Key notes
"X" pipes are better for peak HP above 2500 rpms and might lower your 0-60 time
"H" pipes are better for towing and driving around town.

when ever possible place the pipe closest to the engine as possible

There are minor differences in power at different RPM levels, but its probably not enough that most folks would notice.

In most cases, the exhaust note "pitch" with an H-pipe is lower and has a rumble, while an X-pipe is higher pitch and more raspy.  I think the H-pipe sound is closer to a classic muscle car sound, while an X-pipe is more like a newer high rpm, small displacement engine (tuned Mustang or Camaro).

The other consideration is that an X-pipe is hard to fit on a 4x4 unless you want to lose clearance.  There just isn't a very good place to fit one around the long transmission/transfer case and driveshaft.

I get "Motor Trend On Demand" and my favorite show is "Engine Masters". Episode 22 goes into all this with dyno tests, either is better than straight pipes but there was only 1.3 horsepower difference between an X vs. H and it lost .3 foot pounds of torque at peak. Their opinion was the X sounded cooler but the H was easier to make. Both provided about 5 horsepower more than straight pipes below 5K rpm.
