That was one long sentence! Since you want to keep it cost effective and don't wanna rebuild the engine run a summit brand cam. Why the gear drive though?

LOL. I had to read it real slow too. No biggy. Maybe he wants to hear it with the gear drive or just wants to lessen the chance of a chain stretching. I had it on a 70 Monte when I was younger. I miss that car.

ya the reason i want the gear drive is cuz i like the way it sounds and sry the i made my post so long and i wanted an idea of a cam to use not a link to figure it out on my own i like the way a rough idled motor with a gear drive sounds and the little bit of extra power the cam  8)makes

get a summit cam with close to the same specs as the performer rpm.

afraid the rough cams require more compression than stock and will be a dog.

You will get very quickly annoyed with the gear drive.

He might not. I never got tired of mine. It was not much different then a blower wine. I had the noisyer Pete Jackson gear drive.

I'd definately check out the summit brand cams, but figure out what RPM range you want and how much cam your springs will hold.  You'll probably want something with .500 lift or less so you don't have to upgrade to better springs.  I think I remember reading somewhere that the lower LSA is a bit rougher.....as in 108 will be more "lopey" than 115.  Sorry I can't suggest a specific cam, but my buddy says he enjoyed his Performer cam in his 78 LWB.  I never got to hear it or see it, but he said it was nice.

That's a pretty lousy attitude you have there. We already recommended a summit cam and I asked why you wanted a gear drive. If you want help people are going to ask you questions back to get a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish. It would also help if you used punctuation to allow everyone to better understand what you are asking like adding a ? mark at the end of a question.

Bullet cams has a small lopy cam #101268 LC 110 .458 lift, They used to be called Ultra Dyne. 662-893-5670  A small company with great service. I have used there cams alot. With just about any cam upgrade you'll have to replace the valve springs. And use a quality lifter. Make sure you deg that cam in, using a gear drive it will be off when you think your putting it in straight up.
You will have to modify most any set of headers you buy, seeing you have lowered the truck. All the headers I have bought or seen have one collector that is straight and the other is bent down, there never perfect. The hooker's I have on my elcamino where screwed up, I took a sawsall and cut a wedge out of the collector  near the flange and welded it back up. That made it straight.
I'm not a big fan of the gear drive either(or edelbrock carbs), I have a Pete Jackson Quiet type and It sucks, I'm just too lazy to change it, I have all the parts and a bigger UT cam waiting, maybe in the spring.

That was one long sentence!
Vile,
I was just thinking the same thing!
I am seeing quite a bit of that with the "Next generation"........Because is now "Cuz", and buddy is now "Body"
Anyhow, 83stepside,
the 87 engine that you are using, Does that have the swirl port heads?

Haven't heard or known anybody that has used one myself, but I guess the CompCams Thumpr line of cams might be what you are looking for, but they are pricey for sure. The Summitt that Vile recommended is about the most economical you are going to get. I have a 268 advertised duration cam and it's decently lopey at idle in gear but smoothes out some in idle at park. You could try a 274 or maybe 280 duration cam for the chop but if you don't have the induction or heads to back up the lift and duration on those cams (I don't recall what their LSA is; my 268 is 110 so the higher durations are going to be that probably or less) you are going to have a pretty crappy powerband. It will be all soft and doggy till around 2500 or 3000 rpm, pick up on power until the stock heads shut all the fun down around 4500 rpm at best. It will sound tough at idle in the parking lot though but don't challenge anybody to a race  lol

I have some vids of my truck idling and such to hear the cam but I don't have a website to host them.

Well if your 87 engine still has the stock tbi heads i would`nt even consider a hotrod cam. those heads are junk and don`t flow for nothing and your compression is only around 9.2:1 or so. I would look into the cams designed for TBI engines for the best performance.

For what it`s worth, I ran a geardrive years ago and it was a noisey one and I didn`t get tired of it. Of course I had 2 chamber flows dumped at the muffler so I couldn`t hear it inside the car.

And a little advice, I know your young and problbly a little inexperienced but getting a attitude because you didn`t get the answer you wanted to hear won`t help you in the future. When I try to help someone and get the responce you gave it`s the last time I will help them. I also have to agree that punctuation not only helps us understand what it is your trying to say and when your asking a question but it`s a good practice to get into for the future. Thanks for your service for our counrty.

If you don`t want to here peoples opinions then don`t make a post. Good luck kid, you`ll need it with that attitude.

o and 84shortbed me being a military person i respect who respects me

Actually your wrong. I helped you and was respectfull to you. I only offered advice. you got aggressive and disrespectfull to me and some other members. Your attitude clearly shows your just a punk kid and in my eyes your a descrace to the uniform. I only pray that you talk to your superiors in the same mannor. Hot headed kids like you know it all and will never listen to people who have been there done that. You guys just want the answer you want to hear right or wrong. I don`t care if you want to run a gear drive and I don`t care that you don`t have enough education to write your responces so that everyone can understand what it is that your trying to say.
