Building a 400 sb for boost
« on: February 24, 2011, 07:32:43 PM »
I just traded a '89 mustang gt for a '72 c10 stepside.  I know this is a '73-'87 forum but I have a '79 c30 crew cab dually so I feel like I still belong here.  Anyway the motor is freshly assebled by a race shop.  The guy I got the truck from is buddys with a race shop and had them build him the whole truck.  Autometer gauges, fuel cell, all sorts of stuff.  Brand new 700r4 trans 373 posi rear.  Lots of money in the truck.  The motor was built with parts the shop had handy.
It wasnt put together to be a fire breather.  Im looking to change that.  I am going to put a blower on the truck.  Most likely a 177 weiand blower.  6-71's are a little too radical at this point.  The truck runs good as it sits and is pretty quick but I want to put it in down in the 11 second range.  4-500 hp is my goal for now.  More is certainly ok.  Too much is never enough except there is a budget in mind.

It is not going to be a daily driver but it will be driven on the street.  It will be raced and is going to be driven hard.  I am looking to swap heads, cam, and slap the blower on it.  Are dart Iron Eagle Platinum Heads a good choice?  With the blower in mind I would get the biggest cc size available which is 72 cc.  Im thinking those heads along with a good blower cam and the 177 blower on say 6-8 pounds should get me my goal am I right?

Feel free to give me any tips or let me know what you think of my plan.

Thanks so much for your help and keep on truckin, Matt.

I honestly dont know.  The guy doesnt know much about the motor other then he gave his buddy alot of money to build it.  I guess I have to go in there and do my homework first before I can make too many plans.  I was kind of hoping to get away with whatever pistons are in there and just go with the bigger cc heads I can find to keep the compression low enough to be safe.  Maybe just wishful thinking but I'd hate to tear apart a freshly assembled good running engine.  Swapping heads is one thing but pistons is a whole different ball game to me.

depending on the cam and heads, I would think 500 would be the low side. My 383, as built in Super Chevy last year, does 480hp/495ftlbs with a .490 lift flat tappet hydraulic cam and AFR 195cc heads. So if yours isn't pushing 500 minimum I would be upset :)

I know Dart makes good heads, but I have no experience with those iron eagles. My AFRs, completely assembled, cost $1440. Just a tad more than one of those 177 blowers last time I checked.

given your HP levels, hypereutectic pistons should be fine, but forged will give you more piece of mind with the blower.

6-8 lbs is about right for those little blowers.

If you want to make power with a 400 -406 cu.in. WITHOUT the blower.
Use a alloy cylinder head with a 215cc intake port.a good hydraulic roller cam 230-240 duration at 0.050 ,you'll have 475+HP with plenty of torque.

Without the blower, aim for close to 10-1 compression,RPM air gap intake,750 DP carb. with a 1-3/4 headers.

Imagine what you could do with the blower. ;D

The heads are key for great HP and big block torque with a 406.
