Hood hinges with struts

I'm going to replace the hinges on my 1980. Was looking at a variety of hinges, saw these really expensive hinges. Experience with these? Worth the money?

They cost a pretty penny but are cheaper than a third hood.  But others are much less.

I think his point is you can buy replacement hinges but they don't last long before they either bend your hood in half if you are careless or start popping up in the back in no time. The aftermarket ones are better about the springing, but what happens when the strut fails, or that hood comes crashing down on your skull. No one has yet to solve the 73-80 hood dilemmas, unfortunately. It's on my bucket list

I see. The '80 I'm finishing up came with a pancaked hood.

Can't believe I found a correct one at the wrecking yard!

Since I dealt with hing issues early on ('69 Caprice ) I have always shot lube in all the joints.

Lube and paying attention when you close the hood makes all the difference!

Yeah, hood #1 came with the truck already popped. Maybe that one doesn't count...

Hood #2 was at the painter, nearly done, installed for dry fit before painting blue and the helper didn't pay close enough attention closing and popped that one.

Hood #3 is supposedly a much stronger hood, but even with good lube, those hinges are wonky and it's at risk.

Villezombonie, thanks for the link to cvf! That's my front end dress up kit from them. Awesome materials and customer service. I do wonder about replacing the struts every ten years. Their cost is quite a bit better than some of the others, I'll look into it further.

I bought a cowl hood from a fellow SB lover, never been used.

Came with those straps to keep the hood from popping. Probably frowned upon/voted against by some, as these hoods are supposed to pancake instead of coming through the windshield.

I haven't installed it yet, open to thoughts on viability.

$200.00  ;D

Go ahead and install the straps - they are cheap insurance against a stranger closing your hood improperly.

And if you are concerned about the hood coming through the window, take a moment to measure the width of the window opening versus the width of the hood and you'll realize how improbable that situation is. GM clearly designed the hood to fold, but the decapitation theory doesn't make sense to me. It would mean the GM boys designed a non-decapitation hood for an imaginary event yet saw no hazard with installing side-saddle fuel tanks.

A real engineering reason existed for the folding hood, we just don't know what it was.

The stops at the cowl and the failure point were definitely designed for safety. The saddle tank debacle was a scam "FAKE NEWS". Unfortunately, the folding point in the hood was just lost the arm-wrestling match with the crappy hood hinge design all too often.

Cvf hinges installed today, it's like buttering toast.

Issue getting things lined up. Had to cut the hood gasket, tried realigning fender. Need to grind a bit off the aftermarket fender.

Old hinges were scary. These are sweet!

Good to hear that it's working!  How many times have we bought something that was high dollar, only to be disappointed?

Thanks guys! Okay, here's pictures. The hood stays up well. When you get it around thirty degrees, glides by itself down, only takes two fingers to stop or raise up from there. Still very happy with them.

Added arrows where had to cut the gaskets. The back of the hinges compressed on them.

Side to side alignment looks good, as good as it will be.  These agreements fenders were so bad, when painting, they had to put straps on them to bend them inward to get the gap acceptable. With paint, we're not touching that.

Yet again, I'm wishing I'd fixed the original fenders. Previous owner had cut the corners of to fit big tires and covered it with those guards. The passenger side hood sits high. We can adjust it lower, but hit these leftover metal lip. They're coming back after Thanksgiving with a grinder to shave them off and try again. I'll be surprised if it gets it perfect, but we'll be close.

There were two bushings on drivers side raising the fender but none on passenger. Raising fender and door helped a lot since the back of the hinge would sit on the cab. But not quite there.
