What year did they start using shoulder restraints
« on: September 05, 2019, 08:57:11 PM »
I have a 78 with 3 point shoulder restraint seat belts.
I'm changing the interior color from tan to black.
I found some nice black non shoulder belts.
I personally am ok with them, ever though I know the otherness are safer.
But just curious when we're the 3 point belts introduced to the c10
Thank you!!!!

My 74 only had the lap belts OEM. I have upgraded to the three point belts.

i think 77 was the last year(or first year required for shoulder belts). but if you have a safety inspection they might fail it or if you have a cop they might write you a ticket for not having a "proper" seat belt on and its up to you to prove that your truck came from the factory with lap belts.

this guy had a similar experience but his truck did come factory with lap belts

My 78 burb had 3 point in the front and lab in the rear so i had to buy a 3 point belt for my son in the back the plastic plugs are there. i know if a car didn't come with belts you don't need belts but if you cut and make holes for a belt then you must have belts. i don't think they care if it's 3 point or lap maybe in another state but ky doesn't. i have had friend get pulled over for not having a belt and had to tell the cop that it was a 58 vw bug and they didn't come with belts and he had to radio back because he didn't know that law. my 59 vw bug doesn't have seat belts so my son can't be in the car til he is 12 years old which is a bummer.

My '75 only had lap belts from the factory, and it has Silverado trim (the highest level that year).   Shoulder belts may have been an option.

The threaded holes were there in the door frame for shoulder belts, but I had to take off the trim and drill it out so I could access the hole.   However, the lower part of the aftermarket combination lap/shoulder belts is not exactly the same length as factory belts, so they don't really fit the way I want.

i think most of the years for our trucks had the option of shoulder belts but they wernt mandatory till 77. same deal with catalytic convertors, if your truck came with them from the factory you have to have them by federal law but if your truck never came with them then you dont have to have them.
