Adding intermittent wipers to a truck without them
« on: November 04, 2008, 08:41:16 AM »
Occasionally I see an intermittent wiper dash module for sale on eBay.  This is a nice-to-have feature I wouldn't mind having in my truck.  To replace the standard 2-speed wipers my truck currently has, is swapping the dash module enough, or does this feature also require a special wiper motor and/or wiring?

IIRC, on trucks with the wiper switch on the dash, it is pretty much plug & play. The harness unplugs and the delay module plugs in between.

On my 79 I swapped to a later column with the wiper switch on the column and it was a little more complicated.

An aftermarket system comes with everything you need.

Yep, here's anew one I bought, but this is all you need.  It's two pieces; switch and module.

78 Chevyrado,

     Where'd you get a new switch and module?  Are both units combined into a single part number?  Is it a genuine GM part?

I bought mine new from classic parts of america.  The switch and module are sold seperately.  They are Genuine GM Parts (both of them) in ACDelco boxes.  Classic parts doesn't say that it's GM but it is.  The module is kind of expensive, if you're on a budget find that part on ebay.  This setup fits 78-83 models.

Here's the switch:  GM PN# 14028808
http://www.classicparts.com/1978-83-Windshield-Wiper-Switch/productinfo/67-656B/

Here's the module:  GM PN# 88960364
http://www.classicparts.com/1978-83-Windshield-Wiper-Delay-Control-Module/productinfo/67-682/

I have since found them on gmpartsdirect.com for $5-$10 or so cheaper, each.  You might do a part number search to find a better deal, I just didn't have the part numbers until I bought them.

 I have that same switch from a monte I think, but it don't have the module. I understand that just the switch and a delay wiper motor should work. and the switch/module and a regular wiper motor should work together.
 Right??

I've got the same switch & module that 78 Chevyrado showed in his photo (http://tinyurl.com/kwacr4).  If it's important, the switch is part #14028808 and the module is part #14056657.

The switch & module were removed from an '85 by someone else by cutting the wires, so my question relates to wiring.

The pigtail that plugs into the module has 6 wires, labeled A through F, as follows:

A = GRA
B = BLK/LT BLU
C = GRA
D = PL
E = BLK
F = PNK

If it matters, "A" looks slightly darker than "C" (not the exact same color gray).

All I have found is a detail of the "pulse wiper system:"

However, it doesn't tell me where the wires go, AND it only shows B through F (no second gray in the A spot).

Can anyone help as to where connect my 6 wires (A through F)?  Many thanks.

This forum truly is excellent.

Question about the module though.
The link above is no longer good, can anyone recommend a good module?
I see a few online for $80, but it seems a bit steep, no?

The delay modules, switches and wiper motors have several different variations. Need more info on what setup you have.

Thanks Vile. Sorry I missed your response until just now. (I had forgotten to turn on the notify button.)

I'm replacing my whole wiper system right now, so the setup is interchangeable.

1. I'm looking for a new wiper motor and am having difficultly finding one in general. Any ideas?

2. Once I get the wiper motor operable, I'd like to patch in a delay to a new aftermarket switch and have intermittent wipers.

At this moment, I've stripped everything from the truck- Wiper motor, washer pump, wipers and linkage. After 48 years, you can imagine it's beat up.
I've opened the wipermotor- the gear seems fine, the rotor rotates and such. But again, it's just beyond it's shelf life at this point.

My guess is that what VileZombie was requesting was details about your specific vehicle. Year, model, customizations, etc. Every little bit helps.
