So I ended up restoring my rotting ones. This is as it sits:

then put the vette wheels on it

put about 240 miles on it this weekend with no issues other than a bad MAP sensor that's for an N/A motor and wont read boost, so I had a light foot for all of my driving

Major respect to you on this build. Absolute amazing job.

Thank You Mike. Just trying to be different!

had an oil pump failure at wide open throttle, the pressure blew 100psi and popped the seals on my supercharger. don't buy a Melling for an LS
-
That stinks! Where was the wedding? That place looks familiar, nice lookin trucks and nice lookin women :)
-
it was in Branford at Woodwind. She cleans my shop, pretty much an angel
So my Melling Oil Pump failed and sent my oil pressure to 100psi, and simultaneously the input seal on my supercharger blew out and littered my windshield with oil. We are back on the road now making 6-7psi of boost and spinning 12 wides at 45 with a roll on. Should take it back out this weekend and open her up.

Updates when I get home I promise! Huge life changes in the past 2 year's that took the truck off the road.

Where so i start.
After my last post I had some falling out with thw company i was working for. I had a huge choice to either move to NH or move to southern CT. Either way I was getting out of my ahop rental unit to focus more on my Engineering Career. I ended up taking the job in New Hampshire Whelen Engineering in fall of 15'
I went 3 months in a small apartment and literally lost my mind. I bought a house on a piece of land, drove the truck for the beginning of 16' after I rebuilt the rear end with a resprung Detroit and a strange pro aluminum center section, had some wheel bearing failures etc.
So in 2016 i drove it a bunch, then decided that i needed a shop because i lose my mind if i cant work. Especially in rural NH
So this is the c10 with 1650lbs of concrete in the bed

2 sets of QA1 shocks, and an optima battery that never worked well, I parked it in march of 2017 and focused on the barn and getting my shop set up.
So heres where we are:

Shocks are getting replaced with Fox 2.0's
Battery is going to an off the shelf unit
Paxton supercharger has 700 miles since rebuild and is leaking oil out of the seal, Vortech wont warranty it because its been over a year since it was rebuilt.
408 forged stroker
Fox Shocks
Ripping the bed apart to lighten it and fix the sending unit
Ditching the compressor/tank and going with a nitrogen setup
Dynamat and wrap the exhaust

I was wondering what happened to you, thanks for the update. Nice shop!

welcome back, i too i believe it was last week was going over the members and saw your name and wondered what happened. and x2 on the shop, is it yours?

Yessir. Shops mine about 250 feet from my house. It's takeneverything I've had for the past year and a half. I'll have find some timber framing pic's . Currently on the truck: rad support is getting blasted and powdered and my fronto fenders are getting redone/rebuilt. I couldn't get a low spot out of my marker french so I'm redoing it

You mentioned wheel bearing failures in a previous post. Was that isolated in the rear wheels and because of a setup you previously ran (the Detroit axle)?
-
did you happen to get a brake to bend the metal?
-
You mentioned wheel bearing failures in a previous post. Was that isolated in the rear wheels and because of a setup you previously ran (the Detroit axle)?
SKF Bearings for the SET-20 setup on the big bearing Ford 9" had issues with the seals and somehow started eating the race. I have swapped those ti Timkin and never looked back. You do want to put a small amount of sealer around the outer race of the axle for when you slide the outer bearing race in. The seal on the Set-20 seals the shaft to the race, but not anything to the axle housing - this will help with a leaky axle shaft. The bearing failure had nothing to do with my Detroit, and i wouldn't replace the detroit unless someone could prove me something better. I absolutely love it. The Ron Sutton spring swap was what really made the difference
Irish:
I have a roperwhitney box and pan that i do most of my bending on, I purchased a Di-acro 17 ton electro-hydraulic brake that i have up and running but i only have a 24" x 2.5" die set for it (came off my iron worker) I really should invest some time and money into that. but who has either?

Been too busy to update, probably wont have another for a while. Got it together and to the dyno on Saturday. 645/571 rear wheel on 9psi. Having an engine built by someone who knows camshaft profiles was one of the best things i ever did. The torque curve is 375ft/lb at 2500rpm. The cam and displacement use the blower alot more. The same pulley setup ran 12.8 psi on the stock 6.0. I will work on the tune some more and get it more crisp when I have more time for another session.
Also: I will probably never run air ride again. I had a line blow out on the dyno from exhaust heat and barely got it back on the trailer. the line was on the opposite side of the frame as the exhaust.. Make sure you have ample air flow when having your vehicle load-tuned (he can hold back 650hp with at any RPM) and use thread sealer, NOT teflon tape, on your steam ports.
Also buy Injector Dynamics injectors for anything youre building performance EFI wise.
Getting new tires from Chris at Autoworks NJ this Friday

I don't know if it's just me but pics aren't displaying. Sorry to hear about the air ride but it still probably felt good getting it on the dyno!

theyre working for me but are very slow to load. might be too big ;)

I am catching up on this but I am dumping the Air Ride option also before I even used it. I have been static for a VERY long time and I don't plan to change anymore.
I am taking the setup I have out of my Blazer and going with a Front and Rear C4 setup with Coilovers.
Must be nice getting it running and making good power!
